Feminist humanitarian funding approaches in climate and disaster crises webinar
Women, girls and gender-diverse people are disproportionately affected by disasters, especially those who have preexisting vulnerabilities because of structural inequities.
Women and children are 14 times more likely to die from a disaster than men. Transgender adults are twice as likely than cisgender adults to report being in poor health, which impedes full recovery after a disaster.
Yet funding to support women, especially in larger complex humanitarian emergencies (CHEs) is insufficient and usually does not go to women-led organizations. A feminist humanitarian response to crises and climate change is one way to address the root causes of women’s marginalization.
It is also a way to ensure that all vulnerable groups are identified and prioritized for assistance, that they have delegated decision-making power, and that intentional efforts are made to ensure people from all marginalized groups participate in the decisions that affect them, as well as in the response and recovery efforts in the aftermath of a disaster.
This response works to elevate women’s voices and leadership within and outside of the mainstream humanitarian structures.
During this webinar, donors learned from a diverse group of feminists:
- What a feminist humanitarian approach means.
- The challenges and structural inequities in the current, mainstream humanitarian response structure.
- How donors can incorporate feminist principles and approaches in their grantmaking.
CDP’s Vice President of Strategy, Innovation and Special Projects, Nicole Behnam, moderated the discussion.
Panelists were:
- Anzhelika Bielova, President, Voice of Romni
- PeiYao Chen, President and CEO, Global Fund for Women
- Nadella Oya, Founder and Director of createfuturegood, Chair of the Caribbean Gender Alliance, and Co-convener of the Caribbean Humanitarian Partnership Platform
This webinar was co-sponsored by Philanthropy California, Alliance Magazine, Council on Foundations, Philanthropy New York and United Philanthropy Forum.

#NoNaturalDisasters: Changing the narrative on disasters for philanthropy
มุมมอง 265หลายเดือนก่อน
How we think and talk about disasters influences our responses, including decisions on what crises and communities to support, and how and when we provide critical philanthropic resources. By continuing to use the phrase natural disasters, we position disasters as something we cannot control and have no influence over. Dr. Ilan Kelman, author of the book, “Disaster by Choice,” says that the phr...
U.S. severe weather: How funders can support recovery webinar
มุมมอง 1682 หลายเดือนก่อน
Globally, extreme weather disasters occur every day. According to the World Meteorological Association, 50% of all recorded disasters between 1970 and 2019 were due to weather, climate and water hazards. These disasters caused 2.06 million deaths and $3.64 trillion (USD) in losses. Seven of the top 10 costliest disasters in that period occurred in the U.S. In recent years, we’ve seen increasing...
Insurance and Mother Nature: How does losing insurance options affect disaster philanthropy?
มุมมอง 1662 หลายเดือนก่อน
Insurance is an incredibly helpful resource for families after a disaster, but not everyone can afford it. Many mortgage brokers and banks require insurance to approve home loans. Increasingly, insurance companies cannot keep up with the impact of multiple climate crises, leaving many homeowners facing substantial increases or turning to state-run insurance plans. Florida, California, Texas, Lo...
It gets hotter every year: How to proactively fund the heat crisis
มุมมอง 2034 หลายเดือนก่อน
Extreme heat is the number one weather-related killer in North America and many other parts of the world. It kills more people in the U.S. than hurricanes, tornadoes and floods combined. Human-caused climate change has been contributing to global warming and leading to record-setting temperatures in countries worldwide as the planet continues to get hotter. This will only worsen, and like many ...
From pets to heroes: The role of animals in disaster response and recovery

Disasters affect animals in many ways. For example, the 2019-2020 Australian bushfires saw huge funder interest when nearly three billion animals, including more than 60,000 koalas, were at risk. Pets in disasters became an important issue for disaster responders after Hurricane Katrina when many people refused to evacuate because they did not want to leave their pets behind. This issue flared ...
Beyond breaking news: Local journalism’s role in disaster recovery webinar
มุมมอง 1336 หลายเดือนก่อน
Media has a critical role to play before, during and after a disaster. When a big crisis hits, national and international media outlets send cameras and reporters to the scene to cover the story. But day in and day out, local journalists are on the frontlines in their communities, telling the stories that people need to know. Media coverage of disasters is wide-ranging. Awareness of a disaster ...
Race and poverty: Connecting disparities, disasters and equitable recovery

Pre-existing disparities significantly impact one’s ability to recover after a disaster. These disparities are interconnected. For example, studies have shown that climate disasters disproportionately affect communities of color and other marginalized populations within the United States. These groups are more likely to live near toxic waste sites, experience higher exposure to air pollution an...

More than 45 million people living in the United States were born outside its borders. In fact, the U.S. has a higher number of immigrants than any other country. In 2020, due to closed borders and other COVID-19 restrictions, slightly more than 400,000 people crossed a U.S. border to claim asylum. In the 2022 and 2023 fiscal years, that number exceeded 2 million people, many of them unaccompan...

Within the continental United States, the colonization of Indigenous tribes led to the loss of 99% of previously managed Indigenous land. The new ‘tribal lands’ - usually undesirable areas tribes were forced onto - are areas that are more at risk of climate change and natural hazards. One study found that Native Americans living in tribal communities now face exposure to increased heat, drought...
Funding low-attention disasters: From preparedness to long-term recovery

Disasters are increasing. But it’s not just big-name disasters that are more frequent. The biggest growth comes from so-called “secondary perils,” which SwissRe describes as “high-frequency, low-to-medium-severity events such as thunderstorms, hail, wildfires, drought, flash floods and landslides.” Secondary perils also include the aftereffects of a more significant natural hazard event, e.g., ...
