Hi there!
We are Diane & Christoph, two intrepid travellers that can forgo almost all creature comforts, except for good food, delicious cocktails and great wines. We love the open road, the company of interesting people, wide open spaces and cultural exchanges.
Join us on our adventures as we discover the wild side, for a taste of the Soul Tonic Life!
We are professional photographers based in the beautiful mother city, Cape Town and have been involved in food photography/styling and travelling writing. Our jobs and passion for food and travel have allowed us to travel to destinations far and wild, the wilder the better. We have travelled through Vietnam on motorcycles, a dhow in Madagascar, discovered remote corners in Namibia and slept in the wild only to be woken by the roar of a lion. Join us as we take you along with us on some incredible adventures travelling on planes, boats, motorcycles and 4x4.

Botswana Ep 11 4K Khwai to Mbudi Camp & Gliding alongside Elephants in a Mokoro on the Mbudi River
Hello and welcome back! Thanks for sticking with us on this wild ride-literally!
After soaking up the magic of the Delta, we leave Moremi ,straight into the lively little village of Khwai. This was our opportunity to stock up on firewood from the locals.
From there, we head toward one of our all-time favorite spots: Mbudi Camp. Perched on the banks of the Mbudi River, a tributary of the Khwai,
It’s a wild and wonderful camp and our kind of paradise!
In this episode we bake something different from the field kitchen and take the ultimate mokoro trip.
And so, this is the moment-the reason we venture so far into the wilderness. To find this fleeting serenity, silently floating along the Mbudi River in a mokoro, surrounded by the untamed rhythm of life.
Elephants graze on sweetest grass, fulfilling their ancient role in keeping the waterways open, while birds wade gracefully in the shallows, bathed in the warm afternoon sun. This is not just a spectacle but an experience only nature can provide-a delicate balance of being both voyeur and participant.
Here, you find tranquility. These last great wildernesses are no longer the frontiers of daring explorers but sanctuaries for the peaceful mind. They offer a rare chance to disconnect, to feel small in the presence of something vast, and to rediscover your place within the tapestry of nature.
Dutch oven Focaccia:
Start by making a fire using wood or charcoal to bake the bread.
Ingredients:
500g (4 cups) all-purpose or bread flour
10g (2 tsp) salt
7g (1 packet) instant yeast
325ml (1⅓ cups) warm water
60ml (4 tbsp) olive oil, plus extra for drizzling
1 tsp sugar
Optional toppings:
Sliced red onion
Dried oregano
Maldon salt
Instructions:
Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast till dissolved.
Mix the Dough
In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture. Mix until it forms a sticky dough.
Cover with a damp dish towel and allow it to prove in a sunny draft free spot, till it has doubled in size.
Knead the Dough
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a flour dusted potjie, pour over the olive oil and use your fingers to poke dimples all over the dough.
Top with the red onion, dried oregano and maldon sea salt and push more holes with your fingers (so that some of the toppings make their way into the bread)
Place the lid back on the potjie and place in a sunny spot for at least 40 minutes or until the bread has significantly increased in size.
Second Rise
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
Arrange some coals to one side and place a trivet or braai grid on top, place your closed potjie on top and then scoop coals onto the lid.
Take care to have more coals on the lid than beneath the potjie.
If you are using brikettes, work on 7 below and 10 on the lid.
Bake
Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp on top.

