We decided on this outing that we would kayak out to the sugarboat wreck on the Firth of Clyde, then head over to Kilcreggan for a lunch stop off before heading back to Helensburgh.
Kayaking Loch Lomond, 9 mile circuit around the islands.
มุมมอง 2729 หลายเดือนก่อน
We kayaked out to the narrows which is a group of islands in the middle of Loch Lomond. After we explored the islands and searched for the famous wallabies on Inchconnachan, we didn't find any, we headed over to Inchmoan for a spot of lunch.
Kayaking solo on Loch Arklet 07.02.24
มุมมอง 41410 หลายเดือนก่อน
A break in a spell of bad weather we've been having & some holiday time from work, allowed me the opportunity to take the kayak out on a small loch iv had my eye on for some time now. At little over 2 miles from end to end, Loch Arklet is a small loch but the stunning scenery made the trip worth while.

My kayaking buddy Jan and I took the kayaks out on loch lomond on a glorious winters day to explore some islands and check out some old ruined buildings located on one of the islands. We also had a search on Inchconnachan (wallaby island) for the famous loch lomond wallabies.

You can see fishing line to pull the cord thru...my superglue had all gone to glass!
Never thought about fishing line, good call. Ill be sure to try that if and when I need to replace the skeg cord. to be fair, the superglue idea was a bit ropey, worked for me that time but id defo advise against using it unless it is a last resort.
@@jmckayaking7734 First try out of new slider on Saturday in fairly challenging conditions around Portland Bill! the new slider gave much needed control! i have also fitted the mini hatch which I think you have too. Ive not managed to fully tighten the hatch rim having put both rubber O rings above and below. I wonder if this is correct. Thought it might be better with Soudaflex on lower union and O ring above. Wonder how you did yours? ATB HUgh
@@hughmarsden1987 if I remember correctly I put the soudaflex on the bottom and the rubber gasket/o ring on the top side. My hatch is solid. I tightened up the locking ring as tight as I could. It’s not going anywhere.
Thanks for posting this video. I have just carried out the upgrade and it helped me a lot. Hardest thing was getting the yellow cord into the slider! Thanks again.
Glad it helped. The whole point of filming this process was to aid others as i couldnt find much on line to help me. Most of this was trial and error but it paid off for me. One year on and the skeg slider still works perfectly.
Use a vacuum cleaner to suck the new chord through the tube
Was on there last week and the return from Banknock lock 20 was a nightmare...galeforce headwind and rain all the way back. Cos it's a straightish section the waves were crazy...😮. Currently doing the canal in stages in an inflatable tomahawk air-c...👍👍
I love to see restoration videos! Any luck with decals? Did you just go over it with a heat gun to restore the color? I'm looking at restoring a yukon expedition.
Yeh i went over the decals with some kind of waterproof model paint, (black). I also used fine art style paint brushes to apply the paint. they turned out pretty good. I ended up getting more involved with the restoration than the filming so the footage for this kinda fell by the way side im afraid.
@@jmckayaking7734 I was afraid of that. 😂
Thanks for the reply!
Done it from greenock today water camp and weather perfect couldn't have had a better day😎
What models of kayaks are you using ?
In This video i'm using an older kayak, Venture Easky 15. If i'm not mistaken they no longer make this model anymore. My mate is using a P&H Delphin, which is a really good kayak. I have since upgraded to a P&H Leo as my main kayak and use the Easky 15 as my backup kayak.
What a great place to kayak! I would’ve loved to have seen that boat.. water is so calm too
It's a big bit of water out there on the Clyde when you're low down in a kayak!
It is if you think about it but to us its not much different from the forth around Inchcolm and Oxcars lighthouse etc. I do like being out in the kayak.
I was a child when it sunk(!) there have been several thoughts about just blowing it up over the years but now; its just a wreck on a sandbank... and hopefully wildlife haven!
It is popular with fishermen, especially people kayak fishing, so there most be plenty of fish life around it, and it does smell.
Great video...as always. Can you tell me where you set out from and circuit time. Cheers 👍👍
We set out from Kidston park in Helensburgh on Rhu road lower, basically right on the sea front heading towards Rhu marina. Its actually next to the marina. Took us under 4 hours. Bear in mind that we were in no rush and kayaking at a leisurely pace. We also stopped off at Kilcreggan to have a lunch break, which was around 30-40 mins. so at a rush pace you could do it in under 3 hours. If you wanted to just visit the sugar boat Then you could be out & back at Helensburgh in about an hour & a half easy.
@@jmckayaking7734 brilliant detail, many thanks. Keep up the great videos. Cheers 👏👍😀
Brilliant. I have the clx Virgo and couldn’t figure out how the top cap came off! Didn’t want to force it and risk damage. 👍
Thanks John, very helpful indeed!
Glad it was helpful
Hi just come across the channel and sub'd. Looking forward to seeing more of your adventures. I have a Perception Triumph 13 that I use for fishing the Lochs. Thanks for sharing.
Brilliant mate
Nice. That must have been a challenging drive out there - were the roads icy? Arklet is a nice wee Loch. Nice video. James
Hi James, No the roads were not icy just a wee dusting of snow which was gone by the time I got off the water. Iv got the mitchellin cross climate 2 all season tyres on the car which give me a bit of security but that road is challenging at best. Its a nice wee loch and another off the tick list.
