Chandler - Suite (2020)
Michael Clark, piano
Recorded December 2020
My Suite draws inspiration from Baroque movement genres: it begins with a prelude, follows with dance movements at varying degrees of abstraction, and concludes with an extensive continuous-variation form. But underneath this stiff surface structure, another story unfolds. A motive (consecutive perfect fourths moving chromatically) works its way into each of the five
movements. Sometimes this motive is the cell that generates the sound world of a movement, sometimes it intrudes on a movement already in progress. These varying approaches allow the motive to shift its role between an agent of unity and an agent of chaos.

I composed Night Music for the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, a mixed chamber ensemble of strings, winds, piano, and percussion. At the time, my compositional style was changing rapidly, and I had not yet worked out an effective way to manage mixed-instrument ensembles in my new harmonic language. Without a satisfying solution to the problem, I chose to work outside the parameters - rather than c...

What I notice in modern composition since ca 1930 till now apparently: why the constant and confusing change of metres? Everything sounds like 4/4 in rubato anyway. Very interesting and well sounding composition, varied and captivating .

Fantastic music (also the combustion preludes), I like your style of incorporating more traditional elements of melody and harmony into an otherwise full repertoire of contemporary techniques, very fluent and with an atmosphere of fun!

Thank you! The combination of those elements is important to me. I think of it as melody + magic. Melody allows us to be emotionally engaged in music, while magic (orchestral effects) creates a sense of wonder.

It's about repeating a musical idea in a continuous cycle, and, with each repetition, the idea gets compressed into a shorter amount of time.

The first movement may be one of the most prettiest things I've heard in my life. A truly peculiar soundworld that I'll remember for some time. Sadly, none of the subsequent movements quite lived up to the expectations set. I understand the need for contrast but most the rest of the movements seemed to default to this sort of staccato pointillism or ostinato driven moto perpetuo style, while I waited for a slow lyrical legato movement that never quite came. Maybe this is all a matter of taste, but I do feel that in these sorts of song cycles, you have ample opportunity to explore quite a few moods of the ensemble, and it seemed like only one end of the spectrum was really covered in that regard, perhaps in disinterest, perhaps in some sort of fear falling too far back into tradition. Regardless, it's still overall a very solid and unique song cycle. I think there easily could be two or three more, in fact (a slow aria, a fugue, and maybe some sort of midtempo traditional dance) I hope you consider revisiting this at some point.

I like this piece a fair bit, but I would say the Ligeti influence is so overbearingly strong that it feels less like a mature work than a pretty good pastiche, from the form to the orchestration to textures to harmonic language, there's nary a second that doesn't sound like a deliberate imitation (save for the passage around 6:00 perhaps). And what was a fresh sound for a composer coming out of the 80s of the European avant-garde isn't quite so for a work in the 2020. Still, listening to some of your more recent works, I already see you moving onto something less derivative. Look forward to seeing what you continue to do. You clearly have a spark

Terrific piece. Because it only has 536 views in two years It reinforces our understanding that the opposite of popular music is not classical music, it is unpopular music.

Terrific stuff. It was so intense and engaging I felt that the piece could have successfully ended after the fourth movement. The fifth movement is lovely but seems to be coming from another place and time. The wonderful toccata brings us back and serves well as a finale. The whole thing is very musical and filled with drama and emotion.

Wonderful stuff. One of the very few modern works I know of that is pleasurable and beautifully crafted. Nice use of triadic harmonies in a tremulous sound field. I am sure the performers enjoyed it too.

Wow, congratulations! This is a wonderful composition! Very colorful and creative. I love, how you take quite traditional chords and melody fragments in some of the movements and succeed in not letting them sound conventionally through the ways, how you present them, playing with meter, rhythms, instrumental colors and techniques. That is both refreshing and unheard of and in the same moment organic and seemingly familiar. That is a compositional language I like very much. Here's a new sub!
