Exercise, Sedentary Behaviour, and Cancer Risk: Insights with Dr. Terry Boyle
This week on the podcast Mikki speaks to epidemiologist Dr Terry Boyle about cancer risk and exercise. They discuss the increase in cancer cases worldwide and what might be at the heart of the increasing prevalence. They talk about how exercise can help reduce risk of cancer, but also how it can help an individual throughout their treatment and what the research tells us about its importance. They also discuss sedentary behaviour, what it means to be sedentary and why this increases the risk of cancer in the general population. And much more.

Dr Terry Boyle is an epidemiologist in the Australian Centre for Precision Health at UniSA. He has a broad interest in lifestyle factors and chronic disease, with a focus on the role that physical activity and sedentary behaviour play in cancer risk, cancer survival and cancer survivorship. While he conducts research on a range of cancers, his recent studies have been on haematological cancers such as non-Hodgkin lymphoma.Terry received his PhD from The University of Western Australia in 2012, then received prestigious Fellowships from the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) which gave him the opportunity to spend two years at the BC Cancer Agency and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. He joined UniSA in October 2017, before which he was at the Curtin University School of Public Health in Western Australia.Terry has experience in a range of epidemiological and biostatistical methods, including multiple imputation, meta-analysis, directed acyclic graphs, causal inference methods, assessment of lifestyle-related and occupational exposures and increasing participation in epidemiological studies, and is currently leading several projects involving pooling data from multiple national and international studies. Terry also lectures and consults in biostatistics.

My objection to these drugs is not so much the drug itself, which i realise can have some real benefits, but the aggressive marketing, overprescribing, and lack of support for those taking it. It is now being pushed as a first line treatment for obese children, setting them up for a lifetime of dependence. That's messed up! I also believe that prior to anyone taking the drug, they should have enough information to ensure they understand the need for proper nutritional support and exercise. Subsequently, they need regular medical follow-up and mandatory support in the form of health coaching. If even half the money poured into this drug was spent on improving the food environment, and peoples knowledge about a proper diet (dont get me started on the current dietary guidelines and food pyramid!) then the need for these drugs would be much reduced.

Hi Mikki, Thank you for your work here. I was given a terminal diagnosis from the VA with my Septad / mito-immune disease diagnosis. Living bedbound in a nursing home at 36 y.o.-was very fit and functioning in 2020. Most doctors have no real understanding of or interest in complex illness. I’ve had to turn to better physicians, like Ilene Ruhoy, to get a better chance at survival. Stem cells are my next hope. Thank you again…and I have my story on my second page, The Autonomic Bomb, if you or anyone is curious.

Thank you for this nice profound interview. I´m into the topic for years now and there is still something to learn ;-) There is one point that is not clear for me regarding the third nutritional intervention. The hypothesis so far I understand is: If the adaptation to new conditions is delayed in the late reproductive phase so one should switch gradually to the older "paleo"-diet and give up the recently adapted organic agricultural when your reproductive age starts. So far that´s logical. But regarding antagonistic pleiotropy how can there be any beneftis for post reproductive phase? What kind of adaptations does evolution bring over long term that do not only support fitness for the reproduction phase in life? This should be the "protagonistic pleiotropy" for genes that benefit all over life (like some repair genes). Then the novel diet would impair these capacities I suggest. If Michael R. Rose by himself could clarify this point that wuold be great!

Interesting interview, hope your channel gets better known, even though it's audio only, here on TH-cam. One suggestion for future interviews: a 4 min introduction is rather long. I appreciate there's a lot of info to convey, but maybe some (or most) of that info can be incorporated into the actual interview, otherwise you might unnecessarily lose some less motivated listeners.
