Hi Alexandr… thanks for the video. Just wondering how much physical noise the keybed and buttons make? I’m planning to use it live with a vocal mic sitting above it. Some units are a nightmare! Thanks
@@DavidKemp-xn4ln Hey David! Thank you! Good point - some keyboards are very loud indeed. It’s really quiet! I can only talk about the semi-weighted keys on the 49 & 61 models though and I can assure you, you won’t get that plasticky click noises you get with other midi keyboards!
@ Ah nice one! Yeah it’s the 61 I’m after… think I’ll get one ordered 👍 Thanks again
First!! 🎉
@@guestimator 😂😂🤍🤍
Nice review with audio demos on the background! You should try the chase bliss mood, i use both on my board and the sounds are fantastic.
@@Evrgreens11 Thank you so much! Yes, Mood MkII is on my list for a while.. I think I’m not going to resist anymore 😬
Im so blown away by this instrumet
@@ronaldlundbohm815 Same here ☺️
The power plug that plugs into unit you need to twist it to lock
The various size options is great - different cases. I have owned other 61 key, 49 key, 32 key and 25 key controllers and they all had a purpose - live, mobile, studio. I like the 61. Novation is software agnostic, but easy to program or configure for whatever DAW and plugins you prefer. Arturia midi controllers work out-if-the-box with Arturia Analog Lab and V Collection. NI Kontrol S midi controllers work out-of-the-box with Komplete 15, Kontakt and the NKS standard. The LaunchKey can do it all, but isn’t delivered with integration to Komplete 15 or V Collection X, or any other major bundle. I think I prefer to know and understand my midi mapping configuration, so the LaunchKey appeals to me. I use the 4 custom slots, I use lots of helpful midi mapping with plugins.
Hey! Yes, I agree all sizes can be useful for various scenarios! I have a couple of 37 key keyboards, a 49, and a couple of 61 keys. For most things while in the studio I tend to feel more comfortable with 61 keys. In terms of software integration, I use just a few plugins so I don’t really care about it that much.. If I really wanna map something it’s quite easy to do. If you use a specific plugin suite, some keyboards might work better. For example the Arturia ones, e.g. the Astrolab is the perfect example of a MIDI keyboard for plugins!
No polyphonic aftertouch, so a no from me. I go for the Native Instruments Kontrol S61 MK3 which is also way more expensive.
@@HH-Thorsten Yeah if you actually care about poly aftertouch, that’s the way to go
Hey man, great video! I was wondering if you knew of another novation keyboard that also shows scales and chords but with a bigger LCD screen. I don't know if I'll be able to see it on that tiny screen, or you think it's not that bad? Thank you
Hey, thanks! I don’t think there is another Novation keyboard that has this feature tbh.. The screen is indeed a small one but enough for most cases..
0:12 first of all I’d recommend buying both for the price and running them side by side
Agreed 😅
I watched a lot of videos about the MK4 because I’m gonna buy one soon, but your video is by far the best! Thanks for the great review! I subbed. What plugin do you use for the piano throughout the video? It sounds so nice!
@@RR-vv3ti Thank you so much my friend! It means a lot🙏 It’s the Spitfire Cinematic Soft Piano!
Wonder how well would that work in tandem with a launchpad and whether or not it makes any sense to get it if i already do have a launchpad. Some knobs and faders are pretty nice to have as well as having a whole different controller to control a bunch more instruments t the same time.
How well do the keys work for fast runs? On one hand, the long keys are perfect because the feel should be similar whether you press the key at the end or at the top. On the other hand, if the keys are wiggly, it could be like playing mud. Also, are the keys weighted, springy, or soft? I prefer a soft light touch for my top synth keyboard and a heavy feel for piano. (I really dislike the whole idea of “semi-weighted” as a bad compromise.) And would it work as an organ controller? I’m worried that a palm gliss would move the keys side to side a bit too much. I’d be looking to use this more as a controller, than as a synth, because finding a good, deep keybed is almost impossible these days.
