I think a rocketeer would have been useful on this mission. I hate the pure rocketeer build, build I'm really liking the pure overwatch build. It is a useful frontline soldier who also brings up to 3 rockets for missions like this one.
For me, I feel that rocketeer is like a nuke button for those bullet hell games. They have the potential to just kill a pod by themselves, but other than that, they kinda just steadied around and that's it. I always go pure rocketeer, since if I need someone to shoot, I just bring a good shooter. How's the pure overwatch build treating you? My fear would be "Rocket off course".
The greater the sacrifice, the greater the eventual victory. *Except where Evangelical Preacher-types are concerned lol.
Every troop's death pains me, but this is long war.
I'm a big sissy - I play impossible bronzeman and if a soldier dies I restart the mission. In current campaign I've only had to restart twice and I'm almost done with month three.
@@corbanbenthannon2081 There is no reason to play on ironman if you don't enjoy doing it. Bronzeman is also a very good option. I think the LW team gave us a lot of options so that every player can find a setting that works for him or her and just have fun with the game.
@@corbanbenthannon2081Yeah nah it was going to be a faux Kong Qiu thing but then I got distracted thinking about those American Private Jet Preachers.. Don't ask. Just as viable an option, 'checkpoint Charlie'. It's our individual entertainment choice. I can go that route if it changes the story but if it's just gameplay consequences then I won't turn up the difficulty until I'm prepared to accept the dice rolls. However, I may have originally started to play Tarkov to help get over my anxiety. I should be in therapy, I smoke copious amounts of weed - that is to say, I make bad choices and then seek out the consequences. I don't recommend it lol more trying to lessen the emotional blow for the poor fella. Kinda made me think of an old XCom2 playthrough I have somewhere - "Washed in the blood of the lamb" - a Wasteland 3 tribute playthrough that involved sacrificing the highest ranked soldier on every mission. Fair play for going 3 months in and only having the odd redo - considering the length of some of those runs and a couple of the early events, that's bloody good going.
Team selection can be a 2 second thing or it can be a 20 minute thing. Love the micro prep we can do..
Later in the game, the setup might become more standardized, unless something "interesting" happens, that is.

Your March was as successful as it could be, accept for missing out on 1 scout and the landed large. You are doing very well!
Thank you :D The 1 missed scout actually is quite huge, considering I could have sent another 3-4 rookies for promotion. But one just can't have everything.
The choice between Sapper and Smoke Bomb at lance corporal Engineers is tough. I feel sapper is mandatory early on, but falls off heavily later in the campaign. In my current run I have decided to completely ignore Sapper and to use exclusively support grenade Repair Engineers. I'm in early May and it is still fine. We'll see how it goes.
Sapper feels very OP in the early game, not just for the cover destruction (which is huge, troops can't shoot through cover early game), but also the plus one damage, combined with AP is especially good against mission that you expect would encounter chrysalids. Later you can always convert them to Shogun so it's fine. :)

Oh no... I only learnt from yt videos. I am no where close to some of the more prominent figures or veterans in playing Long war. I know the basics, and considering this is my 1st I/I campaign, I expect to run into trouble, or even a game over screen.

'is this going to blow up the computer?' .. Whenever I set up a chain sequence in XCom - 'is this going to blow up my computer?'
Got a new laptop (yes I do my recordings on a laptop lol) and I think while it is more powerful than the older machine, it's a little unstable. It had gone through multiple bios updates already and the occasional sudden turn off seems to have gone away, but the machine isn't performing so well. I am a little worried. All I can do is to keep my drivers update but that's about it.
Did you get a new setup or is it just that I been watching the older series? lol.. Sounds good - majority use some over-equalised bass heavy headsets anyway but it sounds good on a regular hi-fi setup, even with the sub. turned off.
I moved to a new place and it's more wood walls then before, if that makes sense. I think my voice is a little screechy so I also fiddled a little on the equalisers so as not to grind on everyone's ears :D
Long episodes or full streams are great for binge watching but as I understand it, it doesn't help Google's engagement numbers if we don't finish an episode in one sitting. At least we've all gotten better with synchronizing the sound over longer videos these days. The 30-90 minute swing of XCom is so much more fun when I can see the episode length ahead - it's a killer for those 'I'll just play 20minutes' moments when the game decides you're gonna be busy for an hour and a half now..
It's a little bit of struggle for me. I really want to keep the spirit of long play so I have minimal editing unless there are some problems. It is bad for engagements yes, the retention looks pretty bad. But I try not to just play the yt games but really to preserve something that some of us love so much. Also, it is a bit awkward when I am setting up the team or just doing base management. Those are the "boring bits". But without those, the game is just action drama for a thousand hours, which doesn't make much sense. Again, it is really hard to keep a balance.

@@Pr0digalKnight I've been playing on and off, and mostly on LW version, I think for a couple years. Never on I/I though. No spoilers, but I gotta tell you, I ran into a LOT of problems.
@@brianl2play I played the first xcom 10 years ago i think and the dlc and the xcom2 that came after. they were all awesome games! this game has loads of problems and that is what makes it great

Shivs are great to fill in whole on missions and to baby sit rookies. Glad to see them I try to get 5 total 3 normal 1 Alloy and 1 of the flight ones
That's something I am definitely keeping in mind. Alloy shiv is a bit expensive. The hover one though, is it worth it? I mean by then the barracks should look pretty great and you can just rain death from above with flight armor plus squadsight strike rifles and LMGs.
@@brianl2play If your strat requires heavy amounts of meld you can use them to buzz around the map fast to grab it all. They are just faster than any other unit that can fly that you have

It's just such a great game. It never gets old.
In my current Impossible / Bronzeman campaign I also failed to shoot down all 3 scouts in March. Very frustrating.
Think some people did the math that aggressive avalanche on March has a pretty good chance, like 6x% to shoot down a scout in 1 interception. I think Xwynn made a spreadsheet calculating the chance of your interceptors against ufos at various stages of the game.
@@brianl2play I always go aggressive with avalanche missiles in March. And I use the "escape trick" and I still missed one scout completely. I missed the first one as well, but at least it spawned a fighter, which I did shoot down. Air game is brutal. But I love Long War 1.0!

