This film did everything right above and beyond the quality of it's production, but none of the commitment involving not recycling racist Japanese tropes (that's why they actually invented a language instead of butchering one that already existed) here or in other movies of this period ever stuck. Nor do I think the performance at the box office it deserves would have changed this all that much. Many of the presuppositons behind Japan's Modern Myth are still present. Even Japanese people commenting on this very video don't seem to have understood the point.

I swear the creators of Outlaw Star loved this scene in particular. Everything from the detail on the launch clamps releasing, to the lighting as the rocket goes through the clouds. They lovingly recreated this scene when the Outlaw Star launches from Sentinel.

I forgot how tense this was. This film also has one of the best opening sequences ever. It lays the groundwork for an alternative Earth and its history. No lengthy narration needed.

There's just something very impressive about the level of detail shown in the damage and destruction of the planes. They drew better by hand all that time ago than some modern hundred million dollar wannabe blockbuster movies render explosions and battle damage today.

I loved that movie back in the day, the details are amazing and the drama pretty good too, it contains the best fully animated dogfights I saw until I got to see Macross Plus. But I hope Twitter never discover Wings of Honneamise because some controversial scene that modern day weirdos would make a fuss about.
