HALF Italian | A Brother and Sister’s Journey of Reconnecting to their Italian Heritage. Born on each other’s half birthday - (Leo and Aquarius are polar opposites of each other) and half Italian by heritage - (full Italian mother). Our Italian heritage is half from the North of Italy and half from the South. This is our story of exploring our heritage and our journey towards dual citizenship. For the first half of our life - we took our Italian heritage for granted. Though we thoroughly enjoyed our mom's wonderful food, and thought her maiden name was funny, it wasn't until we were older that we began to connect with what it meant to be half Italian by blood. Are you half Italian? Join us!

Good luck 1948 cases are being thrown out left and right. Italy had a major ruling against it recently and honestly are looking to revamp their laws so this system isn’t as accessible as it’s been to distant relatives.
Yes. We are keeping tabs on this as well. So far, we don't see the recent ruling affecting our case - but there are no guarantees!
Super exciting. I am in the same exact boat going through my GGF with CONE and trying for over a year to get an appointment. I decided to go through an Italian lawyer to submit my case and it should be sent to the court in the next few weeks. Collecting the documents wasn't too bad or long and no 1948 or minor issues but the appointment lottery is just insane. Looking to move to the EU in 26 and the timeline even after case is submitted will be close so trying to stay patient. I wish you both the best of luck and smooth process.
Yes, there is so much patience involved! It feels like an honor that this is even possible for us, which helps with the waiting. May your process go smoothly as well. Thanks for following our journey!
Thank you for your inspiring video. We will also be travelling from Canada to Italy for the 1st time in June to discover my husband’s relatives and the village where they lived. Apparently, 11 generations are from the 1 little village in Rimini. We hope to make great connections and maybe purchase a part-time home either in the village or around it in our future!
May your journey be a wonderful one! There is nothing like stepping foot on Italian soil and walking the streets which your family once walked. Sending our best to you for a beautiful, connective time there. Thank you for following along with our journey!
Appointments are impossible in Philadelphia. Finally hired a lawyer to do exactly what you are doing.
Yes, unfortunately the consulate system doesn't seem to be working. Now that we know all that is involved with the legal documents and such, we are grateful to have professionals helping us to be prepared.
Best of luck to you!
Your Duolingo name please?
Great grandfather? I got my citizenship because my father was an Italian. Sorry, I think a great grandfather is too far removed.
Our mother is full Italian by blood.
@@halfitalian24 unless they have changed the way test for citizenship, the test when I applied was that a parent was not naturalised at the time of your birth. My father was an Italian, having never taken citizenship in Australia. This seems like a fair test to me because my father wanted to remain an Italian and not relinquish his birthright. My mother was German “by blood” because my grandfather was German. It doesn’t mean I can get German citizenship.
Change TH-cam Channel name! Name it "Full Italian"!!! Very nice shots, this channel will grow a lot. Ben fatto!!! Bravi!!!
Beautiful job 👍 real Italian pasta
Can I ask- did you need just one copy of each document for everyone applying or do you need an individual copy for each person applying?
Yes, we only needed to submit one copy of each document for our case.
Good luck! I've been at it for about 2.5 years now with the help of an Italian law firm. Collected all of the documents I needed, and everything was filed with an Italian court earlier this year. The judge was assigned and the hearing date has been set for mid-January. Mine is a 1948 case since my Italian grandfather naturalized before my father was born. Dealing with discrepancies in the documents is a hassle, but they are usually not serious impediments. I wish you all the best and, hopefully, we will all become dual citizens in 2025! P.S. Whenever I received an original vital record and had to mail it off, my fear was always that it would get lost in transit. It took about 12 months for me to receive my grandparents' complete naturalization records from USCIS. That seems like an extremely long time to wait for a vital record from a federal agency, but what can you do? I would have cried if those had gotten lost in the mail. You have to be very patient. The process is slow and takes time, but the reward is worth it. Buona fortuna!
Yes, gathering all of the documents felt daunting, and sending them off in the mail was a nail-biter! May your case go smoothly. Thanks for following along with our journey!
I downloaded Duolingo on my vacation while in Greece. I am fluent in Greek, my cultural language. I spoke Italian when I was a child. My babysitter was Italian. At age 7 we moved to another country and all was lost. Now I want to learn it because I love the harmonious love of the language sound and to stimulate my brain! It’s all cool and exciting!
