Always great explanations Katia 😊 Thank you! ❤
@@patriciamattei2362 you are welcome!
Lighter bases give more room for highlight/contrast, that is true. My alcohol marker collection is only the pastels and midtone sets from Ohuhu for that reason... it's 120 colors and almost none of them are too dark. One of the biggest complaints I have about most marker brands is not enough light shades. Faber is especially bad about it, although they make beautiful products. That is one of the reasons I only buy products available open stock. You can always darken light bases, but you can only lighten darker bases to a certain extent. It's often frustrating as you wind up with a bunch that you seldom to ever use. For a budget product Crayola is surprising well stocked with light shades in thier supertips. I really wish they would release the Colors of the World markers in the supertip range, the two they have, the fat and thin, just are not very useful. The other alternative is to dilute dark colors with a wet brush, or to use a pigment based watercolor pencil instead either with water or alcohol blender for basing.
@@waymire01 yes I agree. That’s why I tried a way I can use all the colors in my marker set and work around that. Now I don’t have that problem anymore. But I use a lot of white gelpen 😅
This is how I approach it. Do the base, do the basic shading.. then when done with the whole page go back in with poly black, paynes grey, or sepia (depending on the base color) for shadow and prisma white for highlights. If I had to pick one of the polys it would be paynes grey as it is the most universal shadow color being a mix of grey, purple, and blue. You can use other pencils but it's worth it to get these open stock and I will tell you why. Polys are transparent, so they actually change the color underneath as a glaze instead of laying on top it gives you a darker version of that color instead of just it's own color. Prisma is very easily blended and very opaque so it has the power to show up on top of the color underneath while still being able to smoothly blend, enabling the same type of color transition. I keep those specific pencils separately, along with my pencil sharpener, etc, and use them regardless of what pencils/markers I'm using on a particular page. I go through them so often I have an extender for each of them. You can still go in with a posca and add a pop of bright white if you wish, and even use a black fine pen to add very dark areas as well. Just be very selective and hit only the very lightest or darkest points. I tend to use dots instead of a full line around an edge, I find it gives me more control, keeps me from going overboard with it, and gives a "sparkle" to the page. It's tempting to do each element all at once, to color all the leaves completely and then move on to the flowers, etc... or to shade an element evenly all the way around... but this has the effect of giving the entire page the same value. It's not so much how dark and light everything is, but where the dark and light is located. You need to be selective, and it's easier to see that once everything has some color on it. For example there should be a darker shadow behind items that sit on top of another item, such as where an ear lays over a hat, or where a leaf crosses another. In a bunch of flowers, the ones underneath and behind should be darker than the ones in front and on top. In a single flower the petals underneath and behind should be darker than the ones on front and on top. The same is true for all elements on a page. This is what gives the page dimension. You can start this from the base layer, but you can also use the same base and adjust with the pencils on top. Once you get good at it you can go in after the base and add your deepest shadows all in one go, this can really help create a map for the rest of the shading.. just be very selective again and don't outline everything.. just the darkest areas. If you are comfortable with markers you can do this with a grey marker as well (choose a lighter grey than you might think, test on scrap paper first, it will come out darker than you think since there is already color underneath), creating your own greyscale or grisaille. The soft brush pitt pens are awesome for this, but you can do it with others. Pencil is more forgiving than marker though if you are unsure, it can usually be lifted where once marker is down.. it's there to stay.
Wow such a great idea Katia thank you for sharing ❤

I agree, I really wish I had gotten a copy of her Mermaid book while I had the chance. I have no idea why these popular coloring books are not republished. I could understand if a book wasn't popular but when people are fighting over used copies it only makes sense for a publisher to meet demand.

Katia, you’ve had such a productive and colorful month-it’s truly inspiring! 😍✨ The pages you’ve completed are absolutely stunning, and as always, I was so happy to see you use a palette from my Autumn Delights book! 🍂💖 Regarding AI-generated images, I’d love to share a bit about my process! I’m a researcher by nature-sociology was actually my major 😉-so when I work on a collection of palettes, I always start with selecting themes, which later form the foundation of the book. Then comes the research phase, where I explore online and offline reference pictures to craft each palette. Only after the palette is finalized do I use an image generator, feeding it the exact colors I’ve chosen to create a visual representation. I’m quite happy with my prompting strategy, as it allows me to generate images with that fantasy aesthetic while staying true to my selected colors-though I do notice AI sometimes adds its own subtle touch🧐, which I’m totally fine with! I find this process exciting and creatively fulfilling. 💖 Plus, as much as I’d love to have hand-painted illustrations for every single palette, that would be far beyond what I could realistically afford. With AI, I have the freedom to curate-keeping only the images that truly align with my vision, which is deeply satisfying. Thank you again for sharing your gorgeous work and for always bringing inspiration to the community! 🥰🎨
@@Joanna_Stone I had some comments that people are against AI. And I agree when it replaces the art of an illustrator like coloring books. But in this case it something completely different. It’s an addition to the book but not the main focus. So I am totally fine with it. I would never buy an AI coloring book for sure. 👍
@@bubbleofcoloring Katia, I totally get where you're coming from, and I really appreciate your openness on this topic! 💖 AI replacing traditional illustration is a whole different debate, and I completely respect and understand the concerns people have. As a colorist myself, I couldn’t agree more-nothing beats a coloring book that’s hand-drawn or digitally illustrated by a human artist! 🎨✨ In my color palette books, AI-generated images are simply a supporting tool-a way to showcase the palettes and help people visualize how colors might come together. The palettes themselves are always the main focus. And honestly, I love witnessing the process of AI blending the specific colors I’ve chosen with the theme-while always adding a little something extra on top of my request. 😅 It’s like a toddler who just has to throw in their own touch! 😂 And I totally agree-AI coloring books aren’t for me either! 😅😂
@ Keep doing you. Your books are a great tool! 😀 and unique to everything I’ve seen.

