Yeah the whole line with “non native/invasive” is really which one can we profit from😂. But in all serious it’s mind boggling how people can go up and down on why we must destroy this invasive but are totally ok with cats/honey bees. Which cause in all honesty more ecological distress then most animals label invasive.

I get tons of these lady bugs in my room. I noticed that letting them congregate in my ceiling corner causes more to gather so i stopped removing them. i think my group of bugs is beautiful ❤️ I have seven of them at a time typically:3 they are cute.. maybe they eat ants ? ants like to drink my soda cans the second i put em down i try to stay clean as possible but I've always got ants cause i like sugary treats! i don't know what the ladybugs eat but if they eat aphids they probably enjoy the ants huh

Listen I don't think any animal is evil, I don't hate the harlequin lady bugs. But oh my god I wish I could include a photo of the absurd number of them that were in my house in September. There was a week where we had to wear shoes inside because it was gross to accidentally step on them with bare feet and impossible to avoid all of them. There were so many on the windows, I could hear them walking on each other. I appreciate this video, it was really easy to watch and I always welcome a reminder to have empathy. But Jesus Christ they don't even make me mad, every year I'm just in utter shock that they can congregate in numbers like that. If the invasion lasted more than a few weeks a year I might have other thoughts.

Who tf thinks that a ladybug bite is worth mentioning as a dangerous trait? Like seriously, was this propaganda written by an aphid? I can not imagine any human actually getting harmed by a ladybug bite. And I was bitten by many bugs (including a giant aggressive caterpillar, centipedes and pretty big spiders) and I did not care about those that much despite being somewhat painful.

I just discovered the channel via this video, and decided to a quick Google search on native ladybugs in the US. The answer to that is the 9-spotted ladybug, which is native to North America and has been seeing a sharp population decline since the 1960s. I'm bringing this up for 2 reasons, the first being your comparison to the Harlequin Ladybug was the 7-spotted Ladybug, and the second is something that I think would have really helped your argument, mentioning the species actually native to the US as a comparison to the two non-native species mentioned in this video could have helped a bit more with the awareness on ladybugs in general and let viewers have a better idea of which species they should probably try to help bring up the population for if they are interested in that sort of project.

Mmm I can see the similar with it between butterflys and moths minus the invasive species part how butterfly’s and moths are basically the same up prevent a few differences like the moth being active in the night and the butterfly being active in the day even though they are basically identical

Hi Roswell, ecologist here! You made a nice video :) I did want to add some thoughts though: These ladybugs have two traits that make them notorious threats: 1) their voraciousness, which you mentioned, (although I'd add that ladybugs are notorious cannibals and will slurp up smaller ladybugs like nobody's business) and 2) Harlequin ladybirds reproduce at an incredibly fast rate. Other ladybugs can easily be outcompeted by the sheer mumber alone. These two things work together to make these a notorious threat for native ladybugs and other ecologically similar bugs. Note however, I am familiar with a setting that may be different to a standard urban American ecosystem. The native ladybugs in my country are really small, lay like 5 eggs in their lifetime, and are often picky when it comes to environmental conditions. Increasing harlequin ladybug populations could easily lead to their extinction in urban areas. We've already seen something similar due to invading Buff-tailed bumblebees. Anyway, I mention this because the alarm I feel about the presence of these bugs is in relation to my fragile ecosystem. Hopefully American ecosystems are more resilient. Either way, I don't think we need to actually start seeing native insect population declines to take action. We already know what this can lead to through similar cases of invasion. I reeeally loved your conclusions and definitely agree, but I very much rather tell people to eliminate non-native species like this one rather than risk it. But yeah I loved it! It's content like this that gets others excited for bugs and ecology ❤

A non-native species outcompeting the native species in it's environment is intrinsically never a good thing unless concretely proven otherwise. We don't know enough about the impacts of the species outside it's native habitat to be making complacent, pointlessly contrarian statements about them. Axyridis doesn't need a woobifying PR makeover.

I'm simply tired of their swarms in my house every winter, filling my floors with disintegrating elytra and my lightbulbs with horrid *tink-tink-tink*ing as they repeatedly hit them. And not to mention their need to drown at least one per day in my fish tanks...
