Samick Artist 5 string - Roadtrip, Repair, and Review
A special one this week. I drive halfway down the country to correct the errors of my youth, and rescue a bass from (almost) certain death. Sorry it's a bit long, there was a heap of footage I didn't use as well as several lengthy explanations that weren't relevant, much general philosophical musing and other assorted bull***t.
Let me know if you want me to do a travel show🤣

Aria pro II - Mystery Cardinal(?) Bass - Teardown and review
มุมมอง 1.6K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
Is it a Cardinal? It's certainly trying to be but is it really? The only things we know about this bass is that it's a Korean made Aria Pro II from the year 2000. Some of the hardware is identical to it's contemporary models, but It's not featured in any of the catalogues from the era, and I cannot find a single photo of another bass like it. Prototype? Short run? Custom job? We may never know....

Yes, I just watched that too, interesting design choices he made, particularly putting the magnet on top... I've got a bit to say about that and his build shows some interesting things about string physics generally. I'l be getting back into regular videos in a couple of weeks so that'll be an interesting topic for sure. Cheers

it was amazing and I love your voice narrating this. It felt like Ron Swanson was building the instrument, which also felt like something Ron Swanson would do. I was really speechless when you started playing this. "Can't argue with that tone" is a very light way to say that the instrument just sounds really beautiful. This is really what a bass should sound like in a perfect world. It's so clean and amazing, that really touched me immediately. You also played so smoothly and perfectly on time during the jam session, it made me want to pick up an instrument and practice a little. stay healthy and thank you for sharing your work with us, it's really something

The whole reason for buying an EB-1 is the "mudbucker growl". It isn't SUPPOSED to be a smooth sounding bass. Good enough for John Paul Jones and Felix Pappalardi... good enough for me. To each his own though. I'll keep the mudbucker and if I had to I would deepen the pick up cavity. A Gibson EB-1 is going to cost you $8 - $10 K for one that isn't trashed out. The Eppy is STILL a fairly rare instrument. They simply didn't make many of these and I almost cried when you started shaving away. Well... like I said... to each his own.

Just found your channel. Subbed. I have a short history with this bass. I'd used an active 5 for years but the circuit was always giving me problems, forever in and out the shop. So when my band were getting busier after the pandemic lockdowns I bought this from gear4music as a cheap "workhorse." The strings out of the box do indeed feel like razor wire, but after new strings and a setup it was good to go. 3 or 4 months ago the bridge pickup died. Was still usable as a P but really wanted it fixed, especially as the band are booked to record soon. I looked around for a while trying to decide on new pickups - money being a factor - until a set of pre-owned Nordstrand's popped up on Bass Direct the other week. And Royal Mail promptly lost them. Decided last night to go for credit on a Sadowsky MetroExpress and got it. I've also heard pros and cons but I'm hoping that the pickups at least last longer than a couple of years, and I have a bass for recording now. The Aria is now a backup P, I suppose 😅 Shame because I'd grown attached to it. Good little (large) gigging bass.

I have one. I spent a bit of time setting up the action, but I have to say this bass is extraordinary. *NOTHING* beats it for low-end growl. It's so good it's scary. And it's my fave slap bass. I'm very, very pleased I acquired one. Just today I've just ordered Artist's 4-string fretless variant. It'll be great too I have no doubt.

How is the neck dive on this? I would assume that a 5 string neck and the weight of the tuners would counter weight the smaller and lighter body of a 4 string bass.

10:51 whats that piece? I cant find it, i can find everything else i just dont know to wire the counter and the moter to the same power supply Nvm, terminal lead strip solder, typed in Google you can find it, then you soldered copper wire across the bottom and cut the middle part out to separate them, so a 12v power supply can run 2 things from it and still gives enough power to both?

If you have a bridge that's both a top loader and string-thru and it has treaded saddles, shouldn't you, theoretically be able to double-string that? Seems like less work than designing and manufacturing a whole new bridge IMO

Those Rickenbackers aren't for everyone, but I prefer their sound over anything else. I'd get one, but (1) I'm not that good, (2) I can't afford one, and (3) DAYUM, they're big and I'm 5'8". Beautiful guitars, Rickenbacker doesn't f*ck around.

I have something similar to this (running pegs all on the top side) but pickups and pot knobs are the same. Got it for free from a music store in Point Edward’s Ontario Canada. It was a parts this with no tuning pegs on it… Originally black but repainted sparkly red… However, I pulled out all the frets and filled them in with - LePage wood filler and so, it was my fretless. 20 years later, still using it. A great bass guitar.

Awesome to see you try this. Several years ago I was considering getting a bottle jack press for my shop. Making dies to try this same sort of thing was on the list of things I wanted to use it for. I ended up deciding against the press and the idea just collected dust in the back of my mind. I never considered just trying to beat it into the wood. I think I’m going to give it a go!

I believe Rick still uses nitro cellulose laquer. So if you can get a guitar buffer with dry buffing compound I’d wet sand it using a 500 grit and dewalt orbital sander, from there put the sander away and go up to 800 grit, then 1000 grit and 1500 grit. Always inspecting your work so you don’t sand through. Finally 45 minutes on a big wheel guitar buffer never use a shop steel buffer you’ll instantly destroy the guitar, but you can get that looking brand new no cracks, you shouldent need to re clear coat it.

Did you play the Bloodwood bass through an amplifier before you relieved it of all of that weight? And if you did, what was, if any, difference in sound and timbre, sustain and richness of bottom end? I'd be interested to know. Also, honestly, if you were blindfolded, and the elephantine weight of the weighty fella wasn't an issue, could you honestly say you would be able to tell which was the real deal? Hmm? What vintage is the actual Ricky, because the one I had, the pickup cover thing that goes above the strings was metal, not plastic. I just chose to remove it, I found it got in the way too much.

I have been kicking myself every day for the last 45 years for selling my beautiful and incredible Ricky 4003 back then. What a young dickhead I was. It was "da shit", complete with the legendary "Rick-o-Sound" dual outputs, which I ran through a power and preamp stereo set-up, with a beastly sound emanating forth from the two "W" bins which had two 15's in each one, and two 4x10 cabs. My bass amplifier set-up completely filled a roadie van, and the roadies hated me, probably rightfully. Hey, it was the 70's, okay? Excess was the order of the day, and a big sound was never big enough! But that Ricky, oh what an idjit I were!

This is the bass that J used on the Rosier music video. J drives the whole song well (as per the single's mix 😂) and you can clearly hear him all throughout. I have to admit, this bass started my broke ass' fixation on japanese signature basses and I've been gassing for this one since 2009/2010. Lol. Which is sad since this one is much more rare (in my experience) compared to J's next Grassroots signature bass (the one that looks like a les paul jr with double cut away). Seen this bass float on our local fb marketplace only twice since 2010.
