I motion track and stabilise the footage in davinci resolve. I use the planar tracker and transform setting to select the area I want stabilised.

@@aestheticaviation Thanks again for that, I've been playing around and all has been going well, my only issue is when there are objects infront of the main subject, sometimes the planar tracker briefly looses the subject which causes a "jolt" in the footage after stabilizing, is there any way to minimize that or smooth it out?

Don’t worry, the issue you have with obstructions infront of the object you’re tracking is an issues everyone has, that’s just the nature of this kind of stabilisation. You can’t really fix it, you just have to track lots of different areas and get creative with what you track. Most clips I edit have multiple planar trackers in the timeline. If you look closely at aircraft (especially a smaller narrowbody) moving past the parked A340 in my most recent video, you will be able to see slight jolts in the footage as the stabiliser couldn’t fully stabilise the video with the poles and A340 in the way. For example with those videos I would track the tail right before an aircraft goes behind an obstruction, before immediately tracking the nose of the aircraft when it appears again. When it comes to stabilisation essentially the less obstructions the better, which is one of the problems of spotting from the T4 carpark here in Melbourne. It’s harder to track objects when they’re inconsistent throughout the video, they have low contrast and when they’re backlit.

I have today managed to do very similar, I used extra planar trackers on the timeline and between bits where an object is about to go infront I stopped the track, then moved the video forward to when the object is out of the way and created a second planar track and filled in the keyframes with another track between that object.

I appreciate it. Although many people only watch videos for the heavies, personally I enjoy a mix and variety of different aircraft, which is why I included the Dash-8 into this video.

I haven’t managed to capture Turkish Airlines yet. The problem is that it’s scheduled during the night, making it much harder to get quality footage, especially with the video camera that I use.

Thank you. I can tell you that the raw footage was much shakier than the end result thanks to video stabilisation.

The sticker was added to N2749U to celebrate the Sydney WorldPride event last year. The sticker was on the aircraft between February and April of 2023.
