Hello! Join me as I add depth and shadow to an oil pastel painting. I often employ a technique known as sgraffito, which involves removing pigment to reveal underlying layers. In this video I also use a small amount of Galkyd in one area to lift color, which is an orderless paint thinner for oil paint. To smudge the blue and black oil pastels I chose, I used make up applicators, and small inexpensive brushes. I've used thin steel rulers to help bring perspective to buildings, streets.
Before this video, I applied a wash of Golden Acrylic Paint in three colors. Next, I used rich, soft Sennelier Oil Pastels to introduce abstract shapes. For finer details, I utilized Faber-Castell Creative Studio Oil Pastel Crayons, known for their harder consistency compared to Sennelier Oil Pastels. Afterward, I added light-colored oil pastels to achieve a painterly look and again scraped away areas to continue developing the image.
I'm working on an 11 x 14 sheet of Canson XL paper designed for both acrylic and oil mediums. The paper I'm using is durable and resistant, but it has limits to how many layers it can handle. I hope to finish before I create holes in the paper. Next step will be adding more saturated color and highlights, and additional definition.
