I’m Calder, I help people understand their voice, so they can use it, better. This channel is for singers who know there is something they can do differently with their voice. Vocal coaching to fix strain and tension issues in singing technique. Understand your instrument. Use it, better.
You may have already heard a lot of singing advice. How much have you taken in?
A lot of what happens when we sing, is in our minds. The vulnerability of daring to sing, the feeling of being exposed. The confidence to sing, regardless of the fear of singing. The expression of oneself and the giving of emotion. All of this is huge when singing, especially when others are listening.
But learning how to sing, is far away from the emotions of songs and delivery. It is in the physiology of your instrument. It is in the mechanics of the voice. It is in getting out of the way. It's using your instrument how it is intended, so you can rely on it night after night.
Stop listening and start feeling!

Singers - You Still Don’t Understand Your Voice

@@adesantoasman8585 Yes ! Exactly . Hope it helps
thanks for this video mate, I will share my little experience with this issue. My mother is the only one living with me, I go to college and when in home I'm always practicing, recording originals, and she's a sunshine my mom would never say anything against me, she loves me singing when I sound good and she encourages me, yet I can't get over that feeling of embarassment, not so because of her but because of the neighbours that are always wandering around their backyard (ofc they have the right to) but they are always looking and I can hear them commenting stuff sometimes, it's hard but I feel i'm navigating it with patience and re assuring myself. again thanks for the vid!
@@efim_061 ah brilliant ! Yeah it’s so easy to say ignore them , but very hard to actually do, it affects what headspace you are in no matter how much you try shit it out . Thanks for the comment enjoyed reading that , good luck
I don't like singing in front of anyone yet (I'm working on resolving that with a great teacher) but I especially dislike anyone hearing me working on a new song or on a song that's a little out of my reach which I am working towards. There's always someone at home so my car has became my primary practice place as I can go out for a 30 minute drive and sing my head off and nobody can hear me. I live in the middle of nowhere however, which helps. I even have some quiet, isolated spots where I can park up and play my guitar and sing for a bit in the back seat. I don't mind doing water phonation at home to songs or scales as that can be done very quietly without anyone hearing me. And even if they do hear me, its just a vocal exercise anyway and i'm not trying to sing "properly" or convey a story or any emotion. Its the vocal equivalent of doing press-ups at home or something similar so I feel much less vulnerable about it.
I have a real problem with people describing any ability as 'natural talent'. The truth is these people discovered a passion for something and focussed all of their energy on it. Probably as small children where nothing was expected of them and they would draw, play, sing, whatever just for the love of doing it.
God it’s horrible and no one talks about it. For me it stems from when my parents or siblings would catch me singing into a hairbrush as a youngster. Criiiiinge! Later on when I used to perform, the gig would be worse because I had been too embarrassed to warm up beforehand infront of a couple of strangers in earshot….for a gig infront of a shitload more strangers?! How does that even work? How can your own mind be such a self-destructive bastard? 😧 I mean, vocal warm ups sound so fackin terribly unmusical whoever is doing them so I should probably get over it. But won’t .
I just had to grit my teeth and get on with it, despite my hubby being able to hear me, it’s so worthwhile. And yes, I have a family who has that toxic mindset, my sister is the worst (I don’t invite her to concerts).
Thank you so much for saying all this. I knew that a lot of people have this issue, of course, but it still feels so good to hear someone actually address it openly. I like your tip of practicing small or short exercises throughout the day rather than making an hour-block of time because, so often, I don't have that hour-block of time. Thank you!
Great reminder of doing little bits when you can.
@@duncanmacgregor9398 I’m glad it’s reminded you Duncan! I can’t say it enough, just start doing it and doing it . It’ll become second nature.
Great discussion. It really helps to involve the family somehow. We joined a community christmas musical production this year and ever since it's become somewhat normal to sing around the house. I'm still the weird one, but I'm less timid about it. Having a successful performance to look back on is a big game changer for confidence too! Gotta overcome some of that stigma to get there though.
I needed to hear this. Thanks man!
