Unspeakable ! beautiful stops and colour of sound as for that thunderous reed stop at 9:03 .. hands up !!!! Be blessed indeed for sharing this beautiful piece of music.

    Let us remember that Hitler was a Catholic, and that the Vatican signed the Concordat, the first major international legitimization of the Nazi regime. There was no Christianity in the White Rose movement that we know of. But if it makes you fell better, very well.

    The cathedral really has stood the test of time. Despite having a mother who grew up Coventry, I never really visited the cathedral until on a school trip back in about 1978 (by this time, we lived many miles away). It was quite stunning then, and it is still stunning. Perhaps because of having relatives in Coventry, I have a fondness for modernist buildings as the city always seems futuristic back in the 1970s.

    Its a terrible shame that they didnt restore the ruined cathedral, rather than build that hideous monstrosity they call the new cathedral. It is so ugly and such a wast of money and materials. Very sad.

    • @paintedpilgrim
      @paintedpilgrim 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Given the devastation of the blitz across the city wouldn't you rather have it spent on rebuilding the city as a whole, rather than just one building. Many other cities felt the same devastation and demolished the ruins, the ruins in Coventry stand as that memorial. The new cathedral may not be your choice of style, but has a place in faith and is reminiscent of many other styles of ecclesiastical design the ruins themselves are still consecrated.. Many love the new building, and as someone who attended services there (and graduated there) the building has an amazing sense of peace and openers, and is a legally protected structure as the the ruins.

    Thank you for this heartfelt tour. I've always felt close to Coventry Cathedral because as a child in Sunday School in the US I collected pennies, nickels and dimes to help finance the building of the new cathedral. I really appreciate the tour starting at the first cathedral (only last week I watched the Time Team show of that excavation.) And then proceeding forward into present time. From this video I enjoyed seeing the cathedral architecture used or referenced in the new cathedral. I am particularly moved by your mission to promote forgiveness and peace on Earth.

    After WWII European countries ravaged by war and razed to the ground by the RAF used their share of the $15 billion Martial plan aid package to rebuild their infrastructure and historic buildings to such perfection it is hard to imagine today that they once lay utterly destroyed. Britain on the other hand bulldozed what remained of historic cities like Coventry and replaced what once was with crass meaningless concrete and squandered the money on the creation of a welfare state. You couldn't make it up.

    • @rocky5755
      @rocky5755 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wonder whether the generation who went through the war would rather Marshall monies be spent on their buildings or their welfare? Never forget it was the Germans who started the war, and their bombing of Coventry provided the blueprint for the raids that followed. As usual politicians/ the elite start the war - and the ordinary people suffer. The erection of a new cathedral and retention of ruins of the old mean we cannot forget the evil inflicted on Coventry.

    To all those who perished 80 years ago today, you are not forgotten. You are part of and a testament to, Coventry’s unbreakable spirit and will be so forever. In 2020, the Coventrians of today face our own hardships, as we adjust to a disrupted way of life and we worry just as much about what the future holds for us, as our forbears worried in 1940. They showed us strength of character, strength of community and strength of prayer. Let us follow the example that has been set for us and meet this new challenge with the same indomitable spirit and dignity as the Coventrians of 1940 met theirs. Father Forgive.

    Thank you, Dean John. I was born during that awful time in 1940. The ethos of "Forgiveness" was the background to my early days as I grew up in the city. While studying at the Lanchester College of Art and Technology right next door to the cathedral I often ate my sandwiches at lunchtime in the old ruins. Little did I think that a day would come when I would have to give a great deal of thought to this subject of "Forgiveness". It did come when my 19 year old daughter was blown out of the sky over Lockerbie at Christmas 1988 by a terrorist bomb. The subtle influence of the cathedral's message was a real strength in the days that followed. - Thank you, Coventry.

    wow, I passed the vintage clothing show inside the Cathedral today, after it had finished,and have to say, why the hell aren't you letting people know about this? Also the University is next door, so I like many students would have liked to have come; but you gotta let people know. Aside from that about time the Cathedral makes use of the massive space and visually pleasing glass entrance. Also, the city center has a fresher day where all shops are offering discounts and open late, only for students, you may wanna try and organize events in sync with each other next time. And let the local papers know about what your doing... I definitely wanna know when the next one is, love events like this...

    I was a courier at Coventry Cathedral in the summer of 1971. A wonderful experience - lived in Kennedy House with various service & study groups from all over the world, including from behind the Iron Curtain. Heard David Lepine at evensong doing a rendition of Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring (Bach) with the choir which was flawless. Provost H C N (Bill) Williams led a talented and dare I say it, eccentric, team - Canon J W Poole, precentor, and his formidable wife Judith, Canon Spink, Ken Woolhouse and his talented wife, I could add name after name to the list and run out of space. Went back in 2003, cathedral much the same, city far more subdued. Would recommend any A Level RE student or Art student to visit - much to learn, see and experience. Thank you for posting.
