This was a fantastic free lecture on Schubert’s song “Erlkönig” by Dr. Jon Jeffrey Grier. Halloween was past, but it was not too late to take in a good 19th-century ghost story! Franz Schubert’s song Erlkönig, composed in 1815 on a poem by Johann von Göthe, is a tour-de-force of compositional inventiveness. The evil Erlkönig - i.e., King of the Elves - lurks in the woods and stalks children who...

More accurately. It is an effort by serious harpsichord makers to endow the instrument with the ability to create the dynamics necessary for the type of music which was coming into fashion at the time. Forte pianos were just gaining a foothold in their development and suitability as capable instruments. Naturally a harpsichord building firm would stick to what they knew best by developing this instrument with features that enable dynamics. Your blind cynicism is a major source of your ignorance.

Thanks for the education. If possible, could you tell me what type of harpsichord Domenico Scarlatti composed on? Honestly, I have been trying to get a definitive answer to this ? for a couple years now, always getting conflicting responses. I can't think of anyone better than you to ask. If you could find the time to respond it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Robert! We checked in with our curatorial team and wanted to share some thoughts: His life from 1685 to 1757 was spent in Rome, Lisbon, and Madrid, and it was in Madrid where most of his 555 keyboard sonatas were written. He was a musician of rank in the Court as a music master to Princess Maria Barbara, who had married into the Spanish royal house. The Princess later became Queen of Spain. Scarlatti remained in the country for the remaining twenty-five years of his life and had five children there. He would have had access to any number of different harpsichords from Ruckers to the Italian tradition, and the Iberian Peninsula. He certainly never saw a Taskin, and it is unlikely he ever saw an English harpsichord of any make, though sometimes German harpsichords traveled. He MAY have seen a Cristofori or Ferrini piano, and he may have had access to one later in his writing career, but no documentation exists that fully supports this. Play Scarlatti on the harpsichord that you feel makes that a given work sounds best, and his spirit will smile on you forever. You will not be in any error if the effect is both musical and compelling!

I too felt the description drawn out and wanted to hear it being played, even out of tune. That's accademics for you!! He needs a cameraman and some editing also. That said, the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford has or had a similar harpsichord in the Hill Collection. I saw it undergoing repair in the workshop of Robert Goble, Headington, Oxford. Some years later, visiting the Ashmolean, a man just walked into the Hill gallery and played said instrument for about half an hour, then walked out again. So I was treated to the machine stop/ venetian swell and the other timbres. Quite lovely.
