    This Thanksgiving cactus arrived today. Mail ordered. I replanted it because it was too hot. I watered it and put it under a grow light. The bottom leaf is pale but still firm. All three leaves are the same. Any thoughts? Only the bottom leaf on each plant is pale and grey in color. Rest of plant is green. Not vibrant but green and standing erect in new potting soil.

      @BelovedPlant หลายเดือนก่อน

      Base / bottom leaf: as long as it's not soft if you press it. In mature plants the base gets pale/woody. Although we call it leaf, each segment is actually part of a stalk. So it's expected that the base gets woody as the plant mature and grows.

      Hi, there. Is the plant blossoming from its center? Tip: every succulent that blossoms from its center will die. The way to save it is to cut off the flower stem as soon as it emerges from the center. If it's too late for that, I hope new plants will emerge from the cut stem. The rooted base should be the part with higher chances to create new plants. It may take time, so keep watering and keep the faith 🤞🏻

      I think it was not a bad idea, now you have a piece of the stem in water and another piece in dirt (this one with the original roots?). When it comes to just the stem with no leaves on it, I've had more luck over here with the rooted stem in dirt than with pieces of stem with no leaves on water. If you know you've overwhatered and they are droopy, take it out of the pot and check the roots. If the roots have rotten, you will need to propagate by selecting the next healthy section of the plant for it

  • @Peleski

    Generally with water propagation the roots are glassy and fragile. It would be best to transplant as soon as the roots appear and the leaf is re-hydrated.

    Interesting take on watering for succulents.. I've always thought, heard and applied the use of less water for succulents because their leaves themselves retain so much water and one of the most common ways to kill one is overwatering which leads to rot. Obviously your are doing quite well. What is your take on rooting? I typically lay a leaf down on top of substrate and use a little water as possible and they sprout right up and so was curious as to your prop methods and if your using lots of water for that as well.

    • @BelovedPlant
      @BelovedPlant 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Howdy, thanks for your comment. You might be surprised with my preferred method of propagation: IN WATER :D -- Whenever there's a stalk involved I let them callus over and I dip them in water. The same could be done with leaves, but I prefer what you just described (directly on soil) for leaves. About rotting in general, every time there was rot with one of my succulents, there was some sort of bug infestation involved, larvae of some sort... and they only thrive in wet/moist soil.

      @@BelovedPlant Do you have a vid on succulent propagation? I've done many cuttings of various plants but they all have their preferences, mostly concerning the preferred substrate used, containers?, covered? You mentioned your stemmed cutting in water which I'll try. I ask bc I'm actively trying to increase my succulents by type and number.

    • @BelovedPlant
      @BelovedPlant 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have a few actually, but this one captures the less obvious methods: th-cam.com/video/anVFjKR1H4I/w-d-xo.html Watch it with a generalist view, if you can, meaning, methods apply to most succulents and, sometimes, even house plants. As for substrate, succulents are so easy, they will go with anything. I am lazy with watering, because I have so many. So I use heavier soil on them. If you are more disciplined, or even feel the urge to water them :D then go with something lighter. But they do thrive with good watering, I think there's a certain myth around succulents not liking water.

    Nice collection! I live in San Diego, California, sí these are all like bread and butter down here 😊 …but a cool thing about the _Crassula undulatifolia_ (or ‘Ripple Jade’) shown at 07:20 is if given the space, it will form a nice low mounding shrub. Most jades will get rather fall when allowed to,mbut ripple jade stays three feet or less. Never seen it taller honestly. When they’re planted en masse or in a row somehow, the “undulatafolia” effect is very visible, as it appears to be a seafoam-green undulating wave. They don’t even need to be very mature for that effect to happen. Also you can “bonsai” the crap out of jade plants, make a nice little tree, save the cuttings for new plants, etc. They can grow in shockingly small pots, like a bonsai, and they handle their roots being chopped off like a pro, compared to the delicate trees and shrubs used in traditional bonsai. Anytime a jade is getting unruly, literally behead the plant and stick it back in dry soil. Wait a week, or maybe let it dry it out for a day first. But no fuss, no muss! And the root stalk you cut it from will produce new babies, too… don’t toss that either! The jade you showed after that, the smaller _C. ovata_ is called ‘Crosby’s Compact’, and it’s one that I’ve noticed will actually grow with a nice pendant or hanging growth habit. Great for hanging baskets, elevated arrangements, or anyplace where a succulent can trail. I remember my friend had one of those, years ago, before I knew what it was… I was surprised to see a “trailing jade”, as I always used that nickname for _Senecio jacobensii_ (if you know what I’m referring to). That’s a separate genus; I believe it was recently moved to _Kleinia_ or _Curio_ (with string of pearls, dolphins, watermelons, fish hooks, etc.), and thus is not a “senecio” anymore. It does resemble a trailing jade, though ‘Crosby’s Compact’ is the real deal.
