Vampire Crabs Tank and their babies!
มุมมอง 33K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Quick video of our vampire crab setup. We started with two and months down the line before going on vacation we were surprised they became parents! They have at least 25 babies in the tank with them. It has been awesome watching them molt and get some color! Unexpected things like this is what keeps the hobby interesting! Enjoy! Music by: @dcuttermusic / www.davidcuttermusic.com

what do you feed your adult peacock gudegons?
Niiiiiiice 👍
The fittonia is fine even if roots are completely wet?
what fish did you put in there? What kind of fish co habit well with vampire crabs?
We put Mosquito fish. They don't bother each other. Before I knew they need land, I used to have some in a community tank with various fish-- corycats, dojo loaches, guppies, etc. Never had problems with the crabs eating the fish or anything like that but I cannot say for certain which fish would be best
I am a owner of 6 rope fish for the past 5 years now. Couple issues here: The gravel shouldnt be used you should have a finer substrate I use sand. 2. you have cory's inside so do I and they too prefer fine substrate. Without it it will do them harm over time. 3. Rope fish enjoy hiding places to sleep and hide and stash food in... I use slate rocks piled on each other and heavily planted with Brazilian pennywort. Grows incredibly fast and super easy to take care of. 4. Its highly unusual that they will have a success rate at breeding if you have more scavengers meaning bottom dwellers. Rope fish will eat their fry and so will corys and your pleco. which will bring down the success rate. but it will happen regardless if you have both sex within the tank. This is my favorite type of fish... just keep in mind anything small enough that can fit in their mouths will end up in their mouths. Rope fish arent as friendly as one thinks. they will also show aggression to one another if their new to the tank. but once they get to know one another they will eat swim and sleep together. Their such a pleasure to raise and watch. My longest one is a albino breed pure yellow /orange tone full body at 2 feet now. while the other five range from 12 inches to about 15 inches and all are different shades of brown sandy tones with yellow stomachs Thank you for sharing . Do you still have them 5 years later? I would love to know how progress went since this video. Cheers and thanks again
Thanks for your comment! My tank setup for them has changed drastically after learning more about their needs throughout the years! I have 4 of them in a 125 gallon tank with sand substrate. Handful of hiding places and they are still living with corycats! I have learned the hard way that they will eat anything 😂 took a school of 20 neons for that lesson!! Hahah
I believe I have one video of the 125g with them in it but it might just be on my instagram/tiktok lol
@@sofishticatedkeepers262 I made the same mistake when trying to breed guppies in the same tank. Not only did they eat all the fry but they ate all the parents too lmao
That's so true. Ropefish look so calm and seem like they just mind their own business. Don't let them fool you. They are very aggressive when they fight. They even do the death rolls. Kinda scary and fascinating to watch when they fight.
What substrate is in water?
Be careful, different species mean the will fight each other
😍😍😍

I love how the water is within the terrarium's false bottom layer! I've been trying to figure out a good way to keep the water clean while having only a small, shallow pool accessible to the crabs. This is a great solution.
What do you mean "false bottom layer" ? I am trying to build a first small vampire crab Paludarium with my son, and learning from videos, would try to avoid foam, glue, etc... thank you :))
question how offen do you need to do a water change
We are terrible with water changes lol, plus the plants soak up a lot... turkey baster to remove any dirt here and there but usually just do top-off a couple times a week!
my vampire crabs are super shy. is this normal?
Yes, they are nocturnal typically! I usually get my best footage at night lol
Whats the tank size
This was a 60 gallon
@@sofishticatedkeepers262 really cool
So whats the smallest fish size you would trust with the rope fish? I'm setting up a community tank. Also would bamboo shrimp be safe?
I would not trust them with any type of shrimp. They have hunted and eaten neon tetras and kuhli loaches we've added to the tank. Bright fish, like Rams, Bettas, etc have also been dinner to these guys 😮💨 it was definitely a learning experience over here! Lol. They haven't messed with our corycats, rainbow fish, medium/large tetras, roselines, ghost knife, and smaller catfish (Raphael or bumble bee)
Are you going to sell captive bread mandarin vampire crabs?
Have not attempted, not sure if that's the route we'd like to go at this time!
@@sofishticatedkeepers262 I understand it's hard to find time, but if you can find time, this species really needs more captive breeding.
I used to keep tarantulas as pets 10 years ago. Very interesting creatures, with lots of ceremonies and such. I'm figuring these crabs are interesting to look at as well.
hi! thank you for this video! very intersting. I'm about to buy a couple of geosesarma. The terrarium is mainly formed by the emerged part, heavily planted. Any little tips for the water part, or in general? Did you add watwer conditioner after every change of wate or refill? How often do you feed them? thanks!
Make sure your pump is accessible, in case you need to clean it! Yes to the conditioner! Our guys eat anything really lol, fish pellets, blood worms, fruits, veggies-- they are not picky! Best of luck with your setup 👍

