In this video, I will demonstrate: how to set up a choral count by 1/4 chart, things to notice, questions to ask students, and how to annotate students' thinking.

Choral counting by fractions is an excellent warm-up to include in your fraction unit. Students can analyze the numbers, look for patterns, identify whole numbers, mixed numbers, equivalent fractions and engage in thoughtful mathematical conversations.

Students often have to be nudged from drawing circles(direct modeling) to identifying groups of ten in a number, recording equations, and decomposing. I realize I did not verify the student had all his plus symbols (I will do better next time).

Students in third grade and up can use counting collections to increase their number sense, counting efficiency and accuracy, and make connections to multiplication equations.

When students begin counting large collections some may need help understanding why it is easier to count collections when they are in equal groups. This conversation prepares this student to understand the reason for equal groups.

Balancing equations can be challenging for students young and old. However, when students are given a concrete tool to help them make sense of what balancing an equation means they can be much more successful and make sense of the mathematics involved.

Carrying the one limits students' mathematical understanding. Try an alternative subtraction strategy that teaches students to be flexible problem solvers, think about mathematical relationships, and deepens their number sense.

Using the standard algorithm aka "carrying the one" can get in the way of your child's mathematical skills and growth. Yes, you might get the answer quickly, but there are other drawbacks. Watch and learn the benefits of not using the standard algorithm with young children.

Counting up can be a helpful strategy for young students who are having a hard time with the concept of subtraction. Thinking about counting up to find the answer can be the strategy that some kids need to help them solve.

One way to increase transfer and ensure that students understand a concept, is to have them teach it to someone else. Students can learn to use questions to prompt understanding in their peers. This also frees up time for the teacher to confer with others.
