Driving down Granville Gulf in Vermont during fall foliage
Granville Gulf is a steep valley in central Vermont. I took a video while driving through there today. The fall colors were prime.

Mosaic Damascus Blade Part 2
มุมมอง 713 ปีที่แล้ว
This video is the second part of my first attempt at Mosaic Damascus (pattern welded) steel. This part deals with my attempt to weld segments of the billet side by side and my switch to the zig-zag method. Then forging and finishing the blade.
Mosaic Damascus Blade Part 1
มุมมอง 1883 ปีที่แล้ว
This video is Part 1 of my first attempt at mosaic pattern welded (Damascus) steel. Standard pattern welded steel involves stacking and forge welding parallel layers of stainless and non-stainless steel. To get a pattern the maker then twists, cuts, or grinds the billet. Mosaic pattern welded steel is made by arranging pieces of steel in a pattern inside a steel tube and forge welding that. The...
Bears in my Yard
มุมมอง 423 ปีที่แล้ว
I had some visitors the other day, April 24, 2021. It's a black bear sow with what look like three yearling cubs. Sorry about the weird optics; I was using one side of a pair of binoculars as a telephoto lens. The music is Icarus by Feast or Famine from their album Brecon Beacon.
Hammering a Damascus Billet
มุมมอง 233 ปีที่แล้ว
I've been working on a billet of mosaic Damascus (pattern welded) steel. In this clip I'm refining the size of a 2x2 stack of the original billet. If you look carefully you'll see a thickness stop set on the lower die of the hammer. The spacers I put in are 1-1/4" thick total. The next step will be cutting this billet into "butter pats" and welding them together edge to edge to expose the pattern.
Finding True South Using the Sun
มุมมอง 4773 ปีที่แล้ว
If you are designing a passive solar house or installing a solar array you need to know where true south is. A magnetic compass is unreliable, but the sun will never fail you.
Foxes Visit at Night 02 25 21
มุมมอง 273 ปีที่แล้ว
Being a wild and crazy guy, I had a couple of American foxEZ at my place last night. My trail camera caught them with infrared, so their eyeballs get kind of spooky.
Hiltonian Conversational Reflector; How to stay warm while having a distanced get-together outside
มุมมอง 1473 ปีที่แล้ว
I designed and built some lightweight parabolic trough reflectors so I can stay warm sitting around a fire outdoors. Build a pair and have a covid-safe convo without freezing this winter. Important note: When I mention "heaters" I mean *radiant* heaters, not ones that produce hot air. The Mark 1 is made with a survival blanket and electrical conduit, so it can be disassembled for transport. How...
Sending firewood down the chute
มุมมอง 8404 ปีที่แล้ว
Perhaps you will find this weirdly satisfying. This is how I move firewood from where it gets dumped in my driveway 20 feet downhill to my woodshed. The trough is a plastic culvert cut in half lengthwise.
Mouse in the Leaves

I caught a deer mouse in my house in a live trap and let it out in the woods. For some reason it didn’t immediately run off.
Following the Sun Demo

A short video on where the sun actually rises and sets, and how to take advantage of this. This is a demo reel for a proposed series on solar design.
Shibata Bow Making
มุมมอง 3167 ปีที่แล้ว
Kanjuro Shibata is the 21st in a family line of traditional Japanese bow makers. He is the bow maker to the Emperor of Japan. The "yumi" he makes are used by practitioners of kyudo, Japanese meditative archery. In July of 2017 he gave a workshop at Karme Choling in Barnet Vermont. This included a demonstration of how he laminates and shapes a yumi.
Making Biang Biang Mian noodles by hand
มุมมอง 8517 ปีที่แล้ว
A traditional Chinese wheat noodle, hand stretched on an oiled surface. Great chewy texture. Recipe at Cooks Science. The chile vinaigrette in that recipe is good as well. www.cooksillustrated.com/recipes/9469-flat-hand-pulled-noodles-biang-biang-mian-with-chili-oil-vinaigrette
There’s 99% Reflective wrap sold in huge rolls 4’x250yds (or 500yds?) with insulation supplies that’s meant to help attic insulation by reflecting heat. Mine is slightly perforated but I think I got it at home depot. Pricey roll but cheap/sq ft & you can improve attic heat performance with the remainder. Cheaper would be space blankets, often available for $1-$5 or in emergency kits. If using spray adhesive over flashing they should be fine. Also like your pipe fed smoke reducing fire pit. I’m collecting ideas for building one. thanks.
The survival blankets have a ripstop nylon backing that makes them sturdy. You would probably be disappointed by the lack of durability of the roll material or the cheap film emergency blankets. You can get the survival blankets on eBay for $20.
Boring
Pretty cool
If you're cold, they're cold. Bring them inside!
Aaaand serve them porridge? At just the right temperature?
did i just watch a video of a deer? yes i did.
A smile maker ,,
I invented this in my mind. Thank you for implementing!
Here's where to get the survival blankets: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01H6NC8XU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I'm sure you can easily build a couple.
This is brilliant and I’ve been dreaming of inventing something like this Would you sell one of your units ??
Hi Kimberly Thank you so much. I’m not planning to be in the manufacturing business and I am a slow carpenter anyway. The pattern for the parabolas is in the description. I’ll bet you could get a local carpenter to build one.
Good Job Hilton ! :-)
Looks good! Thanks for sharing.
You convinced me!
