Montage M: Shortcut for Assigning Controllers - Clutch for Programmers!!!
In this Montage MX video we will talk about and demonstrate the ability to assign the many control sources to modulation settings on a wide variety of parameters within the montage m. This video demonstrates a great built in feature that allows quick access to assigning parameters to the onboard modulation controls.
These concepts can also be applied to the first gen Montage, and the mod x series of keyboards.
If you want to customize the parameters that are affected when you change controllers like the mod wheel, the ribbon controller, or even aftertouch, THEN YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY WATCH THIS VIDEO!

The motif Es have best piano samples ever
Oh really ... ?
@@JuliusDeBerryJryes or no?
@SamoDrajf what makes you say that?
We still use samples of motifs in our music because no keyboard can still make a sound interesting
Which sample is that exactly from motif?
You are correct w the action but, 61 key? 73 is a bit more money, but much much better for solo, riffing etc.... Only my opinion folks....
I mentioned this in a comment on my Instagram channel, but you are definitely correct. But I think overall the tradeoff for many is not worth the extra cost and transport weight.... That's probably the reason that 7 versions of keyboards are significantly more rare than the 6. They sell a lot less I'm sure.
Hi Julian. Can you tell me how you turn off the loop function. I've found that I can't turn off the yellow button in some tracks using my finger. Thank you.
You have to do the sequencer first. You can't shirt the state of the square indicator while the sequencer is playing. Let me know if that solves the problem.
12:48 ABS stands for Audio Beat Sync, it's the function that kind of "guess" the tempo based on the AD input
Thanks for the info! And thanks for watching! I'm working on a followup video for the sequencer.
nice, just found this channel. I recently purchased the mk2, now I'm trying to wrap my head around it. nice vids
Check my Instagram. Korg has posted some other quick reels that I made about this board. You can find me @majesticstudios_jld. Are there any specific topics that you are looking to learn about or need help with?
Same with the juno ds-61 which I love. Gives you layering but also a split in a sense.
Lots of cool things you can do with layering and splitting!
@ let me clarify i mean when I use midi to control it. But yeah i love the roland layer and split I wish just sometimes it could be an all in one like yamahas especially when shifting octaves (have to do each individually).
Big facts
Definitely!
thank you.. 🎹
Glad it helped !!! I have some more clips from this video coming soon!
@@JuliusDeBerryJr yes indeed bro... I'm locked in.. taking piano classes in coillege next semester .. was debating between 61 and 88 key for studying the craft ..
Kory definitely paid attention to the details of every instrument! 💪🏾😊
Def!
This was a great video, but what I wish I could find is a video comparing a bunch of different controller options that work well with the Nautilus.
What other functions do you need?
@@JuliusDeBerryJr I'm not an experienced synth guy so I don't know what all the possibilities are. Nano/Nano2 obviously get you faders which is cool. What about maybe drum pads? (etc)
@johnnyvlee yep. That one is called the nano pad. It has 8 pads. You can use them for mainly programming drums. (If you would prefer pads to keys)
Oh Lord, can we please clone you so we can keep little Julius DeBerrys in our pockets when trying to figure out our Nautili! You are a legend!
I really really appreciate the kind words. Lol let Korg know! 🫣🫣😆😆😆. But hey ... I got something in the works that may be the next best thing to having me in your back pocket. Lol
Do you know if the Korg Nautilus also transmits on multiple midi channels at once? Or is it similar to how the Fantom works?
It can table on multiple at once. So can the faction though I believe.
Tight work !!! ..... Cant wait 2 see next modwave tut
Check out my Instagram. Korg has posted a few of mine. They are all reels (so under 90 seconds). My longer form videos will be here on TH-cam.
Question for ya Brudda…I recently got a silverface Goliath….everything works fine routing wise, etc…BUHHHHHT…no matter what I do, I’m getting no signal on line in when checking meter views…I have switched ch. to line in, and yes, I tried using TRS instead of XLR…just want to bypass preamps. Drivin me NucKinFutZ
Hi. The line inputs (1-16) go in through the DB25 inputs. The combo jacks on the back go in through the preamps. And you just select mic or line level in the system. That should solve your problem. Let me know if you have other questions. Thanks
@ damn man…THANK YOU…I’m a total newbie….I been lookin everywhere…got lost in the non searchable manual…lol…kind of deceiving with the mic/line labels….I swore I saw a vid where he used outboard gear, and came back in with a TRS/XLR adapter….maybe different version….either way…thanks again…I’ll grab a db25 cable…been wanting ta get one anyway. Yeah that's wild! Are you here local? I'm glad you found it! And I hope it's helpful. I'm curious. How'd you end up coming across it?
