You mention "based on mom and dad" but we are divorced and it's my understanding that FASFA only counts the parent who has most financial responsibility and doesn't even count the other parent. And that's even if the other parent is required to pay half of the tuition based on the child custody agreement.
You are correct! For divorce parents, the financial information is required of the parent predominantly responsible for finances, or who claims the child on their tax return.

So do they give me the fafsa loan amount directly to my bank account or is it only available by the college ?? Because I want to go to CDL school but i cant pay for my bills while in my semester
Most student loans are paid to the school directly and they credit your account. Direct student and parent loans are to be used for the college expense.
There is my understanding that you can go back in and change the FAFSA. If you’re unsuccessful, you would need to reach out to each school individually and tell them of the mistake.
Hi, I mistakely put my parent's TSP retirement stocks as parents ' assets on FAFSA. I am wondering if i can still make a correction after I already received the PAL? Thank you!

Thanks for the reply.
Young married grad student here... I am completely independent from my parents and have an SAI of -1500. In the COA - SAI = Need equation you presented, would my Need be capped off by my COA? Or would my Need > COA by 1500? Helpful video--thanks very much!
No, you are only eligible for the total COA. They don’t give you $1500 more!
Ok thank you!!

My SAI says ( estimated student aid index ) SAI = -1500 “what does that mean”
It mean you are eligible for 100% need based financial aid. Please watch for more details th-cam.com/video/vZVp4Z5iJtk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=edwc0-g0aGgKb2hs
😂😂😂😂 screaming doesn’t make it true
I am just so passionate! Working with 10-15 families a week, I see the impact of 529s and how 529s reduce the amount of need based Finanical aid. Families need all the help they can get 😊
@@MonicaFeltonCFP Please provide your source. As of 2023 (last time I filled out FASFa), UTMA balance hurts need based scholarship in FASFA form, not 529 plan. 529 was exempt. Rules might have changed between them and now.
529 plan must be reported and is usually a parent asset not student. studentaid.gov/help-center/answers/article/where-to-report-529-plan-in-fafsa
@@MonicaFeltonCFP That is correct! 529 plan as well as parents IRA must be reported but I think the 529 and IRAs are exempt from parent asset unlike the UTMA accounts. Reporting and adding to total asset that can reduce need based scholarship are two different things.
529 plans are not exempt.
Hi my estimated sai came to 10k what should i expect mam?
Your family contribution is at least $10,000. Depending on how academic the Student is and how badly the school wants the student, they can help you meet the rest of your need. But the SAI is the baseline of what you’ll have to pay, but most families have to pay more.
when being super poor actually benefits you 😂
Literally 😂😂
Maybe I should quit my job
thanks, that is really really good n valuable stuff!
You're welcome!
My SAI was -1500. What does that mean?
It means you’re eligible for need based financial aid. Watch for more info th-cam.com/video/vZVp4Z5iJtk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=XBgEyeCIm5WTpFzH

I apied for fafsa 3 days ago got it back and said processed... it dosent say if im getting a grant or financial aid loan.... do the schools reach out to me? Dont knlw where to go from here please help.
HI Carl, FAFSA is still processing your information. They have not sent it to your schools yet. You will need to keep checking back with FAFSA to see when you information has been released to the school. It is a very frustrating time right now. All i can say is I am so sorry and patience.
I just created a new video on Understanding SAI - Enjoy! th-cam.com/video/R2Vwik1hKgQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=YEvGEykp5zqs6tKj
It has been stressful- now we are still waiting- and it’s mid April
Yes, my heart goes out to you and all families with college freshman this 24/25 year. The rollout of the Fafsa simplification act has been a disaster. So much delay and uncertainty. We are all waiting with fingers crossed. Good luck to you and your family. 😇
Hello, I was wondering if the SAI is a negative number, what does it mean?
You can have a -1500 SAI. This means you are eligible for 100 % of your need. Very few schools met need 100% so you will need to pay something. You will be eligible for a Pell grant.
@@MonicaFeltonCFP Hi Monica I am new to your page. My daughter's SAI is a negative number as well. Will the amount the student is required to pay be somewhere in the range of the Pell grant amount they received or will be required to still pay something along with the Pell grant? Thanks in advance!
If your student index is negative that means you’ll be eligible for 100% need. The equation is cost of attendance minus student aid index equals need. Depending on the cost of the school, that will determine how much you’re eligible for. With a negative SAI, you will be eligible for Pell grant which are almost $8000 a year. This does not need to be paid back. Most schools, will not meet 100% need. Cost of attendance is $25,000, and your SAI is -1500 that means you’ll be eligible for help w 25,000. Likely, the school won’t meet 100% of the $25,000. Depending on the academics of your student, will determine how generous the school wants to be.
@@MonicaFeltonCFP Thank you!!