Beautififul reflections perfect tranquility, all so beautiful and yum that bread!!! Thank you once again for sharing all that beauty with us. Loved it !!😍😍😍😍😍
Thank you for your lovely feedback, so happy that you enjoyed travelling with us. 😉
Your focaccia from the field kitchen looks just great.
Thanks Barbara, was a little sunburned on top, next time, less coals on top. But it was delicious. 🤤
Trying to figure out where exactly Mbudi is located. Been to Mogotlho near Mababe, travelled via Khwai and Moremi Game Reserve to Maun. The serene environment out there is ideal for couples looking for a romantic getaway.
Here are some directions from Khwai Village to Mbudi and on to Magotho (Khwai Community Trust) on the Khwai River. I hope this is useful. maps.app.goo.gl/cqbfmvipLLc92Lyp9?g_st=ic
@SoulTonicLife Thank you. I have an idea now.
Nice episode, How's the road From Polentswa to the Kaa gate and how many KM..?
The road from Polentswa is a gravel road that is sandy in places mixed with corrugations until you turn off north onto a two spoor. Mostly soft sand, no problem with correct tyre pressure in 4x4. The scenery was beautiful similar to the road to Mabuasehube just less traveled @ExpeditionBotswana maps.app.goo.gl/VVHtU5fkP2mBCEUq9?g_st=ic
@@SoulTonicLife Thank you so much, I'm considering doing two rivers to Kaa gate next year. This is after seeing the series.
@@ExpeditionBotswana Great! Our experience on the Botswana side of Kglagadi Transfrontier Park was next level. If you are set up for wild camping it is overall a much better experience. The unfenced Camps are private and a much more immersive experience with the Kalahari and its wildness. Enjoy!

Very beautiful place Third bridge. We stayed there in 2023 n we used the same chalet for accommodation. Cooking outside was wow. We had a regular hyena visitor every evening for the three nights we were there. Thanks for sharing your trip with us. Thebe in Gaborone.
Thanks Thebe, for your lovely comment, must say we really enjoyed the tented camp, regular camping was full, so rather than miss 3rd bridge we stayed there and had an amazing time.
Lovely episode guys....need to travel. The bush is calling!
Ahh the bush is always whispering in our ears, any excuse to go. Glad you enjoyed the episode 😉

Always great to see you both. Wonderful commentary and scripting. In May 2024, we went to Khwai and Moremi, a self drive adventure. Thank you for sharing a journey.
Thanks for the lovely comment. We must have just missed you, but I have no doubt that you had a great time, 2 of our favourite places.
Absolutely beautiful

How long is the bread baking time? I'm hungry now. Will we see the full recipe in Episode 4?
Yes, the full recipe is in Ep:4 this was just me trying out Barbara’s recipe. Very easy and super successful. 👌
I'll get you othersie! BUT I WILL! The naratting is tops maybe not my spelling! I'm spotting the morning person and then the obvious not so morning person still in need of coffee! This is simply stunning!!! Okavaga Delta Moreme, love the wonders around the water hole! Ecquisite Wattled Crane! Little decks surround is wonderous!!!! Fourth bridge--- dont even Know if I'l lmeet you other side .Once again thank you for sharing this beauty with us!❤❤❤❤❤
🤣🤣no idea who you are referring to, with regards to the morning and non-morning person 🤣 we know you would love Moremi, it really is an Eden. Something for the bucket list 😉
Enjoying all your Botswana episodes very much!! Met you in Moremi in may this year and already looking forward to go back to Botswana one day. How are you doing in South Africa? Already making plans for Angola? Kind regards, Julien & Michelle (Netherlands)
Hello Julien and Michelle, so nice to hear from you, how can we forget you after a lovely evening chatting. Hope the ER hasn’t been to hectic! Yup, Botswana is amazing, so much to explore, happy you are enjoying our episodes. Yup the plan is to go to Angola next year, you thinking of heading up as well 😉
The ER has been rather hectic lately but that makes you dream of some new adventures in the bush to find that true “soul tonic”! Although your gin tonic was also lovely under the moremi stars 😊 Are you planning to go up to Angola in a group or do you think it is safe enough to go with one car? Angola is definately on the bucket list, but with the building of our house it will probably be 2026. Hope to meet you again in the bush for a nice chatty catty evening! Kind regards, Julien&Michelle
@julienvanoosten5177 nothing like the bite of reality to make one dream of wild and wonderful places, where the modern world doesn’t intrude. We are quite happy adventuring on our own, but not adverse to “good company”. Your plates sound full at the moment, building a home is a major job,!a journey of another kind. Wishing you both a lovely festive season and warm wishes.
@@SoulTonicLife Hopefully one day we meet again in a remote place under the stars!! There is much to explore, also thinking about the Liuwa plains in Zambia. We wish you both a very good festive season and we definately keep in touch! If you ever visit the Netherlands (although it would not know why hahah) feel free to contact us, you are more than welcome. Kind regards, Julien&Michelle
Right back at you two as well, if you in Cape Town or we meet in the bush, would be lovely to enjoy a fire and a blanket of stars. The world is a small place and there is much to discover. 👍🏼😉😘
Fabulous locations and filming , 😊thanks for sharing, from Steve near Chester England 🏴 where the Roman's once lived.
Welcome back Steve, where the Roman’s once lived, nice to have you back 👌
You have just sent me barrelling back a million years , I knew Veronica when she was first out in maun do trees with shell .. wow that’s a few years ago
Oh wow, what a coincidence. She sounds like an interesting character. What we can comment on, is that she chose a beautiful location to set up camp. 👍🏼
For those who want to know - Veronica Roodt was a prominent conservationist, researcher, and author who spent over three decades living and working in Botswana’s Moremi Game Reserve. Originally from South Africa, she devoted her life to studying the flora, fauna, and ecology of the Okavango Delta. Roodt was deeply involved in nature conservation, contributing significantly to Botswana’s tourism industry through her research and publications, which became essential resources for safari guides and wildlife enthusiasts. Her works include detailed maps and guidebooks such as The Shell Tourist Map of Moremi Game Reserve, and educational books like Grasses and Grazers of Botswana and Trees and Shrubs of the Okavango Delta: Medicinal Uses and Nutritional Value. These publications highlight her expertise in local ecosystems and the relationships between plants, animals, and humans. Roodt lived alone in a remote bush camp within Moremi, where she conducted her research and wrote extensively. Her life in the wild embodied her passion for conservation and her dedication to preserving the unique environment of the Delta. She passed away in 2022 at the age of 65, at her camp, surrounded by the landscape she cherished .

