It depends, first you need to know if you are properly describing row spacing which is from the center of plant to center of next plant. I would caution that if you are planning on having grass between your rows that you widen it by a foot or by year 3 you will not be able to run a riding mower between. Our row spacing is 6 foot, our plant spacing is 3 foot, our row length is 600 feet which ended up being 13 rows wide per acre and came to 2600 plants per acre for our configuration. Given a 5 X 3 spacing you would require around 2900/acre.

Thank you! We found a whole sale place for plugs that sells trays of 100 for 79 dollars. We will start off with 400 plants at a time to ensure we get them established properly using black weed barrier. I plan on using a box blade between our rows to create a small elevation for our beds. We may spread the rows 7ft apart as that's how wide my tractor is, an old oliver 1750, then plant crimson clover in between or micro clover to keep the weeds down and feed our bees while they are getting established. @@mitchellfay5725 Sounds good, expect up to 5% loss and be careful with plug size, they arent really ready for direct to ground and your losses may be higher. I would recommend moving them to 2" and not planting them until they are almost rootbound in a 2" pot size. Consider something other than clover, we did a clover grass mix in between and the clover ended up being a nightmare as it creeps over the mat where the grass does not. This then adds a place for grass clippings to accumulate, breakdown, and then create a suitable growing environment for tall weeds that then must be removed when you harvest. You will then end up having to lift the clover off the mat by adding fingers to the edge of your mower and then slow your mowing operation down. Our next acre we add will be 100 percent covered as 6 months of the year for us are continuous maintenance of the grass, although it looks good, it is a HUGE labor burden. Good luck!

It's still profitable for us, however, if you are not willing to spend your weekend at a farmers market or craft show here and there for a few years while building the brand, learning the outlets, and cold calling you will never develop sustainability or success. If hard work, long days, late night order packing, and sacrifice of your summers doing maintenance and public events sounds like a bad deal, I wouldn't recommend it because you will not be profitable without that investment of time.

@@lavenderfarm Definitely not willing to spend my weekend at a farmers market. That sounds miserable. I just want to grow some and sell it to a middle man or wholesaler. Seems like I'd have to interact with people if I did what you're doing. I want to get away from people not spend more time with them on the weekends!

It's a lot of work and just when you think youre on top of it you find more work! Utah has a very large commercial farm, huge!

Victor Gonzalez of Victor's Lavender does consulting for new farms, there is also another resource and that is the USLGA US Lavender Growers Association, maybe there is something similar in Canada. The biggest problem up there is weather. Stick with Angustifolia varieties, they are heartier and they can survive lower winter temps. We did a lot of our beginning research by google...crop spacing soil requirements, etc. Plant a test area, test your soil, dont go big quick it could cost you!

Check out the US Lavender Growers Association site for a list in your area, we use victors in washington state BUT depending on where you live they may not ship well and shipping can some times exceed the price of the plant.

Grosso or Super are great or any intermedia for your first crop because it gets big fast...so you can get started having huge growth in a hurry. There are several commercial varieties though, mayette, grosso, folgate, super, hidcode, mellissa, sachet, the list goes on. Just depends on what your intent is...Buds, bunches, oil, culinary, tourist draw, etc. also depends on your particular growing zone and microclimate.

@@tomascastillo4676 Currently we do not and we and most growers do not recommend planting from seed. Lavender is weird, you can take all the seeds from one variety plant, throw them on the ground, and what you end up with next year can be shocking. Some vary in color, size, aroma, etc. It is best to grow from starts made from cuttings of a mother plant or crop to have a true clone of the plant you wish to grow.

Michigan is good, stick to true lavenders anything x. angustfolia. Much heartier in cold weather. PH 6-8 and well draining soil. Professional soil sample is a must!

This is the initial test run and function check of our still. Field, open, and mobile distillation operations are common and some businesses are actually built to do just that as a paid mobile service. The still is sanitary as were the bathrooms and wash area in the building stage left and the extracted oil remains in the sanitized separator until draining which is done into a sanitized glass carboy so I am unclear as to the "OMG" status. This video illustrates 2 steps in the complete process of making a bottled lavendin oil you would find on the shelf, the remainder being further separation, filtration, aging, and rather expensive 3rd party batch GC/MS testing.

Ha Ha! You know I have no clue, it is an option in the video editor software we use. It is pinnacle studio 16 and they have a whole library of freeware type music scores that you can adjust the length on. Looks like it is categorized as "world" and the score name is "Desert Trail." Then you can further tweak it to your liking in the software. The birds and rustling adds to it and that was just what the camera picked up in the field, decided to keep that.

That is just a 2" hole auger can be hooked to any decent quality cordless drill. It came I believe from either walmart.com or amazon and has lasted for several thousand holes now. Love it, would not recommend it for rocky soil though, ours is pretty easy to work but it would twist your wrist up in a hurry with large rocks. It was super cheap, like under $20.

One more thing - how many holes can you make with one battery charge?

I dont really remember... must have been at least 50. We had 4 batteries and two chargers to keep us going but we were planting pretty quick and that seemed to keep up with us.

Not currently, but that is the plan in the future when it gets all mounted to a small trailer. I will install a diverting valve so I can temporarily divert water as needed to the boiler for refill and inject the warm water 80 deg or so instead of well water which is about 48 deg. Currently I refill with well water but you have to go slowly or it really disrupts the thermal balance and causes it to slug flow water into the bottom of the pot instead of steam.

The black mat under the lavender is called woven nursery ground cover and stays there for the life of the crop