What a gift that you were given exposure to so many languages while you were young! Although it's harder to learn as we age, it's still worth it. We agree that Italian is beautiful to listen to - la Bella lingua!
anyway you don't look like Americans, but real Italians. It also shows in the way you dress. I hope that one day you will also visit southern Italy, which is bellissimo!
Thank you for the compliment! While in Italy we try to match the beautiful people who are always presenting 'la Bella figura'! ;) I have visited Sicily, but soon I hope to bring Luke along and also to visit Calabria. Our Southern Italian grandparents were born there. Thank you for following our story! - Sarah
a wonderful story ❤
Thank you for following along for our journey!
When I wanted to get my German citizenship, I hired a german lawyer and took care of it all. It was so much easier and very quick.
Yes, although I didn't think we would need it at first - I am grateful we found a company we trust.
Awesome! Gotta try this. By the way, what is your heritage on your father's side? (the other half 🙂 as it were).
Our father's family comes from England, Sweden and Scotland. ;)
Can you share in detail which documents you needed to acquire? I am eligible through my great grandfather, grandfather and father. Do I just need their documents or do I need their spouse’s information too. Grazie mille per questo video è molto utile! Buona fortuna a voi!
We gathered birth, marriage and death certificates for all the ancestors in our line, and then birth and marriage for those of us and parents still living. One of the most important documents is the CONE certificate for your Italian-born relative, proving that they did not naturalize. Every person's case is unique. We did not have any divorces which made things simpler. We recommend investing in a lawyer who knows this process and who will look over your specific documents before you apply. It's a long, slow process and it would be so frustrating to get your documents presented in court and have some discrepancies. All the best on your journey! Grazie for your comment and for following along with ours!
@@halfitalian24 Grazie mille 🙏
How r you , I can see you have all the documents, you guys won’t have any problems at all,I did this journey too, court of Genova,my case was presented in November 2023 got approved in may 2024,passport November 2024. BUONA FORTUNA !!
How wonderful, congratulations!!
I’m so glad you are sharing this information! So you didn’t need any docs from the non-Italian spouses (Your grandfather, father, etc)?
I'm glad that this information is helpful! We did gather birth, marriage and death (where applicable) certificates for everyone - spouses included, but the company we are working with only ended up asking us to send the docs which pertain to our direct line - Luke and I (and children) - mother - grandmother - great-grandfather and great-grandmother. We always recommend you have your own case reviewed since each family has unique circumstances!
Mans only spent 1500 minuets on duo for italian here i am 400 minutes in on day 3 or 4 of my free trial
Interesting. I might try it
Congratulations! Can you share about your process of choosing a lawyer? In the process right now.
We did not anticipate hiring a lawyer, but once we realized how impossible it was to get a consulate appointment (we would have needed appointments in Chicago and Houston based on where we live), we began to consider more help. Luke found Smart Move Italy online and we were excited about the opportunity it opened up for us. I had considered moving there, but all of my children would have also needed to establish residency and then apply in person - which wasn't realistic. We've been happy with them so far!
Sending good vibes ! Started my journey March 1 st 2020 . 2 adult daughters and my minor son and myself recognized in July . Through the Los Angeles consulate , passport appointment in October! Never ever stop pushing forward on your journey ! Buona Fortuna …..
Exciting!
That is very exciting! Congratz! I have been in the document collection phase these past few months myself. Still, I can already see it will be next to impossible to ever get an appointment at the PA consulate booked as there are never any appointments available. So, I will likely have to go through the lawyer route as well. Trying to plan ahead here, what have your legal fees approx been up to this point? Also, I noticed you had a birth certificate for the grandma in Italy. The written instructions I looked at from the PA consulate seemed to only require a birth certificate from the grandfather since we were going down that line. Only needed the marriage certificate. Maybe I am mistaken though?
I’m also in the Philadelphia consulate region and yeah, I think Philadelphia only cares about in-line documents. I’m going to still include my Great Grandmother’s birth certificate though just in case since I already acquired it. I’ve collected all my documents and have been trying for months now to get an appointment. Philadelphia apparently only releases 2 each week on Monday. So it’s basically the lottery. 😅😭
@@josh.johnsonWow only 2 slots a week? I might have a better chance at winning the lottery then getting one of those! I'd love to know from anyone who's gone the legal route roughly how much it costs overall.
@@MrCrazz23 yeah, I’m really curious how this goes for the Half Italian siblings! I’ve read pros and cons for this but never saw more details so really following these videos!