Hey! Due to its nature the keybed feels better for softer playing since it’s extremely sensitive to the slightest of touch but from my testing works great for faster runs too. It is indeed a semi-weighted keyboard but nothing similar to the other semi weighted keys you can find on numerous midi controllers and synths. The keyboard is a whole new experience and it takes some practice to master it, however when you take some time with it, it’s the best I’ve played so far. The wiggly keys will definitely lead to “mistakes” at first but after a while you’ll get used to them. Also keep in mind that you can set the intervals you want to move as you bend the keys. For example, you can set it to 1/4 of a semitone so you have a slight vibrato that’s always pleasant to your ear. You can even disable the pitch bending completely if you don’t need it for a particular sound. I cannot recommend it enough as a midi keyboard but also as a synth - it has some incredible presets for any genre. And since you prefer a soft light touch for your synths the Osmose excels at that! Hope that helps! Feel free to ask me anything else you want! 🙏
The most attractive thing to me about the keys is that they are very long from the hinge point. I have an Arturia KeyLab mkII, which is functionally excellent, and I like the lightness of the action. The keys are a bit floppy, side to side, but that’s not a problem in practice. The keys clatter, when played, and that’s obnoxious when playing quietly, but not a deal-breaker. The big issue is that the keys are short to the hinge point. Play deep into the keys and they are very stiff. Play at the end of a black key, and it’s fine. Also, the black key tops are narrow and easy to slip off of with dry, winter hands. I’m finding that I need to relearn my technique very deliberately. Like many, I tend to just play without thinking about fine details. I’m now practicing scales where I hit the key centers directly down near the edge of the black keys. It helps, but I certainly don’t need to do that on my Kawaii VPC1. What a great piano action! The problem is that no recent MIDI controller has great synth keys. I loved my Juno 60 feel, but I don’t want an aging keyboard. Modern controllers fight on price, and some marketing genius ruined synths by upselling “semi-weighted.” So, can you do an organ palm gliss smoothly on the Osmose? Or does it catch the hand or cause other issues? I saw that Jordan Rudess can play quickly on the Osmose, but I’m not sure if the keyboard is working with him, or if he’s overcoming it. But it can be done!
I can definitely say that the Osmose’s keyboard is not something else on the market - that don’t necessarily mean better. You can do some palm gloss smoothly although the keys are not that “springy” as on a more traditional keyboard. Jordan Rudess can surely play fast on anything that has keys so I’m not sure he can be referenced hahaha In my opinion, the Osmose excels at slower, more cinematic and expressive playing but with some practice it can do anything you want it to do. And the highlight is the key bends and the poly after touch. If those two things matter to you, it’s the best MIDI keyboard right now. If they don’t and you also not plan to use it as a standalone synth, I think you can find more affordable options! If you have the budget though, it’s worth the investment!
Thanks! As cool as it is, it’s probably not what I’m looking for. I found a cool minimalist controller with nice keys at Extra Deluxe Mfg. - The Sixty-One. Since I do all of the heavy lifting in the computer, all-keys-no-sounds is just what I need. For gestures, I use expression pedals and a breath controller. Not as nice as the Osmose, but still hands-free.
Not a fan of the naming of all the function buttons on the medieval one. Plus, you cant remove the factory samples, so theres less space for importing your own samples. You can just import the medieval sounds if you want to.
Yeah the naming can be annoying at times.. I'm pretty confident that TE will allow us to delete the Medieval samples at some point so then it will have twice the storage which will be a huge plus compared to the K.O. II!
@@Sinesquares yeah, you'd think so but there's obvious software updates for the KO2 that they could do but haven't touched it since April, so I'm weary. That would be a huge advantage. But it seems like the samples on medieval are very integral to the branding of the thing, and the reason why it has more total storage could be because they don't plan on letting you wipe it.
@ Yeah maybe that the case too.. We’ll wait and see!
the reduction and the raw process learned me so much about music. i can make any beat with it. i hooked up with a ipad. sample from slice and it rocks. combined with my meris pedals. ohhh my god. it inspire me every day. i still have the og op-1 and it works now for 11 years…it s not cheap but if you want becoming a better musician buy it. you have to get better to get good sounds of it and this is the magic…
It's the kind of gear that if you click with it, it's absolutely amazing! Maybe not everyone clicks with its workflow(s) but when this happens it's unbeatable!
@ there is a video of skerry vibes on youtube with the op-xy and he figured out how to layer synthsounds. really promising. check it out.
@ Just watched it! Sounds amazing! I’ve been doing something quite similar on the OP-1 for a while now. You can play a C note and record it to Tape, then do that again with any number of synths you want and Resample it! So you end up with a multi-layered sound you can play with the Synth Sampler!!
Doesn’t even have aftertouch, fail
@@theinvisibleman-e8v At this price point with all these features, it was expected.. The pads have poly after touch but it’s not the same I agree
It's quite brilliant actually. The Ableton and Cubase integration is stellar.
I doubt you even care; you're just parroting what everyone says.
@@autofocus4556 If you refer to me, I don’t really care for aftertouch since I have the Osmose which is the best for poly aftertouch. But for like 80% of the sounds I don’t really need a keyboard with Aftertouch.. If you are at a point where you definitely need AT, you should definitely look at other options I guess
@@Sinesquares same here. I have a Studiologic SL for after touch. The poly after touch on the MK4 is more than acceptable for the price. It's such a good addition to my desk setup.
I just ordered the mk4. So excited to get it! Great review

@@klaragro7591 Thank you so much! What kind of DAW are you using? Do you want to control plugins or hardware too?
Ive still got our old midi keyboard, its awesome with Bitwig! So Ive just found out.
@@Complexautist It’s absolutely fine! Served me so well over the years!
Wonderful review! I love my Osmose and using Noisy 2 is a great option (it's really nice) until the new editor comes out.
@@marchellner Thank you so much!! Yeah, Noisy 2 definitely cures the itch for some MPE sound design! It’s a great plugin!
