    Was there on the same day - didn't see you or would have said hello. Agree with all your comments about the quality of the trees in the exhibition. Whilst the largest examples and ones in the demo were amazing, it allowed me to realise i'm drawn to the smaller examples also. Can see what people say about hoarding but guess we beginners also need material to practice on? Anyway, nice quick review, cheers once again!

    Another great tour, thank you Scott. It was a very big show with so many quality trees. I always reflect on the time spent growing and resources needed for such expensive show trees. It will always be out of reach for myself and my small windy garden would not be the best enviroment for such an investment. It does however make me feel very grateful for the small little trees I have grown myself and my future plans and the day to day pleasure Bonsai brings to me. I always enjoy hearing others thoughts and experiences as bonsai is so much more than just growing a tree in a pot. Take care.

    Great video, I liked that. Chris seems like a really great mate. It was good to meet him within your video, he has a great presence. How do Herons compare with Greenwood's? Did you prefer one over the other? I went to Herons once, in October 2022, on the way back from Germany home to west Wales. I didn't expect to buy a tree, but come away with an interesting trident maple. It was in a 5L pot in black compost, branches were dying, It needed some serious tlc. It was used for airlayering. But the stand out element was the base of the trunk, its really impressive for a smallish tree. If Peter was there I'm sure he would have charged me a lot more than the £20 a staff member charged me for it!! Over the winter another branch died off, but in february 2023 I took the chance and bear rooted it into a bigger pot with a freedraining medium and since it has put on some amazing growth. I'd love to send you a photo of it. I'll try and find you on facebook. I subscribed today. Yeah nice one 🙂 I look forward to more videos 🙏

    Great video. IMO you don't have to spend huge amounts of money to get into bonsai. If you have an old garden hedge, dig a bush up and start training it or air layer a few branches off it or buy garden centre shrubs. Don't spend too much time looking at mature specimens that are too expensive. You will lose trees and make mistakes. The enjoyment is in the process not the ownership of expensive trees. Get hold of lots of material and start developing them and learn as you go. Learn to take cuttings and air layerings. That's my advice. I started over about forty years ago and have never bought an expensive tree but I now have trees that are well developed and looking really convincing, and I have tons of material that I have been developing over the years.

    Hoped to see your mate Chris do a regain over the pond. 🙂 Time is a major factor with bonsai. I am developing olive and spruce trees I ground-planted over 40 years back. At age 64 now if I want my 'ideal' mature bonsai maple tree I'll have to pay for it.

      I've been doing bonsai for a couple decades plus. It took a long time before I bought my first tree that cost hundreds. Pots as well. A good pot can easily cost well into the hundred's. But I haven't killed a tree in a long time. I wouldn't be concerned about killing an expensive tree now. Likewise I don't watch TV much anymore and the art of bonsai fills that empty spot. So how much is the tree worth in terms of entertainment. Does it captivate your imagination and stir emotions? Then what does your budget allow for? I don't have money for a four figure bonsai just like I don't have Ferrari money either. But I am able to collect decent material from the wild. And I have trees that I started 20+ years ago that represent bonsai well. Clearly Heron's has been around a long time and the longevity speaks towards successful price points that appeal to a wide range of budgets even if I never get to purchase a tree from them.

    • @gixxermaan
      @gixxermaan 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@dk2614 yea some trees are worth four figures but I personally like to find good material in nurseries/garden centres. I've found some great mature plants that are cheap compared to the starter material. Just have to be selective and eventually you see great plants with potential to become great bonsai.

    A lovely view of some fantastic trees, thankyou 💚 very expensive though hey! I have a bit of feed back id like to give, the monologue at the end, even though you raised some good, reflective points for all of us to reflect on, felt too long and slow which can cause the attention of the watcher to wane. It would be better to keep them shorter and sharper highlighting the main points. To reflect on one thing you said though, at the begining you were highly energised arriving at this fantastic place, full of promising intention to surely come away with a great tree, but after trudging around in the rain for hours and coming away with nothing, i know is deflaiting. Its all part of the journey hey 🙂 on the other hand, It can be too easy to buy material that after when we come home and our over enthusiasm calms down, we feel, perhaps we shouldnt have bought that tree, its not right for me just now. Its good to be decerning as you were, you knew what you were looking for, for where you are on your bonsai journey. I hope this is well received, all the best to you🙏

  • @XaviersBonsaiRetreat

    Interesting tree Scott. I would be inclined to work this one as a semi-cascade and that last upward branch could be style as the apical region? One of those lower branches probably needs to be removed. OR you put some heavy duty wire on the main trunk and straighten that long branch as the new leader for an informal upright? Always tough to give advice when you can't see the tree up close :)

    • @ScottMatthewsBonsai
      @ScottMatthewsBonsai 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @XaviersBonsaiRetreat semi cascade is what, when I look at the tree calls out to me, it seems we'll prepared to naturally lead into that style. There's been a LOT of interesting thoughts shared on here which are good for me to try and conceptualise.
