G'day Alan, thank you ever so much for uploading this delightful arrangement of 'Bonnie Wood o' Craigielea/Waltzing Matilda'. As an Australian, I love it. Some of the ill informed folk singers who live in country to the south of Scotland still think that we Aussies pinched 'Waltzing Matilda' from 'The Gay Fusilier'. We didn't: we pinched it from James Barr, a Glasgow local. Your upload is not only lovely to listen to, but it tells the story of how the two tunes are connected so much better than it can be told in words. Thanks again. I developed an interest in the origin of 'Waltzing Matilda' about 4 years ago and have done extensive research on the origin of the tune since then. About 2 or 3 weeks ago I obtained a copy of 'Bonny Wood of Craigie Lee' from 'The Miniature Museum of Scotch Songs and Music' published in 1818, from the Glasgow University Library. This is the oldest published version of the song. The melody was what I expected but the arrangement was a complete surprise. I cannot work out whose arrangement of 'Bonnie Wood of Craigielea' you used in your upload. You might like to get a copy of the 1818 arrangement of 'Bonnie Wood' from Glasgow University Library. The melody in this arrangement fits your narrative even better than the one that you used. Would you ever consider adding the original tune of 'Waltzing Matilda', as supplied by Christina Macpherson to Banjo Paterson in 1895, to the mix? This would add another link to the chain. The original version of 'Waltzing Matilda', written in 1895, is a priceless, but not at all well known, gem of Australian folklore. The one that everyone knows and Australians love was an advertising jingle for Billy Tea arranged and published by Marie Cowan in 1903. Thanks and congratulations again. It is wonderful to see a group of people enjoying making music together.

Hi Brian Glad you liked the video. We love the Craigilea/waltzing Matilda set. I did the arrangement, and we found that audiences loved to sing along with Waltzing Matilda. We’re based in the west coast of Scotland, and Craigielea in Paisley is very near to our base, so the tune has added relevance. I’ll try to listen to the original Waltzing Matilda. Allan

@@allanmacdougall4095 Allen, I live in Brisbane, Queensland, and Winton and Dagworth Station, where 'Waltzing Matilda' originated, are just 2500 km up the road in Central Queensland. There are only two uploads of to TH-cam, of the original 'Waltzing Matilda', that I would regard as valid interpretations of Christina Macpherson's mistake ridden manuscript. There was no piano at Dagworth so Christina learnt how to play a very early model autoharp/volkszither in about 7 or 8 weeks and as Christina and Banjo collaborated on the song , most of the music was supplied by Christina playing the autoharp. If you type "Autoharp Waltzing Matilda original version" into TH-cam, you will bring up Tony Archibald's upload of the song. There is a rather weird but meticulously researched upload of the song, sung by a vocaloid. To listen to it, type. "Vocaloid Oliver Waltzing Matilda" into TH-cam and you will hear that the same melody from a very different source. Brian.