Hi @MonicaFeltonCFP I have twin kids joining this fall 2024. Their FAFSA Estimated SAI has come to 166545 (for each kid respectively) - what does this number mean? Does it mean it has assessed we can pay $166,545 over the total four years for the kid as opposed to say ech year respectively? And what does it translate into for our contribution to actual fees or to the amount of AID we could receive?
SAI is the baseline of what your family is expected to pay. Based on your assets and income, SAI expect you to pay $166,000 per student. This basically means you’re expected to pay for all college. You will not get any need-based financial aid help. But it’s possible you’ll get Merit money depending on the academics of your student. I would welcome a conversation with you. You look like you’ll be a full paid family and could use different strategies to make college more affordable. calendly.com/monicafeltoncfp/save-on-college
I just created a new video on Understanding SAI - Enjoy! th-cam.com/video/R2Vwik1hKgQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=YEvGEykp5zqs6tKj
Hello, How SAI # affect your Student Aid. Is it better a lower # vs a higher # or vice versa? Example: 1)Peter has a student SAI of 1000 2)Susan has a student SAI of 1820 Which student pay less for college if both go to the same school.?
SAI represents the baseline of what a family has to pay for one student to go to college. The lower, the SAI the less money the family is expected to pay. This is based on the government, the colleges might have a different idea. Colleges determine how much they want to help you with. If you don’t have a good student, the college doesn’t have to help you. SAI is just the baseline or first step to what you’ll have to pay for college.
In my experience, first come first serve, is inaccurate. It’s more important to fill out the forms accurately.
Thank you very much for the explanation!
Glad it was helpful!
Great question! SAI, or student aid index represents what you’re expected to pay for college. Both dependent and independent students will have a student aid index. To qualify for independent, you have to be at least 24 years old, married, on active duty in the US military, have children, an orphan, or be award of the state. As an independent, you can qualify for more financial aid because there’s no parents supporting you.
A negative number for your student aid index is new for the 2024 school year. Basically means your student aid index is zero. You’re expected to pay nothing. This will mean you’re eligible for pell grants but need-based Financial Aid from the school. How generous the school wants to be, is completely dependent on how badly they want your student to attend.
I am 68 years old. I filed my FASA on 2/24/2024. My estimated student aid index (ASI) is-1500. Does this mean that I have to pay all of my schooling.

Simple Question, what happens to the cash value when the person dies?
Your estate receives the death benefit, which is higher than the cash value. The death benefit will pay off any outstanding loans against the policy and the remainder goes to estate income tax free.
@@MonicaFeltonCFP So, BORROW against your own money only for the insurance company to keep, and you think this is a good plan?
I love the variation in your videos! Never gets boring on your channel :D!!! Fast results only = P-R-O-M-O-S-M !!
Can you pay the loan back with the actual money from the life insurance policy afterwards or will you be stuck having to pay the loan out monthly and making the premium payments as well?
You have choices; you can pay the loan back with income or other assets or never pay the loan back and when you die, the death benefit will pay the loan back first and then the rest will go to your estate income tax free.

When you die though, your cash balance defaults to the insurance company. This wasn’t mentioned in the video, so the arbitrage mentioned is limited to your life, if it exists at all.
