Lol I think you guys are leaning a little too hard into the "he's drunk" aspect of Hannes. When Adrenaline hits like that, He would have been a lot less drunk as his instincts met adrenaline. The real issue was training. I assume training. They were never trained to actually face titans. Because there was never a need for them to. They weren't scouts. So when it came time to actually face up a titan. Seeing how tall they actually are, how creepy they are up close. Hannes knew he wouldn't make it out of that confrontation. Hence why he said, he didn't have the courage to face the titan. So instead, he was "cowardly". Left Carla to die, and got the kids out. Which... is technically cowardly, but he did also still save the kids. It just took... running away
