You can probably add padding/plastic so that 95% of parts are fine, but now you have to have some system in place to inspect 100% of parts, because you don't know which 5% are damaged. With a robot, you can get near 100% up time, and near 100% process reliability, which is more important than seconds per part. For the average shop? 100% pad the shit out of your parts catcher and send it.

Fanucs have interference zones which prevents robot from collision with obstacles such as these mentioned by you. I programmed once an ABB robot to place 2x1m panel on a jig, passing a pillar with 5mm clearance at speed 800 mm/s.
