On March 7, 2023, Sedgwick County participated in a state-wide tornado drill in preparation for the oncoming severe weather season. Instead of a 1 minute test done usually every Monday at noon, weather permitting, the sirens sounded for a full five minutes. Went to sleep the night before after a near miss with a tornado near Tulsa International Airport. Woke up at 6:15am the very next morning to tornado sirens again, then saw this behemoth moving in.

Fellow Kansan here. I live an hour south of Wichita. Where I live, they test the tornado sirens every Tuesday at noon from March-October. I’ve only had like 4 or 5 tornado warnings where I live
in wichita every monday at noon id hear these, 20 years there and since moving away for a few years i still expect it lol

The ATI siren you hear will be getting replaced with either a Federal Signal 2001-130 or 508. Sedgwick County got tired of replacing the drivers that kept blowing on the ATI sirens.
I’ve read that, can’t say I’m disappointed. I’ve never been a fan of ATIs, but I will be sad if any of the nearby Thunderbolts ever get replaced by a 2001 or 508. I always liked the ACA cyclones and was sad when Amarillo replaced them with 508s.

Up closer to Maize!
I live on the north west side of Wichita (my kids go to Maize SCHOOL’s), and every single Monday at noon unless it’s a holiday or there’s bad weather outside the tornado sirens go off… This just happened and for some reason some days you can hardly hear them and then other days like today ( X of July 2023) it feels like they’re going to blast you across the room with their noise
Imagine hearing those sirens at 12 AM!

"oh my god, look how beutiful it is"... I understand that. It's a weird and difficult thing to process when an act of nature rips through our hometown, and yet it is a spectacle almost beyond comprehension. terrifying and beautiful.

I don’t mean to negate the seriousness of the situation. It was, undeniably a beautiful tornado. But I would’ve much rather driven 30 minutes up the turnpike and watched it over the empty Flint Hills. It was really upsetting to me to know it was in the heart of Andover.
I’m just glad there wasn’t major injuries or death. Reed I think called it and people were definitely watching.
