This monoband QRP radio is a kit by W8DIZ, and is a real joy to assemble and use on the air. Mine is for 40m, but you have a choice of bands when ordering. It is a fun build, and even funner to operate.

10GHz and Up Contest 2024, August Weekend
มุมมอง 2728 วันที่ผ่านมา
For the August weekend of the 10GHz and Up contest I drove up Mt Vaca (SOTA W6/NC-151). It was a slow start, but I made about a dozen contacts around California. And the weather was much nicer than last year, where I baked in the sun. White Mountains SOTA Adventure Day 3
มุมมอง 36หลายเดือนก่อน
Rex (KE6MT), Saurabh (N6RUN), and I (AA6XA) made a long weekend peakbagging trip to the White Mountains. The main goal was White Mountain Peak, a 14er, but there are a lot of other peaks to get in that area. Another early morning start. As the sun rose we climbed Sheep Mountain. It was chilly but beautiful. Once we were done activating, we broke down camp and drove up the road to Campito Mounta...

Rex (KE6MT), Saurabh (N6RUN), and I (AA6XA) made a long weekend peakbagging trip to the White Mountains. The main goal was White Mountain Peak, a 14er, but there are a lot of other peaks to get in that area. At dawn we mounted our bikes and started up the trail. The first part was quite steep, so after some walking, we resumed biking. This continued all the way to the summit, which was excellen...

The main goal was White Mountain Peak, a 14er, but there are a lot of other peaks to get in that area. We left the Bay Area Thursday after work, and drove to Lookout Mountain (W6/ND-037) near Mammoth Lakes. After spending the night on top and doing and activation, we drove to Bishop then up ...
Quansheng UV-K5: Making QSOs
มุมมอง 68หลายเดือนก่อน
I took my UV-K5 up to Mt Allison (W6/NC-180) for the CQ VHF contest to see how it'd do. I was not disappointed. The contest wasn't super busy, but I still made 2m contacts (quantacts?) with all three modes (FM, SSB, CW). Here are some clips of those QSOs so you can get an idea what the radio can do. The Quansheng UV-K5 is the new hot HT, and for a good reason. With a different firmware load (uv...

What a great adventure!
It was. I need a winning lottery ticket so I can do stuff like that full time 😂
Now that's what I'm talking about 💪🤠
Fun goes up as frequency goes up
Looks like you all had a blast!
Nice shot
1 bravo lax?
ARRL Field Day exchange: I had 1 transmitter, class B, in the LA section
Way cool! I had no idea that these could do SSB and CW; I'm headed to flash my unit now!
They're pretty fun with the new firmware. My new favorite HT
It's just a woolly bear caterpillar :)
so fuzzy
This is one of the best series I've seen on any transceiver kit anywhere online!!! Going through the whole series is exponentially more educational than just building a kit all at once without really understanding what the modules of the circuit are doing! GLORIOUS!!!
Glad you found it helpful!
That board sure looks a lot more packed as you approach the end of the build! I feel like my hands are way too big when I look at that board. Great job assembling in the order you did, I think most people put the smaller, lower components on first, then build up to the taller/bigger components, but then they never know where they went wrong! Your system is smarter!
I'm pretty sure, if you build in this order, you can test everything with nothing more than a multimeter. And if you're buying very cheap kits, you probably don't have a lot of test equipment. But that shouldn't stop anyone from getting in on the fun!
DL2MAN does some toroid builds where he walks you through the math first, so you can understand the ratio you are looking for, but it looks like you solved it too by deciphering the really cryptic paper they send out with these. It's like you are a detective in both the electronics, and in the translation from Chinese!
If you need to do toroid math: toroids.info
Your approach of building one function of the board at a time is a very smart one! Usually I just build the whole board at once, and then when something goes wrong I have no idea where things went bad. I've got to start doing all builds in this way!!!
I stole the idea from someone else :D It does make it easier to troubleshoot if you know when it stopped working.
Your breakout tour of the functions of each module of the diagram is FANTASTIC help in understanding radio theory!!! GLORIOUS!!!

Oh my goodness moo shoo moo shoo shoo shoo powk!
Thank you for sharing! Did you have to make backups of the HTs calibration files first for re-upload after the firmware flash?
I didn't. Changing the firmware didn't seem to affect the memories and stuff like that, which surprised me.
Very good overview. I have been looking for an inexpensive HT that can send APRS to be used when I am activating out of cell range, but (hopefully) within digipeater range.
Thanks! Its definitely the cheapest HT I've seen that can transmit APRS, at least if you put on the uvk5cec firmware. I've never tried APRS spotting for SOTA/POTA, but its on my list now!
@@hambitious Just got one for $19 on Prime Day, and a cable for $5. Is there an easy way to restore the factory FW after flashing a different FW?
I'm sure its available somewhere, but I have no intention of putting the original back on, so you'd have to look for it. Once you have the file you should be able to just flash it like the better ones.
Dude just chillin. Doesn't even mind the humans.
This is really interesting. Keep up the work. I was looking for some information on the transverter you have there, but didn't find anything.
I have the DEMI transverter www.downeastmicrowave.com/product-p/10368-144.htm
what radio are you using for 6meter
KX3 for 6m, and IF for 222 and 432. 817 for 2m and IF for 902 and 1296. HTs for 2/1.25/.70 FM. This video (th-cam.com/video/ys1drqUqITY/w-d-xo.html) I explain the setup around 1:40
Nice setup, is that the 6m extended double zepp a la K6ARK?
It is a 6m EDZ. And a 2m one vertical on the same pole.
I am curious/confused about the inductance calculations that you used to determine the number of turns on each toroid. For example, for the 10m filter you are using 9 turns (.26 uh) on L11 and 6 turns (.10 uh) on L12 however the diagram from DL2MAN that you referenced at 14:47 indicates 5 and 4 turns, respectively. Can you please clarify for me? 73, NR3S. P.s. I have a pre-built Lo-band unit and have ordered a Hi-band RF board kit to build.
I don't remember, its been too long since I did them.
Nicely done Jeff, I think that this may be my next activation, be on the lookout for the complete.
I don't have an antenna up at home, so hopefully we can get a summit-to-summit!
Its a wooly bear they are safe to touch❤
Wait it's a blackbird

Being Part 1 it would have been great if you described where you got the components.
Hawaii + cats = heaven
Yes
Doggo 😊❤
Have you thought about adding a keyer? Very cool little kits
I have not. I don't use them enough for it to be worth it. And I have an old PicoKeyer in an altoids tin somewhere...
Sooo cool and cute 🥰💤💤💤❤
Thanks for the video ❤
Lovely flowers❤
🎉
I love dogs❤
Beautiful spot. You'll be back!
Hopefully when there's a bit less snow!
Hazys are the best!

blue bird?
Looks like it
Looks slippery
It wasn't as bad as I feared it could be. I didn't need my micro spikes at all.
