Build Connection by Listening Effectively and Empathically
When it comes to building connection, one area I have had to work on incredibly hard is improving how I listen. Listening is a strange skill because it feels like improving it is just listening more, but actually, there are ways to drastically improve the connection between you and the other person when they are talking to you. In this video, I share 4 ways to listen more effectively and empathically so that the person talking doesn’t feel judged but instead feels heard and understood.

    Yesterday I had a panic attack due to my anxiety. It was horrible. 😢it feels real

  • @disneyfan9134
    @disneyfan9134 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I had a friend of mine who has horrible anxiety and panic attacks. When I first met her in 2017 at our cognitive group therapy, she would tell stories about how hard it has been to cope with her anxieties and at that moment, she got so emotional about telling her story. After she finished her story, we all got her permission to give her positive feedback and I was the first to ask her to give her a hug which she said yes and I was crying with her because I was showing compassion and empathy towards her. I genuinely felt her pain. For I too, struggled with anxiety and depression. Then a year later after being laid off from my first job for over a year, I have autism and I was struggling to find employment, anxiety and depression. One day, I’d reached out to her by text and we texted each other back and forth about how we got to see the Grinch 2018 in theatres and what we thought of it. Plus we then, opened up about our struggles with feelings of insecurity, depression, anxiety, worthlessness, etc and I told her how I feel like I never get a chance to help people with their struggles because I feel like they don’t give me a chance to try and she said that I help more people than I realized and that at group therapy, I legitimately helped her through her hard times. And over the next couple of years, we started getting to know each other more and more and become very close friends, plus I’ve helped to encourage her to take her new anti anxiety pills even though she was very scared to take them for fear of overdosing on them. So I offered to come over to her house for emotional support and I told her that I still care about her, that I love her, that I support her and that I want to make her feel safe and loved and just cheered and encourage her on. She got up the courage to take the pills and she was so overwhelmed that she ran into my arms in a panic and just cried her eyes out. I comforted her, telling her how very proud I was of her and that everything’s going to be okay and she started to calm down. I will never forget the words she said to me were “I really don’t know what I would do without you” and it made me cried happy tears because I’ve been waiting to hear those words from someone for so long and that for the very first time, I felt like I’ve actually helped someone I loved who really needed me for support and comfort and it meant A LOT to me. Now these days, I don’t get to hear much from her or get texts from her much these days due to her busy job as a ultrasound technician and other things but she knows that if she ever needed me for some comforting words and positive reassurance, I’m always a text away even she doesn’t always text me back 100% of the time. Despite her lack of texts and lack of replies, I’ll always be her friend and I’ll always love and care about her no matter what. And even if we are going our separate ways, I’ll never forget how much of a positive impact she had in my life and how she inspired me to learn how to love myself and be a better friend. So I have absolutely no regrets about my friendship with her because I love her more like a sister and I owe her my life for how she gave me a chance to help her. 😊

    One interesting counter-note: when my wife feels overwhelmed by anxiety, she actually *hates* being asked "What do you need?" Instead, she just wants to be held and told, "I'm here with you." I suspect there's a clear reason for this: in general in life, she's already keenly aware of what she needs in every situation, and trusts herself to articulate it. In moments of anxiety, she just wants to feel like she doesn't have to think or articulate anything, but rather just wants to be 100% taken care of. She will articulate if she needs something different. In a way though, this is also a form of answering the question, "What do they need?" but just by knowing the person ahead of time :)

    I’m sorry, I don’t think by labeling problems is a good idea at all. The person who is trying to help a person with anxiety should just listen. Labeling makes it worse. My sister labeled one thing that I love to do, might be the cause for my anxiety, and that made me even more upset.

  • @EB-dm9fw
    @EB-dm9fw ปีที่แล้ว

    My favorite sister was trying to help me bringing all sorts of reasons why I had anxiety, instead of helping me, she became one of my problem. She kept calling me once I told her I feel fine and enjoying my time vacationing with my husband and kids. She kept calling me, and I told her off not to ever mention anxiety and even not to send me videos. She took it hard and send me not nice note, and w don’t talk ever since. I don’t care!

    This is such a helpful video when trying to help someone with depression or anxiety.Asking them what happened is a brilliant question because of course for every effect there is a cause. So in a lot of cases it will get to the root of the problem I would think .Well done

    My partner suffers with severe anxiety and panic attacks and it gets to the point she needs to be hospitalised and I try to comfort and be there for her as best I can but most of the time I don't even know what to do, I always seem to say or do the wrong things to help her through it and it sets her off off worse sometimes when all I want to do is be there for her so I appreciate this information and I will try and apply these techniques next time it happens thank you!!!