Reading the Philly details about an appointment and they literally admit it’s nearly impossible saying: “Perseverance is the only key to obtaining an appointment.” 😂🤣😭😤
Ottimo lavoro, finalmente siete arrivati al traguardo 👍

Thanks for following along on our journey!
I’m wanting to do the same for Portuguese citizenship as I have been unable to locate my great grandmother’s birth certificate. I believe she snuck in but her husband came from Cape Verde which was a Portuguese territory back then. I’ve lived & worked in Italy 🇮🇹 and want to go back using the Portuguese citizenship if possible. There are so many benefits to tracing your heritage.
It is a fascinating journey, no matter the outcome. I can't count the amount of hours I spent getting lost in historical documents on Ancestry.com. It has always felt like a mystery to solve, looking for clues and doing my best to put the pieces of our family story together. I hope you continue to find the documents you need and enjoy the process! Thanks for following our story! Best, Sarah

La Bella Lingua! Italian is the most beautiful language in our opinion as well!
Is there a website, book, or document that lists and describes all the steps in detail?
Not that we have found, however there are many companies who can assist you in finding out whether or not you may qualify for dual citizenship. Myitalianfamily.com will offer you a free evaluation. Hopefully the subsequent videos we have shared will also help! Best of luck!
Ducklang is fire for learning Italian! It’s super easy to use and gets you learning words fast. No extra fluff, just straight-up vocab that sticks. My Italian vocab is getting way better, and I’m hyped about it.
Thanks for the tip! Will check it out!
So I have a question, where are you sending it? The apostle part was done? Did they rewritten what you sent? Just asking because I'm ordering two of each, one for me, one for "them ". Is that adequate?
We are working with a company called Smart Move Italy. We are sending our documents to their office. The attorneys there will review our documents and then send them to Italy. We obtained our apostilles ourselves. You can learn more about how to do that in our Apostille video.
This is the first full explanation of the apostille process. Thank you so much! This is incredibly helpful!
We are so glad this was helpful to you! It can feel very intimidating when you are trying to navigate it for the first time. Ciao!
This is great! I’ve literally been thinking today about making a video to share how to do this and thankfully you’ve saved me some time! I had 16 documents needing an Apostille in Ohio and 3 more in North Carolina. Figuring out the process was really a pain and felt scary since I was sending these documents I had spent a year gathering. I almost booked a trip to Columbus to hand them in directly! Another tip is bulk sending. At least for Ohio I’ve sent them in bulk with 1 cover letter and a check from however many. So for example I sent off 5 this week with one cover letter and a check for $25 (Ohio only charges $5 per Apostille). Saves a lot of time to get multiple documents authenticated by the Secretary of State.
I completely agree about this task feeling scary and overwhelming! I too was TOTALLY nervous to send away all my documents which I’d spent so long gathering. 😬 Official government forms are intimidating, and it can feel confusing -especially when you don’t want to make a mistake that could cost extra time. This process already takes such a long time! I hope your journey continues to move along well. Thanks for following! Ciao!👋
We are following your journey as we are on a similar path. We have almost all our vital records except 1 which we can not find and will need to probably hire a professional to help us find it. Also, we applied for the CONE in February and are still waiting for it. Unfortunately it can take well over a year to receive it back. Love your videos & tips!
We are so glad to hear that these videos are helpful! It's an exciting journey for sure!
My mother was going to go for a No Appointment case with the help of Smart Move Italy after the Philadelphia Consulate cancelled her 2021 appointment due to COVID (she booked it in 2019!). Miraculously, she got an email in March 2023 from the Consulate after we just started getting the ball rolling with SMI saying that they've reinstated her appointment for April 20 2023. All of her documents were already in Italy with the Italian lawyer SMI was partnered with but Terry (the SMI citizenship senior researcher) wasted no time in retrieving the documents and having them DHL'd back to us in time. The Consulate fast-tracked her application and within 48 hours of her presenting all her documents she was a confirmed Italian citizen. A little over a year later, I'm now piggybacking off of her as Philadelphia has a "first-generation" citizenship by descent option which is only available to the children of a recognized Italian citizen registered in AIRE. Had my appointment in June and waiting patiently for a response. To say this has been a wild ride would be a gross understatement! Definitely recommend Smart Move Italy though based on the interaction we had with them! Best of luck!!
Thank you for sharing your story and your mom's experience with Smart Move Italy. It's a great feeling knowing that we are in good hands! We appreciate your encouragement as we keep going. Ciao!
This is actually a scripted advertisement for that service mentioned at 3:00. Be aware.
