    You can also use a 12v incandescent (not led) auto tail light or auto accessory light as spark discharge (something with an 1157, 1156, or 1003 bulb). Just add a couple lengths of wire and a couple alligator clips. I added a 3 ohm 5w power resistor on the light ground wire to add more load because I thought it was a little too bright under 14.6v.

    How much current does the inverter draw from the battery if you have no AC load connected to the output? Years ago, when setting up UPS systems for computers they would specify how long they would run a particular sized load but also how long they would run with no load. It basically worked out that the inverter was consuming about 25% of the power stored in the battery.

    • @proficientprepper
      @proficientprepper 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Every inverter is different. But what you are asking about is called idle consumption. Some manufacturers will actually list this value in their inverter specifications. Just going off memory, the inverter I used in the video is around 25 - 30 watts idle consumption. I have a much larger inverter that is around 70 watts idle consumption. So given just one 100ah 1280wh battery, this will drain the battery in roughly 50 hours. That is why it is important to size your system accordingly to include enough solar panels to make up for this.

      @@proficientprepper Thanks for the info and explanation. I'm primarily looking for back up for when the grid goes down. I think for back up for my sump pump, I'm going to go with a 12 VDC pump and a battery dedicated for that. That way when the pump isn't running, it will use zero battery power. For times when I have minimal power usage I could use a battery and inverter. I also have a generator for times when I need more power. My thought is to recharge the batteries when I'm running the generator anyway of a larger load. This is like the idea behind a hybrid car to reduce fuel consumption.

    • @proficientprepper
      @proficientprepper 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That totally depends on what you will be powering. You would have to of course connect the batteries according to the connection guide in the owners manual. Typically 4s4p. But to give you an example using a refrigerator. My 25 cubic foot refrigerator was powered by this battery for 18 hours when it was relatively cool in my garage. So in theory, 8 of them could power that refrigerator for 144 hours without any solar charging.

    I was frustrated with a company (Inergytek- Kodiak/Apex) that was SLOW to deliver. I had survived 11 days without sufficient power after a hurricane. I built my own "power cart." On an 800lb, gorilla cart I put 4x 6v 260Ah AGM batteries, 6.2Kw capacity (2016 lithium price was prohibitively expensive). A 2000watt Renogy inverter/charger, a 40amp Epever solar controller. All properly fused and wired. The PV input is through 2 strings of 4 x 100watt panels for 800watts.(Renogy flexible and Harbor Freight) After FINALLY getting the components from Inergytek, (an Apex with two expansion Flex batteries. 3x1096 watt hours capacity) I can splint the PV between the two.

    About to buy new batteries for my thunderbolt kit. Getting the universal battery 100 amp hour from Walmart seems to be the best deal. The controller has a Setting for lithium batteries but I can find no information on it and the manufacturers are less than helpful in their manual and over the phone. I'd like to switch to lithium and to the larger panels but they push 110 or 120 V and I'm running a 12 V system and unsure of how to run a 120 V panel into a 12 V system or where to get a 110 or 120 V battery or power station affordably. If anyone has any advice on this I'd much appreciate it.

    • @proficientprepper
      @proficientprepper 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'm not clear on what you have there. The solar charge controller determines the solar panel input. It sounds like you have a 12v system so the solar charge controller will output 12v to the battery. You will need to determine the input specifications of your solar charge controller to determine which panels to purchase.

    16:02 - Cut and remove 2mm less insulation than you need to remove. Then cut a 2mm slice of the rest of the insulation, and pull that slice to the end of the cable. Then that slice will hold the strands together while you slide on the connector. Remove that slice of the insulation before you crimp etc.

    Would this inverter have the same impact as shown, with using a car or small truck 12v battery. With it installed in the car or small truck?

    • @proficientprepper
      @proficientprepper 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You could definitely hook this up to a 12v battery in a truck. But you would need to figure out how much of the 3000 watts you can use depending on how much power your battery has. Batteries in vehicles are designed for huge rushes of current to start a vehicle. But I'm not sure how much sustained draw they can take. I've not had much experience with using lead acid/AGM batteries with inverters.

    U keep saying charge, are't we discharging with the resistor?

    • @proficientprepper
      @proficientprepper 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      In this case, the capacitors are not charged and they absorb current very quickly. That is what creates the spark. I use the resistor to slow the current way down so there is no spark. However, I have done what you mentioned before. I have wanted to work on a system like this and I have discharged the capacitors so there is no more charge left in them. But I typically disconnect the battery and use a 12v light on the inverter DC side to do that instead of a resistor. The light be on for a few seconds until the power is drained. You could also just wait and eventually the capacitors will drain all by themselves.

    I use a test light to charge the capacitors.

    Always connect power first, THEN ground.

    I'm just a beginner here, and I ask: WHY not put the batteries IN SERIES and then use a 24V->115V Inverter? Avoids wiring overheating problems?

      I did switch to a 24v system and I did do a video on that. But I did purchase 24v batteries instead of putting the 12v batteries in series.

      This one is not hooked to the grid. The AC output goes over to my transfer switch, where I can pick an choose what I power in my house with this system. I did a video on that th-cam.com/video/3Mj57MB8AWo/w-d-xo.html If you want to see a video where I did hook it to the grid. But thar system does not feed back into the grid, but it does use grid input to charge the battery th-cam.com/video/y2Ezj6nQNZ0/w-d-xo.html