Great video, MK4 looks awesome - thanks a lot for your review!
@@shapeshifta3431 Thank you so much my friend! 🤘 It is indeed awesome!
Still love it! It's the perfect nightshift companion. I wish they released more features sooner. Instead they are stretching it out over 10 years I assume. Nevertheless it's extremely fun and at times frustrating, but no reason to sell it like I did with the 404 MK2. I just couldn't gel with that one. Btw, isn't there a app that allows you to add sample to the keys?
Op1F truly the best synth for the money in my opinion, those who say they don’t understand it have never owned one. it’s EXTREMELY versatile it is not just a synth. there’s a reason after 14 years no one has made anything that comes close to it. that’s funny you mentioned the fire, if my place ever caught fire it’d also be the first thing I’d grab 😂
Let’s hope none of our studios gets burned to the ground 😂 And it’s true that if you never use an OP-1, you cannot understand how great it is!
@ I don’t think it’s meant to create full fledged songs, but I’ve seen some people like @novak the enjoyer* make incredible professional sounding songs, but even he says it’s a nightmare hahah.
@ Oh yeah Novak makes some magic with the OP-1!! It’s way too much of a hustle to record a full song on it.. I can’t find a reason to try it unless you wanna test your creativity and patience lol
Saying it’s the best synth for the money is comical. The synth engines are mediocre at best for the price tag. Its DAW is cumbersome and its effects are quirky. It’s not worth it in any individual aspect. It’s “worth” comes from the whole package and beautiful design. I own the OP-1 and acknowledge its charm but it’s truly not a practical instrument.
I have it for a good month... What I like about it: It's magnificent battery life. Finally a device where you don't have to be scared to use it extensively. It's portability is great. The tape types are very usefull, the sampler is very good. Sound quality is professional. The microphone is supergood, and sensitive. What I am scared about: the buttons. Like with all things, these guys are your input, and I hope the build quality is good enough for the price, and hope they will be reliable. Downsides: The price... Payed 1500 for it second hand, and the colour. White. White will get dirty, and this is a thing you won't put in a bath of soap... All by all, a nice thing to own, very very usable...
Oh yes, the battery life is mind blowing! Also, about the white, I used to buy a lot of white synths and my experience is definitely bad.. I’ve cleaned so many white knobs in my life lol… Let’s hope the material on the OP-1 stays clean for years 🤞
The most expensive toy ever. I never understood why people buy them and have never heard any music that is not like a demo from it. Sorry, just my take 😅
Any take is welcome ;) In my opinion, the OP-1 is not special because of its sound (although you can make it sound really good). It's an enabler for creating music without getting carried away by the sound design and endless features other instruments have. Is it expensive? Yeah, it is... But if it's within your budget, there are so many things to love about it that you cannot find anywhere else.
I get why people call it a toy, especially those who have never owned one. As far as music you have never heard sound like a demo, I have a friend with five Grammys and 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify. He keeps it velcro-ed in the center of a $94K vintage Neve console. It's on every song using just the presets. Even if it's not for me (or you), I can assure you people use it as a studio tool. He convinced me to buy one, and I could never part with it.
@@elementlab41 to each their own 🙂 Who’s your friend?
@@dionysis_ I wasn’t trying to name drop, but you can hear it on his new EP, Hot Sun Cool Shroud. It’s in a band context, but you can get an idea. I was just trying to point out professional musicians use an OP1 more than a toy. I’m just a wannabe, but the op1f has brought me more joy (and frustration) than I can recall.
@@elementlab41 Nothing wrong with dropping a name if it is relevant 😁 Listening to it now, quite nice. I think you are making a valid point. In the end it is a tool and if you can make good music with it that's all that matters. I was thinking about it more as its sound being the dominant one, as in making a piece solely on it or at least mostly with it. That is where I just don't hear the quality I would (personally) need. But yeah my comment was a bit too generalised you are right 🙂
2 grand for any digital gear is just .. questionable imo
Totally get your point but it is what is I guess 😬🤣 150€ for a plugin for example is also questionable.. Since it’s not water, food, etc we’re all good ☺️

Interesting to learn that the pedal is meant to be landscape or sideways. Half of it looks like it should be vertical but the knobs were set to be horizontal, (4:25) seeing as 12 oclock is where it is. Also the where the "top jacks" are.
Yeah, thinking if the knobs’ range I guess it’s meant to be used sideways.. Although Ive seen lots of people having it vertical on a pedalboard. Whatever works for you I guess 🤷🏻♂️😉

I definitely love this synth, too. However, how do you feel about the Haken editor? :D It's pretty... Unintuitive. lol
Hehe I mentioned it at some point 24:53 Yeah the Haken Editor is the opposite of intuitive lol.. Even if you’re experienced, it requires a lot of reading and time to make a basic patch.. I gave up 😂 Good thing is that Expressive E is working on a much more user friendly version of this 😉