Totally on another level, I have no doubt you will have an amazing time. Where are you heading to?

As always epic content and wow Nxai Pan out of this world. Drone footage next level. Thanks for sharing your journey
Hey Shaun, as always thanks for your lovely feedback. We really had an incredible time at Nxai pan.
❤👌
Hi I think your vidios are great. 1 thing I ask you NOT to do is fly your drone in a national park.it is not allowed and no right and you can not get a permit do do so.if you do it encourages others to do the same in other wild life parks.it scares animails Just a heads up in Botswana they will lock you up when they catch you flyng a drone in most places. Safe travels
Have you guys thought of doing Gonarezhou in Zimbabwe?
Yes Zimbabwe is definitely on our adventure radar. 👍
Thank you for sharing this great adventure! After your wonderful video Baines Baobab an Nxai Pan is now definitely on my bucket list

What cool feedback, thank you ☺️ Lots of nice things coming up 👍🏼
Ha. I once met an elephant at pretty much that exact spot. He didn't move aside for me though. Had to reverse all the way back to reception 😂
🤣🤣and that is a fair drive backwards! He was clearly considering whether he wanted to fill my frame a little bit more, or not. Maybe he was enjoying testing Andy’s reversing skills 🤦🏻♀️ was it with the trailer or without?
@SoulTonicLife thankfully it was before we got the trailer 😂

Great one guys. Loving it a lot 🙏
Thank Q! We really had a good time as well, what with dangerous trees snatching the drone, tree climbing escapades and very, up close and personal interactions with the elephant. 🐘 good fun all round.
Thanks for your videos once again! Still enjoying your travels. We were in Nxai Pans earlier this year and had similar experiences with the Elephants at camp 1. I sat in my chair until he stood 2 metres away and stood and stared at me. My bravery then quickly dissipated, and I slowly retreated into our Bush Lapa. They not quite as relaxed as in Mana Pools
So pleased to hear that you are enjoying our videos. It was our first stay at Nxai Pans and we really enjoyed ourselves. The game spotting was great and the elephant interaction, quite something. Must say when they are that close, the already taller than normal ellies seem even taller and quite imposing. But the whole vibe was very relaxed and quite special. Mana pools is definitely on our bucket list, but the camping fees seem inordinately high 😳