@@elliemcgeeart Glad you like it
I feel like since alcohol markers became so much less expensive and more available water based markers have become a bit of a lost art. I was determined to learn how to use mine better and spent a lot of time looking for videos and tutorials. I found the best were quite old ones (8-10 years) which taught techniques that allow you to actually lay them down smoothly and blend them, such as using one marker to pick up the ink of another off a palette, or using the colorless blender in the same way to add shading on a second layer without streaking the color underneath. I actually love my Tombows now, they just sat for a couple of years before. I can't get this brand in the US, I looked hard when you showed the alcohol version because it was so nice... but I am very impressed with the quality of their products for the price. I love that the colors are consistent between the different marker types, and the useful cases they include that stack up. From what I can tell they offer over 100 colors, but you have to collect the small sets to get them all. The website offers an 8 page color chart with swatches and numbers. Perhaps you can find one of the smaller sets with those pastel colors and neutrals that you are missing. I agree about the brush tips, I find the tip is a big factor in how well they can perform. I was planning to purchase the big set of Staedtler pigment pens when they released in the US, but I bought a small set of both them and the Pitt pens to try while I was waiting, and I just don't get on with them well.. I think it's mostly the tip. It's so small I really struggle to lay them down smoothly or blend well on anything but a very small area. It just doesn't hold enough ink and cover enough space, so you have no choice but to use a lot of tiny strokes. The fact that it doesn't include a clear or a white really restricts them as well. I did a full page, and it was really difficult, then I did some smaller designs and used my Tombows side by side with them and the Tombows were just so much smoother and easier. The Tombows also work much better with water which makes them more versatile. I'm glad I tried a few pigment pens first. The dye based pens are not lightfast, but for coloring books it's really not an issue.
If you like to use the waterbased markers deluted with water, the Stabilo pen 68 are wonderful for that technique. I use them for small spaces because you can’t cover big areas. But the pigment is superb. 😊 I only own 7 tombows because they are very pricy LOL. Maybe one day…
@@bubbleofcoloring I started my Tombows with select small 6-10 marker sets sourced at local department stores or online that were much cheaper per pen that way. Just keeping an eye on the color selection so I didn't get a bunch of duplicates. Tombow has an excellent swatch chart available for free on their website which made it easy to keep track of what I had and what I was missing. Then started filling in the missing colors open stock a few at a time when I saw them on sale at various art supplies, they go on sale often, or tossing a couple into an order if I was buying something else anyway. You can buy that lovely hard Tombow case the full set comes in separately, I got mine from Blick for about $15. I adore that case, I just wish more other brands would fit in it. Probably more money at the end of the day, but easier on the budget at the time of purchase. Thank you for the Stabilo pen suggestion.. I see they are available open stock as well. I also recommend the Faber Castell Goldfaber Aqua markers as a suppliment, the brush is a bit larger than the Tombow but the quality is great and they offer some beautiful unique colors (vintage pink, purple grey are both favorites, along with the traditional faber greens.. they also have a lot of pastels).. also available open stock.

@@jennyjarvis2106 you are welcome 🤗
I'd love to see tutorials for all sorts of things. I'm a new colourist trying to learn as much as possible by imitating other people's styles and seeing what works best for me.
@@zeinababukar1933 I started out in the same way 😀 you have to find your own style. Experiment as much as possible and more importantly: have fun doing it.
@@bubbleofcoloring Thank you, I did some experimenting today and it was quite fun! It can be scary sometimes to get over the fear of ruining a page but I have to remind myself it's fine because I can always repurchase the book later on if I really want to!
@ that’s true! I am planning to buy my first coloring book again because I ruined so many pages. It’s not the end of the world 😊
