Living with the Subaru WRX STI // The Perfect Dad Car Family Hauler?
#subaruwrx #asmrdriving
Welcome back to another Subaru WRX STI video. Today I'm sharing my thoughts and experience of using this rally bred performance sedan as an actual family car. Do I need to sell this for a Hyundai Sante Fe? If you're in a similar family man situation like myself, everyone will try convincing you to sell the thing for a Honda Odessey. Do you give up your identity and "grow up"? Or can you live best of all worlds. Let me explain in this new video, hope you enjoy!

#370z #NissanZ #nismo370z Hello guys, been a while since the last upload. Wife and I just had a baby. Anyways, I wanted to share this perspective and potentially help someone who is in this very specific situation. Do you buy the New Nissan Z at $50,000 MSRP or are you better off getting the old Nismo 370z for roughly $35,000. Or what other options would you get in general at those prices? 350h...

Hands down the coolest looking car!!!💪🏿😤
😍😍😍
Congratulation for this analysis and return of experience. It is exactly the same questions and answers I make... and end up 4 years ago with a Honda S2000 2004 AP1 F20C Phase 2 (in Europe we have the AP1 2.0l , red ligne 9000 rpm with the AP2 body) in mint condition and 75 K km (now 98 K km) and I am still on the honeymoon with it.
I had the same thought when I got my ‘19 Nismo. I love having an N/A and unsure if I want to boost. Almost full bolt on and I like to keep it looking stock. Updated the screen to give me CarPlay while maintaining the OEM look. And a white Nismo is a perfect flamboyant JDM car. Maybe in 5 year I might consider it, or even go the other way and try to get a 300Z.
it’s nice to see I wasn’t to only one debating these things haha. I gotta ask how you were able to fit CarPlay into the OEM infotainment? Also white was my dream spec for these, shows off all of the nismo accents. Curious too to see if more people get into the new Z platform when prices become more realistic. Thanks for the input 👌🏼
@@onsite_nate Nifty City/Aucar/or whatever brand all sell a similar product. Same company that makes the popular “Tesla” screen. They also make one that updates the Z tech package unit to include car play and turn into a functional computer. I got the HD screen update and it really modernizes the interior. That current screen in the resolution looks like it’s from the early 2000s lol.
Nice video. You made a lot of good points. I personally think that if your primary goal is to have fun, you can't go wrong with either option. However, the S2K can be also considered an investment, but like you said, the ND Miata has more "livable power" which is something to really consider as well. The sketch factor of older cars is also a good point. It seems so much easier to go with the ND Miata for peace of mind, modern amenities/safety features, ect. Although, just as you pointed out, the S2000 has that rarity factor that turns heads, but paying the price of a new sports car for something that old is conflicting (although the nicer S2000s are going to continue increasing in value).
man, my entire video summed up right here 🙏🏼 definitely big things to consider. Can’t go wrong with either, just depends what your risk tolerance is and what the car is intended for. Glad you caught all of the points! Thanks for watching sir
new sub. good video 🫡
thanks for the support! working on some more interesting topics, hopefully new video soon
I've had 4 Miata's and 2 S2000 and trust me the S2000 is so much more than what a Miata offers.
love to hear this 🙏🏼 thanks man. So far I’m still so stoked with my choice
370z❤💥👍
I’m 61 years old and enjoy the shit out of my stock 2020 STI. I will keep it stock as long as I own it. It’s fast enough for going from point A to point B. I drive it 90% of the time in Sport Plus with a rear wheel bias and Track Mode on and Traction Control off. This car really shines when it’s pouring rain here in Houston. I would mess with rear wheel drive cars with much more HP when it’s raining and they realize really quick that they cannot mess with an STI when the weather is less than ideal.
Heck yeah 💪🏼 I’m on the same page as you. Car is plenty of fun for me stock, and plus I have a lot less worry with an aftermarket warranty slapped on. Vegas rains heavily as well, which is perfect for boost and that AWD really being put to use. Can’t have the same fun in my Z otherwise I’ll spin into a semi
What exhaust do you have on there?
just OEM 🥲 lifelong debate whether I change it because it’s pretty quiet but most of the time I like it
@@onsite_nate yeah I think keep it because it’s quiet enough for the family.
planning on getting a Subaru WRX STI but I do not know which year model to get the 2018 or the 2019 model as my first car. been always my dream car to own but searching through most of it have been junked up with mods.
