    Wondering if anyone has any insight into (1) why the larger clutch cover, (2) why no captive bar nuts or (3) why roller chain catch vs. original stud-type? And I agree that it's really crazy that Stihl doesn't supply bar nuts, since you can't just move the bar nuts over from the original clutch cover (obviously...).

    • @grizzlywoodservices4825
      @grizzlywoodservices4825 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have yet to get an answer to those questions. I do know that they still do not offer the MS 400 with the wrap handle from the factory. All the ones out there are conversions. You don’t necessarily have to use the bigger cover and the molded section that goes with it. I have considered converting it back to the small cover because I really do like the captured nuts myself.

    • @johnnewell5025
      @johnnewell5025 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@grizzlywoodservices4825 I was thinking the same, no reason I can think of not to use the smaller cover. I ordered a few virgin captured nuts and am probably going to machine the stud holes to the dimensions Stihl uses with the captive nuts and convert the cover that comes with the parts kit.

    Had the same process bobble with the left side AV on the original handle! And noted the same missing instruction to loosen the left chain guide before attempting to install the new upper trim piece for the clutch cover. I spaced the instruction to replace the tapered head fastener for the original chain catcher with a new fastener with a cylindrical head, which might have caused some minor excitement with a running saw. Reusing the original tapered head fastener would work fine, too, but would be hard to get good torque on and would catch a lot of oily sworf. Agree on fastener "c" (with the threadlock) going into the cylinder side of the top AV spring. The original in my saw didn't have any threadlock, but that's got to be right. BTW, I don't think anyone would do this, but if you install that fastener while the saw is actually hot and torque it down to he-man foot pounds you may never get it out after the hot aluminum contracts. The new clutch cover left me with a bunch of questions, which I'll post in a separate comment.

    • @grizzlywoodservices4825
      @grizzlywoodservices4825 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Absolutely my friend. The contour is standard round. It’s the same for Oregon and Stihl. • @grizzlywoodservices4825
      @grizzlywoodservices4825 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can’t say that I have ever tried noodling with milling chain. The typical angle you mill with the wood ends up being finer particles or very small chips in comparison to what crosscut chain gives you. That being said, I suspect you would have less debris(noodles) jamming into the saw because it would be smaller particulate. If your goal is to cut slabs or boards, milling chain is preferred as that is it’s intended use. You in theory end up with a smoother finish compared to doing the same with crosscut.