No you didn't 😂
Thank you for the encouragement
A lot of people needed to hear this ha. I got alot of discouragement until I did my first gig and then people started to take me seriously. I’m thinking for a video idea you could maybe talk about resonance, and where you should be feeling your voice in certain parts of your range. Thanks as always
Great video, I too suffer from the disease. I have been practicing to and from work for 6+ years now. I also sing when nobody is home. Still I know I need to get over it. Thanks.

@@kennyholliday7492 Thanks. Yeah it’s definitely a tricky one. It’s not always supposed to sound ‘good’ , especially when you are tryin to fix certain voice issues or inconsistencies. There’s experimentation required. And weird stuff that isn’t singing. In fact , is it better to let people hear all that , so they know , you’re working on it !?
Thx kindly “C “ Yes the cracks & creaks vocalizing I think even my doggie ..runs for cover lol : Ps: you ever hear of the Red velvet covered mask thingy ? I think ? I heard of for loud vocalizing needing to contain volume !
@ hmmm . I don’t know about the red velvet bit! But mask and covering sure! Although covering is something I’ve heard people use , it’s not a phrase I use to explain anything .
Found it : Beltbox What say you ?
Funny enough, I love practicing at the grocery store or on the cardio machines at the gym. I make my volume just a tad lower than my regular speaking voice, and that FORCES me to use good technique to reach higher notes. I can’t use too much force or pressure, which means that I have to keep my voice light and focus on technique. Great practice. Also, I have no feelings of public embarrassment, so that’s a plus
Same😂
@@danielrybin2006 Yes ! I love this . Totally get where you’re coming from. I used to want everyone to hear me ! But yeah I’ve definitely practiced at super low volume like that, around people. All the time! Love this . I remember singing all my way home down the streets , late at night, when I first moved to this city. I think I wanted them all to open their windows and turn it into a street party. 😂 they didn’t . Not once 😆🤘 but yeah thanks for the comment, really fun hearing that. I’m with you
So difficult to sing
Apparently this is everything I was missing! Fuck my life, so many years!

Thanks for the video Calder :) How does lifting the soft palate differ from just lowering the larynx? Is it not the same thing?
@@sereetsithenatives5442 it’s all going to help shape the sound and can happen simultaneously, such as when yawning or using a bit of a yawn, they probably both occur. But lifting the soft palate is going to encourage the resonance into the head, into the nasal cavities and head, which is what we need for middle and higher registers . Focussing the sound where it wants to go, right where the soft palate is, will really help higher notes feel free and more easy. Try the “nng” sound. Closed , like a Humm but placed up near the roof of mouth different to an “mm” and go from lower to higher to try to feel how it resonates near the soft palate there as you get up to the bridge. It might help it make sense 😊
@@singingmatterscalder Wow! that was quick and very helpful! Thanks so much :) Would you say that solely focusing on lowering the larynx encourages a more chestier vocal and pulling chest?
@ Yeah you caught me at a good moment ! I do try to reply but also missed a few over Christmas. I would say focussing on lowering larynx is usually to avoid the larynx rising, initially. It’s to remove the tension and involvement of wrong muscles outside the larynx. Usually when people are having to lower the larynx it’s because of this tension that is strangling their voice. But once that is much more in control and at ease you can use a lower larynx as a tonal, stylistic choice also. But it depends where you’re at really. If everything g is still grabbing and tensing then that’s more important. If not. Experiment with a slightly lowered larynx, just a little and see if everything else functions the same but it just gives you a rounder and bigger sound that feels a tad more chesty yes
@@singingmatterscalder Thanks so much. This is very invaluable material. Thanks so much!! Let me work with raising the soft palette and see where it takes me. My larynx is relatively stable by now
@ excellent ! Let me know how it goes !
Magic
Solid advice. Another thing worth mentioning is that high notes require less air, so you don't need to force them by trying to force more air pressure into the note. Usually throws the pitch off or makes the it sound like a yell. If you ever find yourself in a contest to see who can hold out the longest note, sing a high note, you'll last longer.