yeah anything 18+ is pretty solid. I think 19 or 20 they strengthened the motor with the type RA bottom end, hopefully bulletproof 🤷🏻♂️ in general finding one that isn’t beat to crap is the most ideal but it is getting tough
@onsite_nate interesting, the 19 model got some changes on the piston forgot what subi did to 19-21 model. But it is true finding a decent used one that aren't abused before being swapped to dealerships are one hard thing to find, hopefully I'll manage to find out that suits my all the checked mark or I may ended up going for the 2022 VB
Thank you for posting this mayne! I am on the fence between a 2019 STI or a 2021 acura integra manual tranny and a-spec w/tech pkg. Integra has 100 hp less than the sti, and the sti having hydraulic steering is a deal maker for me.
man I knew there were people cross shopping between the two 🤠 I’ve been needing to make a video on this. I personally think the STI will hold value better compared to the base integra, also if you live in crummy climates you’ll have more fun and safety in the Subaru finding a well-kept STI will be more difficult as time goes compared to the integra also
@@onsite_nate I hope to get an sti soon, in the next year for sure! I see some for 30k miles for under $29k. Not bad (i'm looking all across the US). In Texas they are 30-34k usually, even the 2019 models
If it’s not a daily, and you plan on keeping the car stock, the s2000 is by far the better choice over the entire ND family. This is assuming you’re finding a decent condition s2000 where the paint and interior still look somewhat fresh. If it’s a daily, and you’re sub 6 foot, I gotta go ND2/3. It’s so good at handling it’s not even funny; then you got some solid modern tech in there. If you plan on modding, then I’m not your guy lol
summed up my entire video here heck yeah 🙏🏼 modding isn’t my thing anymore either. money pit and always leaves you wanting more. that’s just my experience 💀
Is this a stock exhaust? What exhaust
AWE touring or track. Few people in the comments asked this answer should be there 👌🏼
absolutely agree, we grew up idolizing the 350s in movies and games! Going into buying a car tho all the 350s are high mileage or customized heavily. I loved the 370 and couldn’t wait to get one with low mileage and stock, definitely a car I’m keeping for life😍 almost everytime I’m out I’ll get someone complimenting the car which is a great feeling too, good choice on the nismo!
nice man! Isn’t it such a cool feeling to finally get your dream car and still be happy with it yours onward. hoping for more smiles and trouble free miles 👌🏼
I've had a 2021 STI for the past year. It's my daily, but i like taking it to same backroads and gravel tracks for some fun. Besides a singular oil leak at my turbo return drain pipe, it has been absolutely perfect. It does everything I need it to while also being an absolute joy to drive.
I actually had that same oil leak I believe, and got my turbo replaced under warranty. This a common thing? Or just Subaru things 😂 nonetheless I love this thing and still watch reviews
I’m torn between getting a nismo or a sport tech I’m only 18 so idk which way I should go abt picking one
best way to go about this is find the best spec at whatever your budget is. If it’s a nismo with 150k miles 6 owners but affordable, idk could be rough 💀 you’ll have more fun on the road than in the garage
U should get a pedal commander u will love it especially for the at. Makes it a lot more fun. I have roar pedal
dang really? you have it on your Z?
this over a Miata any day
heck yeah. a new miata though without any reliability concerns also sounds nice but these things will always be classic
I’m struggling with the same decision….For me I think the final straw is the inability to mod the new z. The exhaust is almost impossible to change which is a must considering it sounds like an EV and not a sports car. 370z will be my choice
dang they make it hard changing the exhausts on them? I can only imagine you’d have more aftermarket support in 5yrs and the Z cars itself will be a better deal. good choice nonetheless im all for it 👌🏼
I have a 2018 370z nismo tech white with the red accent trim.. Automatic I love this car because it's true power it doesn't have a turbo I didn't like the super because it had a BMW motor the new z car turn me off with the twin turbo
nice! don’t let people bully you for it being an auto 😂 personally I believe it brings out most of its naturally aspirated high revving power
Music name?
sorry it’s going to be hard to find this. it’s one of the many songs I saved from artlist
Two things are keeping my WR X. from being a dad car, no rear, AC and no remote start so I can cool the car off in these brutal Louisiana Summers before I put my toddler into a 120° car
this is actually huge and why I considered a Tesla Y or some 3row with these features. luckily we have a garage but otherwise when out I have to manually cool the interior before getting in. pretty big inconvenience
@@onsite_nate from my garage it’s fine. IE: we went to the zoo in June and the car was blistering when we got back. I might trade my VB in for a turbo outback
it’s already a dads car, it’s got four doors.
