THE RELENTLESS DUST: Taking Action for Amboseli
TAKE ACTION FOR AMBOSELI: Matching Gift Opportunity
It’s been 7 months of severe drought and relentless dust. Livestock and wildlife alike have succumbed to the worsening conditions. We don’t yet know the extent of the impact of the drought on population numbers, but we know it’s extreme.
But today, at long last, we have a reason for hope: the short rains have arrived in some parts of the ecosystem. While this is cause for celebration, if we don’t receive more we will be in continued trouble. The meteorological forecast is mixed, suggesting that the situation could either get better or become more desperate. Only time will tell.
In the meantime, we have not been sitting idly by.
We started by helping the most vulnerable in our community: helping to provide lunches for school children and creating a temporary work program for local Maasai women.
On the wildlife side, we’ve been pumping water and putting out hay and feed pellets in strategic locations to help the wildlife populations most likely to recover survive. And since weakened livestock are easy pickings for predators like lions, we’ve increased our predator compensation threshold for local Maasai herders to help prevent retaliatory lion hunts.
Our rangers have been pushed to the brink. From fighting wildfires to stopping an escalation of bushmeat poaching, they are undertaking some seriously hard work and saving wildlife by the hundreds in the process.
And even though the rains have started to fall, it will be months before the grasses recover. The ramifications of this environmental crisis will be felt for months.
Even more devastating, the drought is happening at a time when inflation has skyrocketed costs. The cost of ranger food rations has increased 55%. Fuel for patrols is up 40%. Predator Compensation Fund payouts are 65% over budget. Unless donations continue to come in the door, Big Life will be forced to make some hard decisions about what we prioritize.
Please help us with a truly life-saving donation today.
Any amount helps, and all donations up to $200,000 through December are being generously matched by Big Life’s global Board members and US staff.

Maasai Olympics: The Hunt for Medals, Not Lions
มุมมอง 3802 ปีที่แล้ว
The Maasai Olympics represent a history-changing shift from killing to conservation. At the behest of the Menye Layiok, or Maasai "cultural fathers," Big Life established this organized sporting event in 2012 based on traditional Maasai warrior skills to replace the long-held tradition of hunting lions as a mark of manhood, bravery, and prestige. Every two years, participating villages select t...

A Hidden Treasure: Protecting the Rhinos of the Chyulus
มุมมอง 1103 ปีที่แล้ว
Hidden deep within a mountain range in southern Kenya there is a treasure. Shielded from the world by an ancient volcanic landscape: the Eastern black rhinoceros. Thought to have been poached to local extinction, a remnant population of 15 animals was discovered in the late 1990’s. But poachers were still intent on killing every last one. In the first 5 years, 8 of the remaining rhinos were kil...
WE ARE BIG LIFE
มุมมอง 1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In our battle to protect Amboseli’s wildlife, we have built a barrier against poachers. A barrier not made of bricks and mortar, but of human beings. People from local communities working to protect our wildlife. Ranger by ranger, our force has grown bigger and bigger. More than 300 rangers now protect 1.6 million acres. No one knows our home, or how to protect it, better than we do. The work w...
Big Life & The Lions of Kilimanjaro
มุมมอง 92710 ปีที่แล้ว
In a battle against spears and poison, lions lose. As do cheetahs, leopards and all the other predators of Africa’s plains. Back in 2003, on the Maasai lands around Mt. Kilimanjaro in Kenya, the situation was desperate. The fate of the remaining few lions was just about sealed. And then, in one of the most encouraging successes of modern conservation, a last-ditch solution was found that Big Li...

I have been thinking about this for a while and may be ignorant. If poachers are going for the tusks why cant we as conservators drug them and cut the tusks? It may not be a great answer but at least they may be left alone.

    • @cindylong624
      @cindylong624 7 ปีที่แล้ว

John Bowyer Tusks are embedded into the skull and to cut the tusks would not deter a poacher.Kill the demand for ivory-no demand=no poaching

What really brings home the importance of this project is not the images of elephants and rhinos who have had their faces literally sawn of by chainsaw. It is something far more horrifying ... It's the fact that 10% of the african elephant population is killed EACH year.