Imho noone should try to "sound loud". It´s way better to imagine trying to reach someone across a busy street - let your body do the work, don´t focus on the effort. There are lots of mental tricks to stop yourself from working with strength, work with your intelligence and imagination!
His high notes sound terrible. I’ll look elsewhere.
Thank you, really first time hearing explained so clear and easy. Just need to implement it :-)
The more I compress mine the higher and louder it goes..I can sum this up in a few words by using simple relatable words but I won't get in the way of your hustle
@@wadebond7679 I get the feeling there are one or two people who find this advice opposing to their experience. My guess is they used to probably flip into a falsetto immediately when the resistance begins towards the bridge. And therefore this seems completely the opposite what helped them sing high. I’m definitely trying to reach people here who had similar issues to me of over powering themselves. Like way too much. Singers with immense tension and pressure. If that’s not you then maybe this kinda makes no sense and that’s why you had to think the opposite way of compressing and gaining cord closure instead. Most people go too big and hold onto chest way too high and don’t begin to blend low enough. But I understand this may seem strange advice if that isn’t you
@singingmatterscalder I'm going by two examples two students one teacher..Chris Cornell and Layne staley..who studied under Maestro kyle..Layne cups his tongue to the roof of his mouth beginner style but so does Celine Dion and many many other singers. I believe you can't listen to your own voice hence michael beinhorn gave Chris Cornell a recorder and a room as chris went off to work on recording black hole lyrics. Michael waited outside walked around while chris did his thing to reach chris goal. Note another story of Michael telling how as they recorded superunkown Chris was in what Michael thought was a silly mood of making chicken sounds little did michael know or understand it was chris' way vocal exercise..muscle memory, feeling it in his throat.its dauntinghaving to explain when you are running on limited time and money recording studios arent cheap, bottom line, can't really listen to the sound your own voice..unless it's a playback
Those who can do those who can't teach..Maestro Kyle believed teachers should be able to teach by example of actually being able to sing..those who can do and can also teach..as I've said relatable everyday words.
@@wadebond7679 Yeah I’ve never sung before I’m just making shit up. God knows what you’re on about .
@@singingmatterscalder wasn't referring to you sorry just going by what everyone says.and they say a lot.as in explain it away.Im on caffeine, two cups of coffee.
Thank you!
This helps me conceptualize it a lot! Such a simple lesson, but I think it will be very beneficial for me. Thank you! I've always been an okay singer without having any lessons, but I realized I could be so much better at singing if I just educated myself a little better on the topic. The thing is, I've always been embarrassed to sing well in front of people. I've always felt really weird about it, and so in school, I'd always sing with a masked silly voice, or I'd purposely sing badly. Which in retrospect seems a bit messed up, because I actually was blessed with talent, and I was too scared of people noticing me to use it. I want to sing well now. I know I can. I just need to actually practice and do vocal exercises. you seem like a cool guy, and I'm interested to learn more from you, so I subscribed. It seems like you actually play musical instruments (I see a guitar in there), but singers who can't play any instruments kind of annoy me. If they're half-decent at staying in key, they overinflate their egos, and act like they don't have to come to band practice, or help load equipment, or they think they're more important than every other member of the band.... I know these are just stereotypes, but they exist for a reason. I'm not saying all singers are like this. It's just a type that makes me grimace a bit.
So you how do you do it?... Do you think the high Note then what?
@ yeah, essentially, if there's a an instrument playing, I can use my voice as if it were an instrument to sing along. But very high notes have been difficult for me, without using falsetto, and It just makes so much intuitive sense that restraining your airflow makes it work better. I just have never sought to sing better until recently. I was doing punk rock before. Now I'm trying all kinds of stuff.
Hey Calder - love your advice. Over the years I have come to realise that the journey to higher note mastery is imo 80% self perception of our personal vocal system and 20% technique that requires repetitive experimentation to understand our individual anatomy. ❤ Wishing you a speedy recovery.