Very gutsy to take on a crashed scout with rookies only on I/I! Watching you pick your squad I just remembered why I always play with Strict Screening second wave option turned on.😂
Rookies only is hard but manageable. At least I get to pick who to go and set up their equipment accordingly. Nothing a few AP grenade can't fix, at least for the 1st month in game. When you can also bring flash and smoke for subduing the outsider, it can't really go THAT wrong. And I needed the material. I know that people love Strict Screening. For me, it really is just more flavorful and gives me a little more to think about.

Just out of curiosity, how did your brawler do throughout this playthrough?
Sadly, the brawler didn't really perform for me. I thought that with the extra movement speed from the quirk the brawler could close distance and since she uses melee that hit chance wouldn't be a problem. So wrong. She closed distance like once in my whole playthrough and the misses are just bad. I know that with the lv10 brawler perk the 100% chance to crit means it would never be a problem, but by that time, my team is already melting enemies from a billion yards away, safely behind solid cover. Given a chance, I would replace her with an SMG user. From my experience, the SMG actually overperformed for me, mopping up enemies that get too close since no penalty from close distance, and still be able to stay in cover. I think from a theory-craft perspective, the brawler shouldn't be bad since her DPS should be skyhigh. But the fact is, closing distance in this game is dangerous business, and when DPS matters, you don't really want those people to be close to the target since A) ally fire is a problem, B) if the target takes a while to take down, the melee combatant is in serious danger, and C) ammo simply isn't a problem compared to the base game. When compared to other melee weapons, while on paper brawler should do a lot of damage, but in reality, at the start of the 2nd part of the game, you can fight some trash and they drop plasma axe and hammer, which for me is a really huge incentive to go that way instead of brawling. So what ends up happen is while axe and hammer user may not have the high ceiling that brawler possesses, they are being more useful for a lot longer in the game. And one crit from the plasma hammer can usually one-shot the enemy anyway. Not to mention some nice perks from using blade and blunt weapons like +1 armor at close range. So no, from a team building and gaming the system perspective, I would really avoid using melee combatant and especially brawler. If for fun... I would lower the difficulty and play more melees, that way I think you can really enjoy some face melting punch.

which characters do you plan on being in your late game party?
This playthrough would be Takayuki, Ralphy and Pizepi. I don't think I planned this in advance, instead I just try to fit whoever is suitable into the team.

@@leninthebeaniesouhacker.2459 I think the recruit companions are interchangeable. Pizepi is the energy weapon user in my group, taking her out means your GRB would need to be handled by someone else. You can skip energy weapon but for me it is much more enjoyable. Chisel is nice and him + Takayuki means you have a very solid frontline and can carry a lot due to their high strength. Just be sure to have Chisel around a lv10 leadership character since his rogue chance is quite high.

Spoiler alert: No. Unfortunately, the melee combatant of choice for this run is Takayuki. For some reason, I've never brought Chisel with me to the final fight in both playthroughs. Guess I can always make another LP and use both Takayuki and Chisel. I always love them as bodyguards and frontliners.
btw, what's your end game 3 companions and the weapons they'll be using?
I did 2 playthroughs and I believe it's usually a mix of these for me: VC, PSG-1 Chisel, the big plasma hammer Takayuki, the big plasma axe Pizepi, GRB Ralphy, weapon varies depending on setup I think I also have some flex slots for characters like brother Thomas and Corran Cain. btw, here's a tip: you can get a bit of extra money if in character creation you choose any kind of smokable and sell them to the merchant, no consequences, just extra money
Absolutely. I think I just roleplayed a little and didn't set the rangers to smoke since I don't smoke myself. I believe there are certain uses with the cigarette in the highpool storyline as well.

Why don’t you disassemble weapons, in the Rangers’ stronghold you can sell spare parts for good money?
IIRC My thought process is that I want someone to have high weaponsmith so I can get weapon parts instead of junk. Scopes are especially valuable and I usually don't have enough to fit all my weapons with one. I did some farming at the start of game so cash really ain't much of an issue.
I thought you knew, that if you get within a certain distance of the fruit, it will explode, but it won’t infect the ranger. I was surprised when you got hooked and what you spent on deactivating the bullet fruits.
Thanks for sharing! I wasn't aware and simply never experimented with that. With the DC version, ammo became a non issue so I just started shooting them and call it a day.

Definitely agree. Fits the vibe of an apocalyptic world. Do you want this form of anarchy or that form of anarchy? Or are you anarchy itself? Differs from a lot of games that just lets you play the "benevolent" or "lawful good" character. That said, I don't think that I've sent the bomb to the monks for once? So I've never meet Dan.

Thank you for your support! Do feel free to share your build as well! I love to see how others approach character building. This is a game I loved deeply and I am happy to share this with everyone. I think the game is not as challenging enough that the players have only one true path to succeed in the highest difficulty, thus a lot of different builds are possible for completing the game. I see a lot of builds that goes something like 4164841 (iirc) and they all work fine, but I feel that to fully realize their combat potential, maximizing their initiative and thus the double 10 on speed and agility is always the way to go. I somewhat doubt that it leads to a noticeable difference in fights other than some of the harder fights in game, but from a min/max point of view, I think it is for the best.
Finally, I've found good and not outdated guides to this game, watched your previous already Thanks, man My 10th restart is hurting)
