The Scale Playground is a desktop application that allows you to discover, hear, test and practice 400 musical scales from all over the world and for all genres. Play scales with your mouse, hear how they sound on chords, find them by name (1000 synomyns) and show all the scales that fit a chord. Connect your MIDI keyboard and never play the wrong note again. Find it here: gumroad.com/midi2themax.
Hi there, bought your device very recently. I like that you make everything happen straight in the piano roll, that makes it more easy to test and switch things around than Scaler 2 for example. I was wondering if you're planning to add more scale modes? I create EDM and quite often use the Phrygian and Dorian Modes, as well as Harmonic Minor for my work. Would be perfect if these would also be added to the Categories! Thanks for your great work!
We have no plans to add more categories at this time. In part, the reason is that most modes are equivalent to other major or minor scales, thus new catetories would contain duplicate progressions even if they appear different in the menu. For example, F Phrygian has same notes as Db major scale, and D7 Mixolydian is same as G major. That said, additional categories would surely make M2TM Progressions more useful, so we will definitively consider that feature. Thanks for the nice words and for the suggestion, this is the kind of feedback we love from users!
This tool is AMAZING best chord generator plugin ever ❤❤❤❤
Thank you! ... if you are into chords, have a look at our M2TM Progressions and the newest M2TM Notes
It would be nice if you could write with Python.
Yes, it would great! .... unfortunately it isn't possible to integrate a Python interpreter in a max-for-live device; the only language that M4L supports is JavaScript and in fact M2TM Notes supports a JS-like syntax. If they added support for Python, we would add it the next day!
This is fantastic i have been learning some live coding using python (foxdot) and supercollider and to to speak to ableton in midi and a JavaScript version of tidal cycles but to have something inside Ableton will be so much easier
Phantastic tool and very deep.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. We plan to evolve M2TM Notes into a full-featured programming language for musicians, and we genuinely believe that M2TM Notes offers a revolutionary approach to composing, with the potential to be a game-changer in music production.
Sorry, but' it's same price than scaler 2, isn't it ? It sound strange no ?
Not exactly. The lowest price for Scaler 2 (eg during Black Friday) is $29, twice as much as M2TM Chords. Regardless of price, the two products have different approaches. Virtually any task in Scaler require that you open menus. If you already know what chords you want to play, or you want to experiment with inversions, slash chords, upper extensions, etc. M2TM Chords can deliver MUCH faster.
This is awesome! Been looking for someone to make a Fugue Machine plugin. Thank you 🙏🏼
Thank you for your comment! ... we are very fond of Fugue Machine on iPad, and it was a clear inspiration for M2TM Fugue Maker. The main difference is, Fugue Machine is a sequence for live performances, while Fugue Maker generates notes in the piano roll and therefore it is more like a compositional tool (even though you can use it for live coding, to an extent)
I would like to try this out, but I am unable to buy it on gumroad ("Something broke. We're looking into what happened. Sorry about this!") after clicking "i want this". This happening for a week at least.
This is wonderful and fantastic, how does this work with the ACTUAL KEY of the Song - does it follow the SONG KEY at the Top or is there another way to follow the SONG KEY?
M2TM Progression contains "key-agnostic" progressions made of Roman numbers (in top center menu) which are combined with the root field to generate actual chords (cyan text near bottom). It does NOT follow the song key, and this should be considered as a feature because - in more complex scenarios, for example pop songs that contain modulations to other keys - sticking to the one song key would be a limitation.
I wish the comment wasnt spoken by a robot.
I wish too, seriously ... and I wish my native tongue were English, not Italian ... should I do the speakingt, I bet many people would say "please, bring the robot back !" 🙂
fair idea but you could certainly go a lot further to provide a musical demo in terms of sound choice and chord progressions.
thank for your comment ... when creating a demo you have to choose whether you want a tutorial that shows most/all feautures vs. a more musical demo that relies on the WOW! effect. This video is of the former type, hopefully others will follow...
🔥honest question can someone explain how to install this in ableton so I can start using it or better yet make a video? Thanks in advance, sorry for the newbie question🙏🏻definitely something I’m overlooking
The setup procedure for thbis and all MIDI tools is simple, and it is described thoroughly in M2TM Chords manual.
@@midi-2-the-max585 thank you🙏🏻🙏🏻
@@midi-2-the-max585Hi, your documentation starts by instructing to Unzip the contents of the download to a folder and then add this to Ableton - The download for M2TM Ableton 12 version is just a Single .amxd file. This file cannot be dragged into Ableton as it throws an error message 'patch contains a midi tool, midi tools cant be inserted as devices ableton' and there is only an option to 'add folder'. I wasted over an hour on this last night though I was tired. With a fresh head and some critical thinking skills I decided to just make a new folder, drag the .amxd file into the folder I made and add this to Ableton via places/add folder. This solved the problem and now M2TM showed up in the Transform section of the 'Clip'. I only got Ableton 12 Suite recently in the BF Sale. These Transform tools are all completely new. I don't know if your guide is Simple enough for noobs like me to get started but it is at least comprehensive enough to now learn everything about this wonderful plugin. I don't know if my experience above is just me being a noob or if I have stumbled on something helpful lol Anyway thankyou so much for this plugin its super nice.
Can you enter in chord numbers rather than chord names? I.e I, IV, V? Rather than A maj, D, Em etc.
you cannot, at least in this version. If you prefer the chord numbersfor chords, have a look at M2TM PROGRESSIONS, that comes with 170+ predefined progression in Roman notation, which can be rotated, reversed, transposed, etc. in literally BILLIONS of different combinations. th-cam.com/video/6J9ir2BTd_0/w-d-xo.html
This seems really useful and handy, hope to see more tutorials

Thank you. This is fantastic. Ive been using this all morning and love it. Will you also do a video for your Step device? 😊
thank you for your nice words, I am really glad that you like M2TM Progressions so much. I don't have plans to make a video for M2TM Steps myself, however I sent it to a few youtubers, hopefully someone decides to make one
This and Steps are fantastic!

Amazing demo!
I don't understand well : is it a standalone only ? How can I use it in Ableton as a midi filter/trigger?
Yes, it's standalone only. You can use in Ableton (or any other software) by taking MIDI from your keyboard, sending processed notes to a "virtual MIDI port" and have Ableton read from that virtual port. On Macs use the builtin IAC driver for the virtual port, on Window you must use a utility such as the (free) loopMIDI.
@@midi-2-the-max585 Thanks for your answer! I prefer things "inside DAW", I find them more fluent to use, moreover when working in full screen.
@@tobytodelafontena I fully understand, I too prefer things that work inside the DAW. You might want to have a look at my MXL Pack, with several Ableton Live plugins that can quantize incoming notes to any of the 400 scales defined in The Scale Playground. Read more here: midi2themax.gumroad.com/