Great video. Furthest we usually go up that way is loch chon. Never realised arklet was large enough to paddle...👍👍
Yeh Arklet is roughly about the same size as chon. I was only on the water for about an hour and a half not much paddling if you like to cover a good distance. Always fancied exploring Arklet so I had a wee solo day so thought why not.
Lovely paddle in gorgeous surroundings, How are you enjoying the Leo , looking at getting one in the next two months.
Yeh Im really liking the Leo, its a great kayak. I will say that mine is the MV version and is a brill day boat, but for packing up with camping gear you'd struggle to get a lot in it. You would really need to pack the essentials. Would do for 1 or 2 nights away but anything longer then id suggest a kayak with more storage.
Great video mate and good upgrade, I have the P&h virgo and hate the wee ball toggle for the skeg, hopefully this upgrade will fit my virgo
If you have the recess already moulded into the kayak then it should work. You might need to think on your feet and make some improvised minor adjustments as I had to do but other than that I find that the skeg slider upgrade is a game changer.
@@jmckayaking7734 yes I checked my boat when I got home it has the resess bit in it so I'll order the kit, looking forward to it thanks for the video mate 👍
I really hope it works out mate. I kinda took a leap of faith when doing mine as iv never done this before. All had for reference was avideo i found on here from P&H from a few year back. also id recomend using sudoflex to set the skeg box in the recess as thats what P&H use on their boats. @@fergus..
The video I used as reference was actually on the P&H web page when selecting the skeg slider kit there is a link to a video. id suggest watching that. its on a link but its on vemo not here on TH-cam.
@@jmckayaking7734 good man thank you I'll be sure to watch it
Superb compilation of a fun and peaceful day, John! Sometimes, I think our lunch stops can be a bit rushed, and I really enjoyed the time we took to embrace the hammock coffee stop in these stunning surroundings 😊... roll on the next one!
It was a great relaxing paddle Jan. Hammock & coffee stop was brill. I think our surroundings added to it all. I enjoyed editing this video cos most of the audio was just us laughing at daft stuff,
Nice video. I live there now and kayak almost every day. It takes an hour to paddle the length of Loch Voil.
Yeh its a great loch to kayak on. Iv only kayaked there twice so far. I do find parking difficult at loch voil but I do hope to visit there again soon.
hi guys went to ard 2 years ago every tree was heavey infrost on the river section was like a christmas wonderland cracking videos well done
Awesome video and epic music selection 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Brilliant John 👌... a braw day, very well captured. That light, eh?! Amazing 🤩
Awesome paddle matey, pity about the weather but that's the way it goes sometimes. Planning a Kayak trip myself up Loch Lomond, hopefully for next year, and can't wait.
Sometimes the weather being off point can make the day more interesting. Would be awfly boring if it was sunny and flat calm every time. We need to inject some excitement into the mix from time to time.👍👍
If your planning a trip to Lomond next year then let us know if you fancy an outing? Ill show you some cool spots.👍
Fantastic John! 👍
What a great trip.... I love going past Castle Stalker... looks like you had a perfect day out
Honestly, we couldn't have asked for better conditions. It was as close to perfect as we could have hoped for. Beautiful area to explore.
Fantastic footage, great music.
Awesome John 👌 - what a day that was!
Great and exhausting day, paddling towards those never approaching bridges! 😆🥵
I want to join 🏕😇
love the seal , fair play .
Always a good outing on the forth.
Superb footage John! Absolutely amazing wee moments ☺️
Loved watching this trip back, John! What a fun wee bouncy return leg 👌... that location was a good shout of yours - thanks for another great adventure 😀
A wee chuckle watching the deer again.
Wow - that loch looked mirror flat initially - beautiful
Yeh it was mirror flat, sometime I like the water to have a bit of motion to it though. Mirror flat looks nice but not much fun.
Thanks John, great day out with you & ferry kayakers. ☮️&💟
Thinking about taking my canoe along this route in a couple weeks..was there many decent looking wild camping spots on either of the lochs? Also what was parking like
I was back Here at the weekend where we kayaked the whole of loch voil this time and up into loch doine and up the river larig. Video is in the works. parking can be difficult as there is only a few spots on the loch voil road some large passing places etc, but there are 2 or 3 spot where you can park up, mostly towards the upper end of the loch. Plenty of wild camping spots though. id say your spoiled for choice.
@@jmckayaking7734 great mate thanks!! I’ll tune into your video try learn what I can about the location 👍 thanks again
@@jmckayaking7734 got upto the voil yesterday with the canoe done a loop of that & the doin. Camped on a nice wee site on the south side! Was perfect weather too! Will definitely be back 👌
That looks a nice cool relaxing chill out day
Good paddle , nice big playground , all you need is a fishing rod now ..
As much as I enjoy fishing I prefer touring around and exploring in the kayak mate.
People always rage when we fish in the marinas . Good paddle the canal , I like it . Quiet icy too ..
Yeh iv found the boat owners at the marina are rather unwelcoming. there's one guy in particular.
@@jmckayaking7734 they watch like a hawk ..
