I post reviews and story discussions of books that I am currently reading. I place emphasis on philosophical discussion and writing craft from the perspective of a curious mind and a writer. I have a blog which includes reviews that I have not recorded into videos: leehuntswriting.blogspot.com/
I read and write Fantasy, SciFi, and other genres that catch my interest.
I have now published both Volumes of The Paths We Have Taken. This is the first Arc of The Broken Reality, which is a Grimdark Epic Horror Fantasy series. TBR takes the political intrigue of ASOIAF, the abrasive characterization of Abercrombie, the long-term story telling of One Piece, and the philosophical horror of The Second Apocalypse to explore the human capacity for cruelty.

Awesome! Great story. The visuals and music were a good addition to give it a David Lynch vibe.
Thanks!
Happy New Year 🎊
Thanks! You as well!
Finally! Love this series.
@@simondavidsmith I know, haha. I finished it two months ago,as well, but I was just lazy and busy the whole time.
@@leehunts4327 Can't wait for the Wounded Land review. It's a laugh a minute.
@ I’m taking a break for that second trilogy. We’ll see when I get to it.
Oh no, they had a lot of archers!! 😰😰
Good video! Looking forward to more. These kinds of discussions don't happen often on TH-cam.
@@JasonFuhrman Hopefully, I can keep on it. I want try for other angles, too, though we’ll see what that will amount to.
I read up to freefall, I guess i stopped at the perfect time to remember the series fondly
I did enjoy Closer, though it might have been the start of some of the bad trends the series went into.
I got closer but it was the European version and I thought it was a knockoff copy and never read it
Might check it out
Nice! It's a short read, too.
Yeah, this was definitely very stand out for its cynicism. And given that Harry Potter was at its best when it was dark, this was always among my favorite
Thank you for creating this video. As a kid this was a Shonen that was much more up my alley than Harry Potter; like others I remember reading the first few novels and only being able to catch up to the other ones later, which can make the plot transition for the last few books possibly worse. Tunnels and deeper were the biggest books in my elementary school library, and they definitely shouldn't have been there based on the rest of the series as it did indeed become quite horrific. I think they could have definitely achieved a more graceful set of final story arcs if they spent a couple more years at the drawing board, but overall the atmospheric and cynical aspects of these books create something more unique than anything else in your Middle School library.
I love how there is a climate change awareness ad under this video 😂
The thumbnail did you dirty
@@SavantPete Oh no, I chose it specially for this, haha
@@leehunts4327 Loved tbe video. The brainwashing is obvious.
Majestic. Thankfully, TH-cam has also added an info panel to this video about climate change, so now I know what it is.
It's about as embarrassing as Johnny The Walrus, except on the other side.
To be fair, Johnny the Walrus was deliberately inappropriate for children, haha
Pure gold
I can't believe this thing was written, lol
Another horrifyingly under-watched TH-cam channel, which I am happy to have found. Now going to work through all your Donaldson reviews!
Thanks! I'm reading The Power That Preserves right now.
After thinking it over, I think I am going to revise this story down to a 4/10. First, I think the split score approach was a bad way to capture my thoughts. I technically have a split opinion on all the books I review, so idk why this would be a more explicit approach here, as if I've chosen to do anything different. Second, I am increasingly convinced that this book was written in response to events similar to Steubenville, which I mentioned in the review. Nothing of the specifics have changed, but I do think the inapplicability of this book to events in the real world seriously handicaps the core theme.
You probably shouldn't speak for feminists and instead ask us what we believe and listen.
@@strangementalitypaperYT I’m reading a book on the various forms of feminism right now. I read about these and other forms during school. That is listening. And this video is simply discussing the ideas in a neutral context, is it not? All I did was read a book and summarize it. If your response is to demand what I’ve already done, and to further suggest that I’m speaking on your behalf, then it seems that you’re playing the victim and demanding special privileges. I will not simply believe. I will treat you as an equal by questioning you and holding you to a standard like anyone else. If you can’t handle that, then you don’t believe in equality. It’s almost like vague declarations of “equality” aren’t sufficient to define a belief system.