You keep different Vampire Crab Variants together, was there any problems between them?
Is that a panda garra? 🐼 🤩🤩🤩 I also have a panda with my peacock 🦚
may I know which filter is that?
what's your electricity bill on this
I like this relaxing video. The crabs has various colors. The plants are variety types and all curious. Wonderful world for their habitat!!
Thank you for the nice video! I'm caring a vampire crab. They look cool!
Do you care about tds dh gh and kh?
No >.<
We’re did you get them
They pop up once in awhile at our local fish store
If you happen to be near a pet supermarket, they carry them pretty often, I work for the company currently and started back my cichlid tank with a pictus cat, and rope fish
Like where cuz I’m in mass
Like pets mart or smaller businesses
Could you give me a name of a fish store I can’t find any
do they taste good? With my fish i like to eat them if big enough some are good
Great video, thanks for the information. Picked up a male and female orange arm Borneo pair over the weekend.
Oh! Those look so cool!! Hope they spawn!
I'm still so suprised they come out so regularly for you. I'd love ot know if that took time, less intense light, or space, or even a mix of all three.
Started with 3 in a 3 gallon setup... couple months later they had babies-- upgraded setups from there! In the 2.5 gallon it just had plants, water, slate and fine sand-- super simple setup
Greatly shot on a phone camera👍
Wow
THIS IS AN AWESOME VIDEO!!! What are the really colorful orange and purple plants? I love how you picked flowers that are the same color of the craps. 😁
Sweeeet setup
Beautiful creature,it will look more cool if you have flower anemone.
Is this strictly fresh water ? And also what genus are these guys ?
Can the larvae form and grow in fresh water
what temperature is the aquarium
From what i could identify some kind of dracaena, tradescantia spathacea, a bromeliad, nerve plants, coleus, pothos, and others i dont recognize
Good looks
Where did you get females and would you be willing to sell any of them? I've got one lonely male and that's it!
I put tropical springtails in mine and the crabs seem to get a snack while the tank gets microcleaned. My "aquarium" wood keeps molding while out of the water, supposedly the tails will eat it but it's bad for crabs? Wish there was more info out there. Would love to plant my tank like that but pothos is it for now until I learn more. I used lava rock to layer up with activated charcoal then put sand on it, not sure how many plants can grow like that but I didn't want to have mud water.... Only have 3 crabs so if they breed I'll upgrade to a 20L and divide it with acrylic.... Your tanks pretty badass 😜
Thank you 🙂 I haven't read anything about the molding wood-- I did have the issue of molding but our cleanup crew handled it and I didn't lose any crabs in the tank! Also the layering you mentioned is almost like what was down to our upgraded tank! Have you checked that one out? Good luck with some crab babies! It's pretty exciting!!!
What’s your temp? Mine won’t breed!! What’s your secret? lol
Romantic lighting and music to set the mood! 😂 Jk, temp in our house ranges from 73-75. We did start off with three in a three gallon tank, saw babies one day... which forced the upgrade in the tank. And maybe 7 or 8 batches since then... typically when it's a full moon. The moon thing always amazes me! How long have you had yours?
@@sofishticatedkeepers262 I’ve had them for a couple months.. they have aqua sand in their tank and they are borrowing in it.. but no babies to be seen 😓
@@sofishticatedkeepers262 I had no idea about the full moon thing though.. I just moved the tank and is now in front of a window thinking maybe they’d like the sun... I guess it’ll be good for the moon as well haha
@@sofishticatedkeepers262 maybe I’ll put on some savage garden for them tonight 😂😂
@@ashlyraquelferrel3566 😂 I don't think they need to actually see the moon, ours in a spot where the window is always closed lol The sand is good! Lots of plants? And might be a silly question but did you check to see if you have at least one male and one female? Lol
My plants keep dying on me, do you have tips for me? And how is your javamoss so green mine is brown
Most of the plants that have survived are the ones that like a lot of water. I'm constantly refilling and trimming since the plant roots have direct access the water 24/7 And lol to the moss-- the crabs always eat it! So I do have to replace them, but the moss likes the constant moisture/humidity
Do you need to replace the whole gravel and everything? Like once a year or not?
Nope
How often does their einclosjure need to be cleaned?
Honestly haven't cleaned it since it's been put up-- except for trimming, wiping the glass down, pulling dead leaves for the plants that don't get as much light. The water gets soaked up by the plants, so that constantly gets replaced. If I see the water has a lot of dirt, I use a turkey baster once in awhile
@@sofishticatedkeepers262 I see videos that use a panel between the land and water, you don't have that. Is there a reason for it? People say it will get moldy and is not good
@@vibes8763 I don't use the panel because I wanted a setup where the plants can survive without me watering them daily 👍
How do you keep the humidity level higher than 70% and what do you do if you not home for few days?
Not sure of the percentage but the glass lid creates humidity within it. We would leave it a crack open sometimes to still give the setup some outside air
What do you use for your humidity?
Glass lid, lol
how do you keep the water from soaking into the birt?
I don't. The plants love it. Always having to trim lol
@@sofishticatedkeepers262 ohhhh it take care of its self. Big brain.
@@Pvtparts. 😂😂😂
Do you have a water heater/filter if so where have you hidden them?
No heater! We are in FL but could hide one using this material called Coroplast polypropylene (found it in the plexiglass section at home depot) and build a little box for the heater!
Nice video just found ur channel 😊👍
Hi there!! Hope all is well!!!
Hi, I was thinking about getting some vampire crabs and was wondering if you can keep different types of them together? For example could you have a Halloween one with a purple one? And also can they live with snails? And my last question is will they eat my moss ball?
Hi Kristie! We do have them mixed but I believe it increases the risk of some of them growing without color-- so I'd be careful about that!
Yes to the snails! They do eat moss but they haven't touched our moss balls specifically, so that is a good question!
@@sofishticatedkeepers262 ok thank you so much!!
@@sofishticatedkeepers262 Hi, I am considering getting vampire crabs and was wondering if there was a good variety of snails that lay eggs the crabs will love munching on. I'm wanting an ecosystem that supports itself.