@@JuliusDeBerryJr I searched up nlr tutorials and there where like two but they were mid and like 3 years old. I swear yours is exactly to the T what I was looking for. Underrated
@CalebHouse-x3q thanks! I appreciate it! Share it! Thanks again! I can do more if you are into stuff like that. I give piano lessons and stuff virtually and in person. But I can do the video for sure!
This is like playing back an old DVD on a fancy 4K OLED television. They are the same samples, of course they will sound the same. Why not compare it to the new '4K' samples?
Thanks for watching and for your comment. But the purpose was to allow people who already own the ES (or older Yamaha keyboards) a chance to hear the sounds they use on a regular basis on the new board. ... Possibly saving themselves time and money. (Since they will most likely still use those same sounds on the new board). Also same samples don't automatically mean the will sound the exact same. Very similar but difference in converters and even the engine's processing of the samples could make things change a bit. FWIW, Comparing them to different high def samples wouldn't be an apples to apples comparison at all, (which was the purpose).
@@JuliusDeBerryJr Why upgrade at great expense to sound exactly the same? I'm an old Motif guy - I get the nostalgia aspect - but I would rarely use those old samples on a gig now. Time marches on
@AynsleyGreen did you watch the beginning of the video? (The intro)... Or did you scroll through? I spoke about why I picked the specific sounds that I selected for this video.
@@JuliusDeBerryJr I understand that they're still a thing in the Gospel realm, I just don't get why - since I've seen church cats running Mainstage with all the new blockbuster samples, too?
@AynsleyGreen yeah definitely. It's weird. It's like they are staples for a reason and people just seem to always come back to them! Some of it may be comfortability and some of it may be easy. But guys still do it for sure.
I can't seem to get the compressor to work properly..? Turn the knob (with a mike application) and it doesn't sound like anything is happening ? Tried editing the parameters.. nothing seem to be happening ? Suggestions anyone ?
I'm sorry, but I don't have the console in my possession anymore. So it's kinda hard for me to walk you through it step by step. I have one at one of my churches though. I'll check Sunday. Do you have it engaged? (Turned on)
@@JuliusDeBerryJr I think so..? On the fare top left it says ON..? But can't seem to find a way to select that..? How do you select that to say off or On ?
Also, can you tell me if the compressor works at the output of the board or on the input gain..?
@richardlacombe1736 not sure I've seen that happen before.
Great thanks. I need to repair the key velocity of one key so I was not sure how to open it on XF6 ... Thanks, helps a lot.
Hey man this is awesome coming straight out of the box! I have been on the fence as the Korg Nautilus seems to be a bit complex to manage/navigate… However, I’ve got a few questions… Do you have any customized sounds for piano? And if so, are we able to purchase them is it easy to get your custom sounds if you have any on a Nautilus board? And also, I’m into R&B music like 90/s etc. Would you recommend 73 or 88 keys for this style when it comes to the Nautilus? Thanks appreciate your time!

This video made me very glad to have found and bought a used Motif Rack ES for $330. It's due to arrive today! Yippee!
Nice price! After tax and shipping? Where did you find that deal? Great job!
Roland is (in)famous for dropping features on newer keyboards. I believe the G was the last to have RPS and audio tracks synchronized to the sequencer. Regarding the Yamaha Motif/Montage, their arpeggio system is crazy good, especially for people with minimal keyboard skills. It's like an arranger keyboard with very non-cheesy phrases.
Yeah rps is gone but they have pattern based launching now.... So it's very similar in nature. 💪🏾
@@JuliusDeBerryJr Thanks, I didn't know that. Are you able to launch a pattern or group of patterns from the MIDI keyboard? Also, I'd love to know any tips you may have for simulating linear sequencing using the pattern sequencer in the Fantom. I'm fine with 64 measures in each pattern, but I'd like to be able to move/copy/duplicate MIDI data. I'm a big fan of the Roland sounds. I think the Fantom 06 is tremendous for its sounds, but for my limited skills, I'm leaning toward a used FA-06 for its sequencer, but I know I would regret not having the virtual analog capabilities of the Fantom.
@jbognap yeah I need to get some videos up about the fantom sequencer.
Roland is missing an opportunity - put in the linear sequencer of the G or the FA and there’d be moving a lot more units.
Maybe. But you can use the pattern based in the same way.... At least slightly. Crazy that people are missing out on such a great keyboard in today's day... Because of not having a linear sequencer.
