Big Dungeness Crab Caught with a Balloon???

I've been playing around with stuffing a balloon with squid. The idea is that they can't pull out your bait too easily and the scent doesn't wash away as quickly. Also, if they are trying to get the bait, they will have a more difficult time and stick around the snare longer. Just an idea.

Caught three on this day. Two keepers and my first was over 7". I stuffed a balloon with squid and poked some holes in it. My theory is that it makes it harder for the crab to steal your bait and the scent is dispersed at a slower rate making the scent last longer. Just a theory!

January 31, 2022 First time taking our Jeeps out to Frank Raines OHV Park. Great scenery and would highly recommend checking it out. The area is still recovering from a fire that scorched the area in August 2020.

First day of crab snaring. Great weather, small surf, and uncrowded. I like to feel for the crab bite instead of random pulls after a soak. When you run braided line, the vibrations from the snare can be felt very easily and you can often feel the bite. I didn't do much editing, but I hope you enjoy the highlights.

I do the same thing but with biodegradable teabags. No need to poke holes in them. Probably easier to stuff with bait too.

Will they lose interest and leave if they can’t even get a piece of squid? What we do is even stuffed the top of snares to keep them longer. We normally limited out with this trick.
I have no idea, but they still can get to the squid. They're crafty creatures.

About how far are casting out, I'm a 63yr old man with a bad back and shoulder, I do use a 13 ft diawa beefstick with a penn battle ll, but have had no luck yet. I can throw a 100-150ft and I dont think that that is far enough. If anyone can give some advice that would be great thanks

How heavy was your snare?
Honestly don't know, but I added a 1 oz pyramid to it. I go as light as possible. Usually the current moves the snare around a little, so you know you have a crab attached if it doesn't move at all.

If I'm not mistaken that's the hammond mine, next time you go take a look at the federal claim tag up top the entrance and see if you can get the claim #. It was primarily a silica mine.