It’s not… we’re just keeping people informed along our way of the different people/companies we’ve reached out to.
What makes you say that it is scripted? It seems pretty legit to me?
It took me 3 months to get my appointment in Miami, but it's nearly 3 years out...
Yes, the wait through the consulates are intense! I hope all moves ahead without any trouble! Best of luck! - In Bocca al Lupo!
I'm full Italian on both sides, and I applied in Italy in 2017 when I moved to Italy. I had wanted it for ages but it was hard to do until I finally just decided to do it, I only had 6 documents as it was my 4 grandparents who were Italian.I went through my Italian maternal grandfather. I moved to Italy and I have worked there since I moved and It's been hard but worth it.I had a cone as well but it only took 30 days to come back in 2017. In bocca al lupo ragazzi!
Thanks Deanna! Appreciate you telling a little about your story. So awesome that you’ve been living there. What part?
@@halfitalian24 Hi there! Yes, it's been one heck of a ride! I first lived in my grandma's town in Avellino ( it's not far from Naples). I got 'stuck' in Italy during lockdown in that small town, it was awful. Once the pandemic was over I moved to LA BELLA NAPOLI! ( Naples) and I love it. I still go back to the little town for the annual chestnut festival and I get to see old students. I taught English there. I learned Italian fluently by living there and studying. I learned so much from my students too! I am now living 9 months in Naples and 3 months in New York. My parents are getting older and my daughter has 2 kids, and a third oneon the wayl. It's perfect because as a teacher I am off for the summer and I can come back to NY to spend time with my family. I have second cousins in Italy but my immediate family is all in New York City, I am from Staten Island.
I'm sorry but no. You're not half Italian. This is typical American thinking that genuinely only exists over there. You're American. If you go to Italy, nobody would consider you Italian because you aren't. Why are you Americans so obsessed about living in the "greatest country in the world" but at the same time you ust HAVE to be from ANYWHERE but America. You don't have some kind of "Italian blood" (this is ridiculous). You have never lived in the culture, you didn't grow up in the culture, you didn't speak the language. Wow, you ate your mom's food and have a last name that is Italian. If I thought like you did, I would be part French and Dutch too but no, I am not. I may have had ancestors from there but I am Swedish. Saying something else would be ridiculous. I am not saying this to shame you, you can absolutely learn Italian and want to know more about WHERE YOUR FAMILY came from but! Calling yourself Italian is just incorrect. If the country you supposedly say you come from does not consider you one of them, I think that's a pretty clear sign you should re-evaluate how you look at yourself. And you know what? While America has a fuckton of flaws and while I do love shitting on it, there is nothing wrong with being American. You don't decide where you're born. It doesn't mean anything, really.
I’m also proud to be half Italian 🙏
Awesome! We’re glad you’re here!
I found your channel while searching for service providers to help me apply for dual citizenship via a court case. This video gave me chills! So amazing. My family I’m applying through is from a similar region (minucciano).

Buongiorno like Brad Pitt in Inglourious basterds.
Bella storia, bravi! Continuate a studiare l'italiano, così le prossime volte potrete fare video dove parlate (in parte) anche in italiano! Ciao ciao! 😀😀😀😀😀😀
Grazie, e buona idea!
Wonderful story! All the videos of when you go back to Italia to visit your long distance relatives are really moving! My wife (from Genova) asks for more videos about food and your recepies! (It was fun to see you cook and even in Italy when you make gnocchi and gnocco fritto with salumi) Ciao ciao! Brava e bravo!
We are so grateful that you are following our story! Grazie!
Are you going to Italian court because you’ve been waiting two years and still can’t get a consulate appointment?
Yes. Because we can not get an appointment, they are taking our case before a court in Italy.
Intasate i già intasati tribunali italiani. That is becoming a BIG problem here because, you know, there aren’t only the Americans but also all the South Americans doing it. Are you learning the language?
@@nicolettastrada5976 she shows in another video that she’s learning the language and reconnecting with her heritage. By the way, it’s much harder for Americans to do it because the U.S. prohibited dual citizenship until 1993, whereas Argentina, Uruguay or Brazil didn’t care if you had dual loyalties when immigrating. I met so many Argentinians and Brazilians in Austria while studying there and they all had Italian citizenship! I imagine the numbers of Latin Americans trying to make it to Europe through this route is sky high. And a lot of them don’t even settle in Italy-most just go to Germany or elsewhere in the EU.