@@JuliusDeBerryJr The frustrating thing is that Roland has all this intellectual property in their back pocket. The other simple would have been to make its USB audio/class compliant, so you could use an iPad to handle sequencer duties, which is what they've done with the new Juno D6.
@jbognap what you you mean....? About the iPad part?
Hey, we connected early on in Montage M ownership. It’s been hard for folks to understand the Mod Matrix is implemented on the Montage M. It is powerful. I can say that it has taken me 10+ months to be comfortable to understand, navigate and implement changes but I love it. My M8x is a powerful beast. Keep the video coming for those that are struggling with the short German Yamaha videos.
Yeah it takes time to really grasp the mod matrix. But I'm glad you're digging in and getting familiar with it. Are there any specific topics that you'd like to see videos on?
You mentioned you used your iPad at church every Sunday. What kinda apps do you use? I’ve been using my iPad for Mksensation and Ravenscroft for years now.
Used to be garageband. Now it's only logic. And I use it for loops. I want to use midi instruments from logic but it doesn't work sometimes. One of the churches I play for has a Hammond organ that has midi in and out. So I midi it to modules etc. I wanted to use logic on iPad so I didn't have to bring modules each week. ...but it doesn't trigger. So right now, logic is only for loops.
Nice alternative and option.
Definitely!!! 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
Holy coooow😅
Lol. What?
I’m just going to stick with my ES8 due to the fact it’s way more warmer for me. I have the original Montage 7 and my ES8 at church I prefer using my ES8 over the Montage as my mains
Do you prefer it because of the sound of it or the keys? Most people aren't going to use a 7 at church for mains.
But they boot their PCs for 15seconds, then need to click icon for a DAW and wait another half minute to load, aaaaaaaaand every single yime you load VST or multisample instrukent you wait!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂facts!!! Yeah this ain't that long ... I mean in a live environment.. yes. But just get there early enough to turn on the keyboard. Lol
always informational!!
Thanks bro! Share the info!
@@JuliusDeBerryJr for sure!!
The best compromise is the 76 AfterTouch Keys, less hard to use the aftertouch than the 88Keys, but have place to fun with this size.(Best for speed solos).
Why not just the 6. Less heavy and also smaller footprint.
I came to watch your setup, proceeds to watch you struggle to unwrap a hitch for your truck . . . lol Well, you haven't lost me yet but I'm really anxious to see the setup . . . lol
what I need to know: I'm setting up to record Gospel music, never done it before, I have a Yamaha mixer and a killer computer system, a Roland Keyboard Amp, several guitar amps to choose from (I started in guitar) I need to be able to record everything myself, Roland JD-Xi arranger, ten channel Yamaha Mixer. I love the Cathedral Quartet and have always loved quartet music, my goal is to record a ton of hymns with a group yet to be created. I have a lead vocalist available on the female side, I have 4 octaves I can cover most male parts myself, My natural range is the Tim Foust range, but Tim has a falsetto I'm completely jealous of lol . . .
I documented the entire process. The hitch was part of that. Sorry. 😆
I'm not sure of what your question is. Can you reword it? I do have experience with live recordings. The setup for this recording was quite a bit more complex than what you mentioned but it may still help.
@@JuliusDeBerryJr I know, that was actually epic that you included that part of the story, because you never think of those things do I need a hitch? well if I need a trailer I need a hitch, it's great, don't let my comment be misunderstood it was abslolutely in appreciation of learning the hitch is part of the whole process . . .
@douglasdobson8110 lol!! Oh ok. Thanks. Yeah I did read it wrong. I read it like (I came to see your gear and I ended up watching you connect a hitch) 😂😂😂
Hey there, Julius! I go straight for 76. I don't know what's wrong with me😂
I had a Roland Fantom G7. Great board. Feel like if you don't need weights, the 6 is the best spot. But some folks need that extra octave of keys.... So 🤷🏾♂️. Yeah!
When I think sequencer, I think of something like the Yamaha motif or RS 7000. As in one through 16 buttons, track one drums ,track two bass, track three keyboard, and so on with the ability to arrange those loops into sections like intro verse chorus . Modern Day equipment seems to have regressed compared to older equipment, which clearly stated that you could create an entire song with one device. 🤔
Same ability here on this board. Easy

Your videos are very helpful! Thanks for the efforts! I'm having a problem with the following setup: I created a split of a piano (right hand), and soft strings (left hand). I want the soft string to hold whatever chords I play, so I thought the best way to achieve this setup is by setting an ARP with "chord hold", and apply on the strings timber. However, this doesn't really work as I expected. Is this the right approach?
I don't understand what you mean by "hold whatever chord you play"
I have them both sound wise Yamaha montage shine even just the 1st gen..
