    Those who really want to use the clip for "education purposes" should be aware that I was under sag, with rider sag at about 44% instead of 30%. (I've since replaced the spring on the rear shock with a stiffer one.) If you've heard the latest Adventure Rider Radio podcast with Chris Birch talking about setting up your suspension for balance (front to back), you'll know that the front end was light and likely contributed to it sliding out. Yes, I was probably going too fast for a downhill muddy section too, no doubt. I was also riding too close to the edge in an effort to avoid the deep gravel that builds up in the middle. Live and learn.

    I hate the stock seat too. It forces me forward into the tank like he pointed out. Smashing my junk😅. I put a stadium sest cushion in the dip, wrapped it with medical ankle wrap stuff to keep it in place. Then made a cloth sleeve to cover it. Works, cost $5.

      Rest assured I don't look through it but sit high enough on the bike to look over the top of it. The wind management on the Tiger is pretty good but at highway speeds I get buffeting right on my helmet. The wind deflector actually makes a big difference.

    Awesome video going over what you've done. Im considering either an f650gs or klr650 for my first street legal bike ive ever owned since im coming from dirt bikes. Pros of the gs seem to be better on the road, lower cg, better protected gas tank, lower seat height which ive found in my experience on my previous bike to be helpful since it allows you to penguin the bike over extremely rough terrian with your feet down, slipping the clutch. Pros of the klr are higher ground clearance, about 1.5 inches more suspension travel, bulletproof engine after doohickey and thermobob are done, and far more aftermarket and oem part support, cons of the gs being its a bmw so proprietary parts and tools = $$$ and possibly less reliability, cons of the klr being worse on road, more buzzy, less horsepower. Honestly there so close i think ill buy whatever pops up first in my price range

    • @650thumper
      @650thumper ปีที่แล้ว

      Seriously, if you're interested in doing off-roading, go with the KLR. I rode my friend's through some gnarly terrain recently and was shocked at how well it works in the dirt. Clearance and suspension are surprisingly good on that inexpensive bike. The GS is good for light off-roading but clearance is an issue once you get into rocks. You are right though that the GS is far superior on the road. So although they are quite similar in displacement, the GS and KLR are worlds apart, in my opinion, in application.

    • @MotoCocoTV

      @650thumper ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I sold it after my cross-Canada tour. It was great, but I wanted something better for those long distance tours. The big thumper is not the most comfortable bike for 120+ km/hr. Best for secondary highways.

    • @650thumper
      @650thumper ปีที่แล้ว

      Never had any issues with the regulator, although I know it's an issue on some bikes. It gets plenty of airflow but I think other 650 models/years have it tucked further back, and I have heard of some relocating it. I guess it's a compromise between protecting it and giving it airflow, as you say.

      The fork protectors are by the same company that manufactured my aftermarket shock, Stadium Suspensions. www.stadiumsuspension.com/. However, you can also get other protectors by Kriega and Moose at the major distributors like Revzilla and Fort Nine.

    Late to this vid. Enjoyed it. I am on my second 2007 black F650GS totalling about 100K km. It looks like you have a taller seat of which I am slightly envious. I too am 5' 8" but even so, find my knees bent too much and I wish I had more leg extension for long rides (over 6 hrs/day) . All 4 BMWs I have owned were subject to cross winds but I do like the upright position for visibility. I like that you suggest 4600 is a good efficient RPM, I come from longer stroke big singles and tend to short shift and cruise at 4000 RPM but everyone says "Wring 'em out!" so I will. That oil consumption is surprising to me. Best regards,

    • @650thumper
      @650thumper 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, when I did the Seat Concepts upgrade, I had them blow foam at the Dakar height. As you probably know, the Dakar model of this bike has a slightly taller seat height.

  • @650thumper
    @650thumper 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Anti-Gravity battery didn't work well in this bike. The thermal sensor in that unit was tipping in 32-33 degree heat and shutting down the battery. It's a good battery but just not for this bike that has so much heat in the air-box. I've got an AGM battery in there now and will probably go back to the Shorai when they are back in stock.

    • @kovrcek
      @kovrcek 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      On dakar I have Motobatt (sorry but don't know the type) - these should be the best I think in terms of heat resistance, so maybe look into that. But I have it only for like a year at most and few thousand kms (bought the bike last year). I will also use some wooden planks + special heat reflecting tape - it's like 5mm thick and I used it to protect my bags on Yami R1 from the exhaust. It was super close to the bags, not the gases but the metal itself and it helped a lot.

    • @650thumper
      @650thumper 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good ideas. I know some guys is Oz who have Shorai and no problems with them in extreme heat. I think it had something to do specifically with the Restart circuitry in the AG batteries. Shorai's are back ordered but the glas matt is working fine for now.

    Hi Kevin, thanks for the info. Picked one of these up earlier this year and am starting the customization process. You gave lots of good inspiration! Question: With you mudguard comment take it you do two up on the bike? Did you change the shock weight any? I've been taking my girlfriend on back, but I feel like it's riding too low in the suspension. (Even with preload adjusted)

    • @650thumper
      @650thumper 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, my wife and I just finished a tour with her on the back. You just have to crank up the preload. I also upgraded the shock because it was a little undersprung when the bike is fully loaded. You might be able to get away with just changing the spring. My shock had 90K on it so I decided to change the whole thing. You can hear about it in my other video on mods for off-road. Enjoy the bike!

    Kevin, thanks for the video and your insights....I've picked up several ideas! I've a new owner of a 03 Dakar and so far liking it a lot. It looks like you have a tank bag (based on the straps I'm seeing in this and your "dirt" video). Do you mind me asking which one you use and how well you like it?

    • @650thumper
      @650thumper 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Neale. The bag is the Wolfman Expedition. It's discontinued now, but they probably have a similar one. Wolfman upgraded all their bags to a waterproof fabric recently. Just be sure to keep the attaching straps long so they buckle over the top of the middle panel and stay out of the neck/yoke. Otherwise you might crack your plastics. There isn't much room around the triple-T when the bike is on full lock. Also, when the bag is off, I pull the buckles to lengthen the strap so the buckles can drop well down the front. Again, before I did this I cracked the middle plastic when they got crossways. Let me know if I haven't been clear and I'll take another run ate explaining. Enjoy the bike. The Dakar is a fun bike and better for off-roading than the standard GS.