@@RichardRubendra1963 try not to think of it as individual anatomy. We all have the same antimony! We is all human! So switch that round. 80% technique . Don’t individualise it . ✌️
And my voice op was 3 years ago, I’ve got a rough ass cold. Cheers . And thanks for the comment
As a guitarist I found this really interesting and informative. Subscribed. If you could cover or point me in the direction of info to do with falsetto I’d be grateful. 👍
Thanks 🎉
Thank you for teaching this valuable lesson and sorry you had to go through this. I recognise this and this is definitely another wake up call for me. I can already tell from this video you have an amazing singing voice! Bless you!
Subbed 🎉
Um... your cords are audibly swollen. You probably shouldn't be singing in that upper range at all until the swelling subsides. I could explain the physiology behind why but you should know it already as a vocal coach. Particularly since you've 'had surgery'. You're also glossing over the formants and how air pressure and support affect them. And resonance and how it affects perceived "power". Basically I think you are doing a disservice to singers with this video in many ways. Thumbs down.
@@M2Texas yes my voice was in a horrid state and you can hear it. I’ve been unwell, as I mentioned, coughing and sneezing all week. . Why would you put ‘had surgery’ in inverted commas? Do you think I’m pretending ? I didn’t cover everything in this video obviously. I’m addressing the idea people think they need to give more and push more and go louder and go bigger for high notes, which is always coming up constantly. Usually when folks haven’t really learned to shed the weight of chest voice. Maybe some people are the opposite - they flip and go light and falsetto and may need a different approach to what I’m talking about but it makes a slot of sense for anyone who goes the other way and shouts into the high notes, which I always did. Yeah my voice is totally worn out. Agreed. Which I mentioned a couple of times. I was addressing this very common misconception.
This makes perfect sense. Im going to work on that.
Loved your video because it made sense. Like a light bulb moment 😅. Definitely going to check more of your videos out and I’ve subscribed. 2025 will be a great year. Thank you 🎉
@@TeresaWagstaff that’s fantastic . I’m so glad it made sense and thanks for subscribing! 😊
That’s the best single tip I have heard because I can instantly hear and feel the result! I’m a guitar player not sure if I can actually sing ! So thanks that really is great advice!
@@alanjanda696 excellent stuff ! I’m really pleased to hear this. And yes you can sing ! You just May have to learn how to. Good luck
Vowels, in pitch. Play.
As someone who has been a power singer in the past and can't do it anymore, this is the absolute best explanation of this whole concept and why I am not getting it right. Thank you!
All great points, no question, but as a gigging singer, you have to be careful here. Depends also on the sound you're going for. Some songs can be very demanding, requiring more energy and stamina. We are fooling ourselves if we don't remain cognisant of this. Listen to singers, doing truly live performances, not lip syncing, real live performances. The best ones make it appear easy, but it's not.
Depends what you mean by more energy. And also depends what people are doing when I say give less. I usually talking to people who think everything needs to big huge powerful. I talk to singers all day who misunderstand how high notes are achieved. There’s a massive misconception, usually with those who haven’t learned much yet. I was the same as this so it always comes from my experience. I often teach what I needed to learn before I ended up with an operation. It depends what you mean and who I’m pitching this at. I sang very hard for decade and a half . I still sing hard, even tonight I absolutely belted the shit out of my voice , but my god I couldn’t do it how I used to that’s for sure. Best wishes
@singingmatterscalder I hear you. Depends what you mean by singing "hard." When I say "more energy" it has all to do with what sound you're going for. For example, if I am performing an early Kansas song, before they became famous. The energy and intensity required is very challenging. Listen to the first two Kansas CDs. The vocals are off the chain.
Because there is a faster vibration the air is compressed more as a function of time like pushing a gas or fluid through a smaller opening from where it flows from and so less air is needed to get the same power. What becomes more important is the shaping, like you said getting everything out of the way is what's key.