Good review! I think you're being a little over critical about some things, though I think it's partially a product of expectations since this book is lauded as a pivotal book almost universally. I pretty much went in expecting it to be a generic and empty sci-fi novel of the time and was surprised by a few things. I really knew nothing other than people thought it was great. I don't think a novel has to predict things exactly how they are to have merit. I think the fact that pronouns existed at all in this book was interesting, not that he hit the nail on the head. The empty protagonist can be explained one of two ways: 1. Haldeman just sucks as a writer and didn't realize he wrote a character who didn't react to things 2. Haldeman purposely had him be indifferent when confronted with "change" to not make it feel like he had an agenda through proxy I personally think it's the latter. While this book is far from perfect, I think it did a lot of great things considering when it was written.
It probably comes down to expectations to a certain extent. Don't get me wrong, the part about predictions was just me poking fun at the book. When I was trying to narrow down my rating, I did not have the prediction aspect in my head. It basically came down to the lacking character connection, the execution of the ideas, and the commentary on war. I don't know if the character connection aspect is related to the question of an agenda. I thought his agenda came through strongly enough, given the ultimate reason and purpose of the war. Unless you mean other accidental agendas that would distract from the main message. I kind of understand that, though I think it could be balanced out by having different characters react to the changes in varying ways (the initial ones, at least). I don't know how much I want to let my ratings be affected by considerations of when it was written. The exception might be prose. Other than that, I don't know where that might lead. I'm actually kind of surprised at how low the rating ending up being. I usually develop my opinions as I think them over and write them out, and by this process I am better able to predict my long term feelings of the book. Either way, I knew it wasn't going to be positive when I finished.
Most of Lovecraft's stories are looking back at a "horrible" event from the POV of one person. He also does show the monsters typically, although at the end, like most traditional horror stories do. I'd also look at the publication dates of the stories as you read. His early stuff is before he developed his mythos, so you'll find a lot of stories about monsters that don't relate whatsoever. The style of the stories can also be different. You do see his influences in his earlier work before he finds his own voice.
I’m starting with some of the suggestions you made on Discord. We’ll see what happens.
Went back and listened to this series I had framaneted memories of as a kid. Still love the series as a whole, but I'll be honest, one of the least satisfying endings possible. I understand wanting a bittersweet and even sad ending, but the arcs and ending of the three most important characters imo; Chester, Elliot, and Will, was not satisfying to me at all in Terminal.
Feminism in the broadest sense is a belief in equality between the sexes. The notion of equality between humans, irrespective of characteristics, is a fundamental tenet of basic human rights.
The last comment was the cherry on top. How far do liberal feminists take equality? I saw a Google result that said they oppose prostitution, but that seems like bodily choice to me.
Commoditisation of the body isn’t a free positive choice but the sad result of an oppressed society where individuals have few or no other choices.
@@helenasf1782 but regardless of the "why" wouldn't it still be fair to use your body how you want?
@@JasonFuhrman I see it as an oxymoron. Eg it’s like saying can’t someone be free to sell themselves into slavery.
@@helenasf1782 well take something like onlyfans. How do they feel about that?
@@JasonFuhrman As far as I understand, the original liberal feminists assumed that issues like this would inevitably disappear once women could own property and could educate themselves. Like Helena is suggesting, they assume it happens out of necessity in a patriarchal society. And some, especially the cultural feminists at the time, argued that the traditional marriage structure was a form of prostitution in and of itself. So they took for granted that it was bad.
Yeah, I really hated this book. But I guess I did like the brother, which I mentioned. If I want to be honest, I guess I should bump the rating up to a 1/10. lol.
Just finished reading this series on my kindle it was great. Read it as a kid forever ago and completely forgot everything by now 😂
It was fun going back to it. Those first four were great. Unfortunately, the last two seemed to have soured on me since reading them for this.
Semicolons! Haha Great review. I'm glad that despite the clear "inspiration" it took from Tolkien and the generic naming conventions there is a decent story here.
Never a bad time for a shameless plug. My own writing: Volume I: a.co/d/4RQKlVC Volume II: a.co/d/dh7FOHy
Compelling theory.
Boring.
Trust me, I've got even more boring books than this.