some cars like the Lexus IS has pretty cramped rear space, so could be a struggle fitting rear facing seats in it
This is a power point presentation for his wifes parents on why he gets to keep the car, hahahah
you’re not entirely wrong 😅
The 370Z is absolutely the better car.
am biased but agreed. new Z car didn’t give me that drive to someday own it, great car nonetheless
This is how I plan on having the best of both worlds when the time comes. I hope to find a partner as understanding as everyone's in the comments. I think an unmentioned but nice and still fun family car would be the 2009-2020 Lancer Ralliart Sportsback if you are looking for a bit more room in the trunk. Same Engine as the Evo X in a different cast with the Evo 9 AWD system. Or another family car for an enthusiast would be the Infinity Q50, 4 door on the VR30DETT engine. Both are Auto, but still fun cars with the ability to perform.
ultimately that’s probably the most important factor and I’m just so lucky my wife supports my obsession haha. Performance sedans in general seem solid as a family hauler, why does everyone decide they have to be boring cars 🤷🏻♂️ then again, most people aren’t into cars so it’s fair
I have 2018 4runner and the space in the wrx VA and VB is bigger for car seats than the 4runner. I have a 3yr old but we’ve had the 4runner since she was 1. Thought about it in depth and was in the market for one but finding the right financial options for them used sucked especially with miles. My wife has a Kia Telluride and thats like a mini van basically.
nice man, kinda figured most SUVs out don’t offer that much width space compared to these. and yeah, finding a low mileage, OEM and decent valued STI seems more difficult as time passes. For sure they’re out there though, hoping one day you find one that’s just right for you guys cause I love these things
Another great vid! Congrats to you and your wife
thank you sir 🤠
I'm currently driving around a VA STI and NC MX5, and have been eyeing a Civic Type R or Yaris GR (I live in Australia, the closest thing to you would be the Corolla GR), what do you think of the Corolla GR chassis/motor?
I may be biased. But go for the Type R!
Don’t have much experience of either tbh, but from what I hear there’s been more reliability scares for the GRC when tracking it compared to the CTR. But for street driving, and you’d benefit from that AWD I’d say GRC
@@onsite_nate Thinking the same! Or maybe I should just bite the bullet and get the s2k. Your content makes me itch for it everytime I see it ahaha
When me and my wife played to start a family, we welcomed our daughter by buying a brand new 2018 WRX STI. She is 6 now, and it's still our family car. One of the best family cars for us car enthusiasts. The only other ones I'd ever consider would be a Civic Type R or Mitsubishi Evolution.
jeez that’s pretty awesome haha. also so cool that the car has taken care of your family for the last 6 years. hope to have ours with my family as long as you had yours 🙏🏼 thanks for sharing
NEVER sell your cars for SUVs. Wifey wants all your cars home. 😤❤️
I have a 2018 honda sport hatchback 6mt. I always tell my wife if we need to upgrade to a bigger vehicle I will sell my car for extra cash. She always tell me no since I won't ever find one with a manual transmission anymore. But we made it work and a got a kia telluride. Those are fun to drive also.
Nice you ended up keeping the 6mt?? You’re wife is cool as hell haha, glad us car people found partners who understand our passion 💪🏼 And tellurides are great, I love the space and looks. Was comparing that to the palisade/Santa fe
@onsite_nate yes, I still have it. She is somewhat a car girl herself too. I learned to drive manual from her haha 😄
Yay first comment. Awesome video. Can you do a video on how you wash your cars video.
ill look into this 👍🏼 thanks for the suggestion and I’m glad you enjoyed !
I agree with you man.. this is a great car all the way around! Yours is very nice btw. previously had a 2010 370 base 6MT and i modified and tuned it.
thank you sir 🙏🏼 glad you enjoy these as much as I do, such gems
Yeah, the 370Z Nismo is such a great car. I will crack my neck hard when I see one.
who needs a chiropractor 💪🏼
I have the same car but white and I love ❤️ it best driver car ever I have a sport exhaust and stock standard and the car is super fast stock standard it would give me bike a run for its money
love these nismos in white, such a solid choice. what exhaust did you end up going with?
going to look at a 20k mile 2017 370z nismo looks identical to yours but 6 speed it was the car that i saw in person and made me like cars been my dream car ever since,
heck yeah man good luck! hoping that everything checks out when you see it 🙏🏼 let us know how it goes
I’m at the point of my ownership where it would make more sense for me to build the motor vs buying a new car. I’m at 155K on my 2011 (owned since 2013) and it still works fine. it’s survived many hot track days, embarrassed E92s and kept up with 1st gen GT4s. Most of the problems with the car have been permanently fixed by the aftermarket, so that’s a plus. at 50K, it was going to be an Integra Type S or CTR, but i can’t justify spending that much on a car, I actually had a WRX for a while, but i sold it because it was kinda wasteful having a second car with 4 doors and i never used the back seats. It was also pretty unrewarding to drive. So I’m going bikes instead haha.