Whats crazy.. is im taking vocal lessons from someone. And im having a hard time reaching some notes. And when i asked how do i go about hitting them.. she said to engage my core more and use more pressure. She has never once mentioned keeping my larynx down. But i see it mentioned all over youtube. I think it may be time for a new coach
@@RetroRedline I never like any comment that suggests more pressure! I mean, engage your core yes . Use support but we need to manage the pressure and try not to not allow pressure to excessively build up. There is always the chance things are misinterpreted and she didn’t quite mean that but after my experiences I would never say use more pressure, more cord closure perhaps …. So it’s not falsetto.., I’m trying to find angles that it was good advice . …. But i would never say it

I do agree that this is contoversial and almost an opposite ideas to sing lighter to sound stronger. And it is really not easy to understand. I like that this video not about technique, but more on the context that goes before excercise. I agree about kurt's voice ,i recently figured out his technique but it's not easy to keep it distorted all the time, funny most of his songs someone could be raspy enough for the parts he was raspy, but About A Girl I've been singing for 15 years and I've never been able to replicate a easy sound like he did , until recently watching Chris liepe , took a year of lessons with Chris and it's a placement thing with singing like Kurt. 😊 what I've come to figure out is ( and i might be wrong) Kurt used his head voice fry area allot, it's the only possible way to sing HEY.. WAIT...I GOT A NEW COMPLAINT.. OR WON'T YOU BELIEVE IT IS JUST MY LUCK, OR I NEED AN EASY FRIEND, But it's very relaxed, unplugged is my guide book or any of his demos from the box set, i go back and listen to the most raw form of vocal and that's what I'm finding. Also everything in your video is exactly what I'm working on now. Finding my fry and going from low to high as little air as possible , also trying to find Flagolet and whistle but I'm not quite there yet😊 i feel like I'm very close it's just a feeling i can't pinpoint yet
@@fenderfox5080 yeah it’s usually achieved with that kind of fry, it’s amazing what the voice can sound like even when using a lighter approach, that’s the whole thing, it’s almost a trick! It’s not. It’s completely not a trick. It delivers the emotion we hear so it’s real.
From what I understand Kurt blew his voice out multiple times recording the early Nirvana albums, he did not care about technique when recording just about getting the emotion out. Probably not the best vocalist to idolize. Doing it sustainability would definitely require a good combined fry + head voice, that is generally how to get the pitched scream sound.
@Captainj2001 yep, i didn't know how to sing in head voice fully like I do now, I always sang in chest and could never figure out how or why I couldn't do the sounds so these singers could do. Now that I'm learning head voice I'm getting closer to sustainable navigation 🤣
I trust what your saying bro🤘🏼 but im wandering how singers like Kurt Cobain for instance wasn't a fan of the norm technique and did his own thing? Would you say he was just a freak of nature?....or was he clued up with this kind of technique?
@@manifernandez6300 Jesus Christ ! If Kurt cobain had carried on that way he’d have fucked his voice . Listen to it . That is a man thraping the hell out of himself. But you know , it’s guts and emotion and all the rest of it. He pushed his voice to the limit . He’s using distortion , but I’m sure there’s a lot of tension in there , certainly at times. Listen to Bon jovi , loads of tension and strain surprisingly, or not perhaps. But he can’t sing now either unfortunately. It’s funny when people ask questions like that because it’s clear he was hurting his voice at least some of the time. If you wanna for Kurt cobain then go for it ! There are ways to get extreme sound with healthier approach but nothing extreme is completely ideal . I still can’t help but totally over do it with emotion at times but there’s no fucking way I could sing for 2 hours a night the same way I used to.
I think Chris Liepe may have done some videos about Kurt. Might be worth checking it out. Kurt was incredible in some ways, like his doubling of takes were absolutely perfect. Which is crazy coz it doesn’t seem like a perfectly orchestrated vocal. It seems like raw emotion but when he jumped in and did a double over the top, he sang it EXACTLY the same. Quite remarkable. And shows you that Kurt was way more meticulous and purposeful in his art than it may seem. And btw he used double takes to thicken the sound - check my vid on Your Ears Are Deceiving You for some insight on that side of it. My impression would be Kurt was on the edge of danger all the time. Sounds fucking great. But he put his voice through a lot. He maybe was technically singing better than it seemed also! Check Liepe’s vid !