I loved this series and other stories you think I’d enjoy that you’ve read?
Mom Yatwer is nice, unless you are a damned sorcerer, blasphemous dúnyain, or disgusting inchoroi...
Barley anyone knows much about him. And we would not know if it was the truth. I don’t bother with him in my History studies.
That question occurred to me, as well. But it honestly strikes me as a much broader question, too. How much of ancient history can be trusted?
Nice summary
Things just happen in Malazan. Sanderson has very precise structure and deliberate world building. Let’s call it postmodern. “Things will get interesting after book 6” - usually means I got used to it.
Technology progressed to the point of interstellar conflict. 100 years from flying to going to the moon. Humans yay us. 1,000 years of Burna Brew for a Burna Torch is as good as on Orc needs for WAAAGH!
Which book did you start with? Also, 40k is a rabbit hole of lore and the reasons for humanity's stagnation is explained but it takes a while of reading to see why.
The emperor's gift. I know in retrospect that it probably wasn't a good entry point. I only read it because I read the first page or two and was pulled in.
@@leehunts4327 Fair. Give it some more time and reading. Like I said, it's a rabbit hole.
War does push forward innovation, but not while the war is happening. Using your example, the adam bomb was invented in 1942, but it wasn't till 9 years after the war in 1954 that we went, "oh shit we invented a new way to get electricity.....yeah i guess its not just a thing that goes boom huh?"
In short technology is it's on religion and too them everything that can be invented has been invented it's just a matter of finding the blueprints and of course with all religion they want too control it. In a nutshell but yes 40k is ment too be daft it's designed for every faction too have a reason to fight any other faction.
The mechanicus strangles innovation. If you invent something instead of finding old designs you are seen as a heretic and will be dealt with.
Dude, Imagination. Heard about it?
I think it is hilarious to put logic behind science fantasy. I mean if logic had anything to do with warhammer 40000 it would be sci-fi, spoilers its not sci-fi lol.
It's essentially illegal, because they can just recollect their old tech instead of risking lives to invent new stuff
good points. I think this warrants a longer video to really piss of the 40k fans haha
nice review! I have to stop before the spoiler section, but it sounds like I'll probably have the same issues as you once I finish the f final books. There's a lot of good stuff in it, though. Just some niggling bits that I'm not a fan of.
Tech hearsay will not be tolerated
Just a ramble on a series of which I don't have too much to talk about. I've found that if I don't write a scripted and detailed review that I am much nicer to the book than otherwise. Also, I think the fact that it is YA also affects my judgement. In any case, other than the fact that this ramble is dreadful to listen to, even with the edits I made, I think I covered most of my thoughts on it.
Showing your Warhammers while talking about Warhammer.
Nah, it's the hairy chest.
Interesting choice for a first Warhammer book. A lot of the books aren't that great but there's a few writers that are pretty good (though you won't really find anything worthy of "high art"). Dan Abnett is good but I find him to be a little overrated, good prose but he can be bad at actually constructing a narrative. Plot armour, inconsistencies with the lore, stuff not being explained. He's still very enjoyable, I recommend his Inquisitor series. I've been reading The Emperor's Gift recently and I've been enjoying it even if it's not amazing. Decent prose and nothing has really struck me as being out of line or inaccurate. Aaron Dembski Bowden, the writer for this book, is considered one of the best writers for 40k, though most of his work is in the Horus Heresy series which is very long. He's done books for the Black Legion, Night Lords and Raven Guard, all of which are said to be pretty good, though I haven't read them. Other authors that are worth considering: Guy Haley, Robert Rath, Sandy Mitchell, Gav Thorpe.
I just know that this book showed up at a bookstore for $50, because it was out of print, apparently. I read the first page or so and was hooked. I managed to get it for much cheaper. The author's prose was better than I expected. He uses too many adjectives, though. Haha.
@leehunts4327 most 40k books are out of print, cus the publisher just doesn't have the resources to constantly release pre-existing books. Some older ones are incredibly hard to find.
@@ChawedMirthPrattEnterprise That is the trend, from what I have seen.
The game is pretty fun but the narrative is not that great it really isn’t
