Railwayscenics is a UK online shop with over 3800 products to help model railway enthusiasts in their hobby. Not only that but we also sell products to other hobbyists too. We have been trading since 2008.
We only film videos of the exhibitions we attend as a trader in the South West of England, UK. All filmed on a mobile phone.

Our Top 10 Layouts of 2024

In light of the approaching end of 2024, we have decided to create a video showcasing our top 10 favourite model railway layouts from the various shows we have participated in as traders. Below you can find our own reasons for why they feature in our list:
Bodmin Moor (7mm/O) - I absolutely loved this layout. Instead of using moving trains, it was created to resemble a beautiful diorama that looked like a painting. The owner, who happen to be talented painter, hand-painted the backscene. I was very impressed by the attention to detail, such as each rock in the rock piles being individually placed and the meticulous construction of the dry stone walls. To top it off, the entire layout was even framed with a lovely wooden picture frame.
Keanes Cove (3.5mm/HO) - I was impressed by this charming layout at a show. Not only was it lovingly hand built and operated by a wonderful lady, but it also featured a unique non-English countryside theme. The scene depicted a peaceful waterfront setting, complete with a freight station that handled shipments to and from the cove, even delivering goods to the nearby lighthouse.
Rolstone (2mm/N) - The layout by the Bournemouth Model Railway Exhibition was awarded for being the best layout. It was such a joy to see the members of the Junction 72A Model Railway Club enthusiastically engaging with the public, letting both children and adults have a go at driving the trains on their layout. I even got the chance to spend an entire day helping out by running trains on their layout.
Portishead TMD (4mm/OO) - So much was happening on this layout at the same time. It had a modern theme featuring diesel locomotives. The exciting part was seeing Thomas the Tank Engine chug along, playing his theme tune thanks to a sound chip when kids were admiring the layout.
Shobrooke (4mm/OO) - We loved this layout because the two sections blended seamlessly, and the attention to detail, especially with the flora and fauna, was truly impressive.
Sandy Shore (4mm/009) - We really enjoyed the unique design of this layout! The focal point was the impressive giant lighthouse, and we loved seeing the beachgoers and colourful beach huts included in the scene. It was a refreshing change from what we're used to seeing.
Tony's Forest (O14) - We fell in love with this layout as soon as we saw it! The owner cleverly placed the railway at the back of the scene and filled the front with trees, plants, and animals. It was a joy to peek through the trees and catch a glimpse of the trains passing by. Spotting all the adorable animal figures like rabbits, birds, and foxes added an extra element of fun to the whole setup.
Kinmundy (4mm/EM)- I'm sure you're aware that we have a fondness for the unique and unconventional. This layout definitely fits that bill! It captures a Scottish countryside railway after a heavy frost, giving everything a subtle glittery dusting.
Abercynon Fach (4mm/OO) - This exhibit may be small in size, but it's packed with so much to see! You'll have to take a close look to catch all the little details. On one side, you can spot a tiny rubbish heap and sheep grazing in the distance behind the clear perspex. The other side of the engine shed is filled with intricate details as well. Plus, there are plenty of trains to admire too. So much to explore in such a compact space!
North Cornwall Brewery (4mm/OO) - I must say, this layout has quickly become a top favourite of mine. It was so wonderful to have a chat with the owner and learn more about the design. One thing that really stood out to me was the house being built on the layout - a unique touch that I've never seen before. The attention to detail was just incredible, right down to each vehicle having a scaled down tax disc and every single one of the 300 barrels being hand-painted. And let me tell you, seeing the layout after dark was a whole new experience that added a whole new level of ambiance. It's something I've never seen before on any layout.

Hi Railwayscenics. Many thanks for your nice comments. When I started the North Cornwall Brewery I thought I was just building another exhibition layout. Because it is what I have always done, I didn't realise it was anything special, but comments like yours make me feel that I have achieved something, which is quite humbling. We did win Best Layout In Show at Model Rail Scotland in 2023 so I guess I should have worked this out by now but all the same, you just always try and do your best. I'm still inspired by other people's modelling so I just hope that people go home and try to develop the skills like I have, over the past 60 years! Amazing layout! How did you make the cobblestones inset into the track?
@@Dagger2311 It's Slater's embossed Plastikard laid as complete sheets across the tracks. Railtops are marked with felt tip pen and this shows, on the reverse, where to cut it. The check rails are Evergreen plastic I beams painted to look like steel, superglued to the sleepers and then the Plastikard cut to fit in between them and glued to the beams with normal liquid cement. It's a long and tedious process! It also uses a vast amount of Plastikard but does allow you to continue the coursing across the tracks so looks right. And thanks for the nice comment.

Thank you for your comment. We try our best to give as much information about every layout as possible when we can. If not then we try out best to at least give the scale/gauge of the layout.

Nice video Gaby. Well filmed and megga brownie points for not getting members of the public hogging the limelight! Some really interesting layouts giving me a lot of ideas for our club layouts. We're a new club on the Black Isle in the Scottish Highlands and are modelling in "N", "OO" & "O" and hope to exhibit our "N" layout later this year. Second year I`ve been. This is a show I really like; some great layouts and some bargains to be had. My Mrs is into photography and was made very welcome, one P&DMRC operator stopped a train so she could take pictures of some detail. My son was at this school. The car park marshalls were a really friendly bunch too, happy to chat. All in all, an excellent show.