dang that’s really cool to see you enjoyed the life outta this car and it’s still pushing 💪🏼 these VQs are something else. 50k is the new 35k nowadays it’s so terrible. Hard for me to consider buying new cars as well. I’ve always wanted a bike but my wife is convinced I’d die so we compromised with s2000 haha. Thanks for the feedback man
@@onsite_nate That's a pretty good compromise!
I'm twenty four, and i'm about to buy an isma but if they change the front on the nude Nismo I might just save my money because I'll have around 25 to 30K. Around spring to summertime and that's when I'm thinking of getting the car. I don't know if I want a 2018 or a 2020, but in my area, they're around like 25 grand to Twenty grand. If they just change the new Nismo, I'm my. Just save up. Because I'll have like close to forty k by the end of next year, so I might just get that, but yeah, you know, honesty, I just don't like the look of it of the new one at least
Nice man, older V1 Nismos are even better valued imo, manual only and has a more tuner look. Probably stiffer but overall same great car. Good luck!
Thanks for the review and great job. Since you came from a base 370Z, are there any suspensions mods you can recommend for street driving? My budget is $25K so that puts me out of the Nismo range. The new Z is nice, but not worth the dealer mark ups.
Ah man I’m afraid I can’t answer this one, I kept my base Z entirely stock. For street driving I felt it was pretty solid, good balance between GT/sports car. Definitely worth trying out for yourself 👌🏼 maybe able to find some answers on the Z forums. good luck on your search
Thanks. That Nismo exhaust sounds nice. If I do get one, I’ll probably get that exhaust.
Great quality intro! Good content - subscribed! Hope to see the channel grow. Good luck.
Thank you good sir 👍🏼 appreciate the support wish me luck!
i just bought a 2018 Nismo Tech with 20k miles for 33k, did I do alright?
For sure
heck yeah man. what a steal 💪🏼 auto or manual? Manuals generally cost more
@@onsite_nate it’s an auto because I really wanted a nice daily
Just got my first this week. It's the perma-smile that gets me!
nice man congrats! I’m almost a year in and that feeling hasn’t changed 💪🏼
Been driving my 2004 STi for the past 15 years. No cons at all...Its an amazing car
love it. glad all the internet scares about the EJs spontaneously bursting aren’t true for everyone 🙏🏼
I'm glad you're keeping it the way it is. This car is perfection as is & will take care of you as long as you take care of it. The Z is a car that makes you excited to get up & drive it every day.
heck yeah man, these things are just so cool to own. just love how it looks and drives from factory
Thank you for this video. The practical side of me leans toward the ND due it's pricing and the fear of parts scarcity with the s2k. The ND being common is actually a strength for long-term ownership, but I have nostalgia for my turboed '95 R package, not the ND. I've owned a S/C s2000 CR in my youth also and numerous jdm/Honda cars inbetween. The cinematography and the driving vibes from this video really captures the spirit of the s2k for me. I've been debating this choice for well over a year as to which forever car I'll own. I've exhausted all my sources for opinions, but this video tipped me to the s2k, especially when you pointed out how "excited you get" when you look at it. I don't think I've ever used that perspective before for my decision making and I think it's enough to make me stick with team Honda. Hope to see more stuff from you dude!
thank you for this feedback I’m so glad it resonated well with you! honestly just wanted to share a more philosophical side of owning these things rather than how I think it handles on track.. which I don’t do but neither does a vast majority haha. I’m really happy to help. good look on your search, the right example will definitely present itself and you’ll love it. thanks for watching 🙏🏼

im glad i kept my 09 z as a toy since new and had other cars for daily driving. its almost 2025 and i only have 35k on the odo. love the Z but the engine of the new Z is tempting me.
wow that thing is mint! definitely never seen a takeover haha. hopefully my previous Z is being taken care of as well. and yeah small part of me will always be curious on owning the new Z
The car looks great, I am planning on getting one of these as a daily driver, but I would have to choose a 6 speed manual, drive safe.
nice man, good choice and can’t go wrong with the manual 💪🏼 definitely will hold its value in the long term since being the last manual nismo for now. at least the last NA 6spd nismo
