The most serious threat to our nest to date. A woodpecker follows our female blue tit home then tries to smash its way into the box.

Our blue tits deliver their first egg this morning at around 5.38am.

Captured on the morning that our three blue tit chicks left the nest, this video shows the comings and goings of the parents to the bird box to look after their brood, bringing in food in different guises and removing faecal sacs (poo). They day has arrived for our young blue tits to take that enormous leap out into the world outside the bird box. At just after 12.30 the parents visit the nest with food, which seems to spur on the largest chick. woodpeckers are cool and all, but the way they try and break into other birds nests is nasty our new nestboxes all have metal doors now at this point might cover the entire damn thing in metal...

Yep. Woodpeckers are known to eat the chicks of other birds. Be it natural nest holes or nestboxes. This is why you see nestboxes with metal at the entrance. So that the woodpecker cannot widen the entrance and get in. I think I can see the metal here too, so the chicks are safe.
Unfortunately yes. That’s also why the nest box has to be deep enough so that they can’t just reach in.

One wonders what they think, if they think at all. One moment four wooden walls, then grass, trees, sky, must be amazing.

Wonder how many in and outs to build a nest.
Good question! A blue tit nest is built over a period of time, maybe a couple of weeks or so. At the peak of nest building this year there were over 150 visits to the nest box in just one day.
That is an impressive video. Wonder how much turbulence that caused in that confined space.

how terrifying is that. imagine someone knockalockin on your house and you're inside just sitting with the knowledge that they'd eat you if they got in.

Blue t** are predatory birds themselves. They have a long list of food items, if you know what I mean.

Hi Terry, thank you for your question. The box is substantially made of solid wood with a metal plate on the outside around the entrance hole. The nest box is also quite deep, so as you can see the woodpecker wasn't able to reach the chicks with his beak to pull them out. At the end of the day Mother Nature will rule, but we have done what we can to protect the chicks and provide them with an environment which is as safe as we can possibly provide.
There are tubes / hole protectors specifically for avoiding this

Do you do anything to the spinach first?
Yes, I blanch the spinach first before putting it in the tank.
I have 4 in a 90 gallon, down from nine. I sure do like them and wish I could breed some. I also have mollies and angels in the same tank, with plants and CO2. I have a hospital tank if I ever come across any fry, but I think my angels would eat them if I don't notice them soon enough.
Angel fish are beautiful but, being part of the cichlid family, can be a little aggressive. I'd be a little wary of keeping my otos in the same tank.

So I’ve done cucumbers but I have no idea how long I should keep them in the tank…?
I generally leave if it in for a few hours - certainly remove it by the following day.
@@ral-tv The cucumber slices float for an hour or two before sinking. Will the otos eat any leafy green? Basil? Do you blanch/boil the cucumbers?
