      Humans have been smoking for a million years. Most smokers still live until basically life expectancy. I think comments like this are just pointless, you could say the same about alcohol (arguably more poisonous than smoking), a lot of our food (obesity/related issues kill more than smoking), a lot of pharma, and yet these are still all trillion dollar industries not going away any time soon unless humans wake up tomorrow as a different species with completely different behavior. (No I dont own BTI nor smoke) People cite the decline of Cigs, which is true. And yet everyone from the age of like 15 and up even in the West are still using Chews, zyn, cigars, vapes, etc.

So I am massively impressed! Also so glad you have a new video out! Found you during my BAT research phase due to the huge Reynolds write-down and as much as I liked the quality of your videos as much was I disappointed there were only so few of them with years in between postings. Maybe the Production Inside the Same Factory of "Suicide Squad" Ciggarette that is Same Design(Box), is the Story different or hidden - "there is very few ciggs.", even cant plant as "ruling movement" exist maybe will be speaking about fairness(even if not their country - from jealousy). This is like a lie, investment to cigg. Companies like not needed and owner will maybe like to be owner Alone unless a new brand new fertilizers right becomes new taste? Like 2 companies i ever idea to try make a new tobacco taste about smoothness - chocolate tobacco and dunhill maybe. There is a new city "forest city" which looks like will be nice if have a new tobacco also, a new biz place that looks nice to maybe make a new tobacco taste will be nice - because i imagine lighter life like "boating to it"(to have no ruling movement but common sense of normal life again: can ride boats as it is created for sea travelling), maybe they display to other countries that "singapore dislike to use boat"?

    Some interesting points, sounds like a solid business model. ... But that balance sheet really hurts to look at! Net debt equivalent to about 50% of their market cap and 10 years of free cash flow / net earnings. At the very least (as pointed out before) that needs to be accounted for in the fair value calculation and imo makes the current valuation totally unattractive. I would also not underestimate the risk that this causes in a raising interest rate environment ... at the very least this is going to impact profitability when they need to refinance (not sure how much of their debt is due near/mid-term). What puzzled me at first is their equity position. It is strongly negative and comes from their negative retained earnings position which is also growing (higher negative numbers) over time. That should not happen to a profitable company, but the answer lies in their aggressive share buybacks on which they spend more than they earn. In the last 12 months, they spent 500M$ on buybacks (as you said, about 5% of their market cap) plus 150M$ on dividends while having net earnings of 450M$ or free cashflow of 400M$. In the same period their retained earnings changed by -190M$ ... fits together quite "nicely" ... (if you look further back it gets even worse) As solid as the operative business model may be, the capital management looks borderline suicidal to me. I don't regret being their customer, but I wouldn't touch the stock with a ten-foot pole!

    • @ratedaco
      @ratedaco ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment, this is a great analysis! You're completely right, this business model is beautiful but fuelled almost completely by debt. As a wise person once said, it's very easy to grow earnings/stock price with debt when interest rates are at 0%... I have a small position in DPZ but am reconsidering it as interest rates keep rising. Originally my thought was that this was such a strong business that they would be able to repay the debts (and maybe stop using it so much) as money becomes more expensive. Can you really blame a company for using debt as much as possible when interest rates are super low? But you are right in saying that this is unsustainable. Even this past quarter the net debt still increased. Something to think about for sure!

    • @Everest314
      @Everest314 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ratedaco Indeed, you can't blame them for using leverage when debt was cheap ... to a healthy extent. I think they completely overdid it. The are paying an average interest rate of 4%, which I think is not exactly low for pre-2021 standards. So any significant dip in revenue or cost increases could have left them with their pants down. Yes, their business model seems particularly resilient against that, but it is still a risk and all good things eventually come to an end. How they still think it is a good idea to continue like that under current circumstances is beyond my understanding. I would definitely have reconsidered at least the buybacks.
