We'll talk as long as you let us. Be honest and end the conversation. It's a new concept for people concerned about PC-ness. I'm curious why you didn't do your homework before relocating? We don't like pettiness, whining and complaining. All these issues seem to point to unpreparedness. All states have irresponsible people. Most of us love Huntsville.

You left out rattle snakes, especially in the owens cross roads and new hope area. My daughter killed two the other day in a subdivision, not to mention lots of deer crossing roads, especially during hunting season. As far as driving goes if its raining drivers here seem to think they need to drive faster don't ask me why they all ofva sudden think their on a ractrack but they do. On the flip side, yes, most of the people are very nice here. This guy is pretty much nailed exactly what living in Huntsville, Alabama, is like . I lived in Huntsville back in the 70s, and it's nothing like it used to be. It's almost like living in Birmingham, Alabama, these days, but still not quit as bad as that area . But like I said, I lived in Huntsville before it grew as big as it is now. But there's good and bad anywhere you go and even though it's not the same as it was back in the day I'd have to say it's better than a lot of places

  • @meriwilbourn7166

The water in owens cross roads Alabama is absolutely HORRIBLE! IT doesn't take long at all for the calcium and lime and whatever else is in that water to start messing with your plumbing . Your water pressure is almost non existent because of the calcium and lime that builds up . Not to mention if you don't filter your water some how it will destroy a coffee maker and about anything else you use it in . I absolutely don't recommend drinking the water in this area or using it in any appliance without first having a filter system of some sort . I'd also say get ready to not only replace your facets but your water pipes as well .

I have been here for 17 years. I will say the city has grown rapidly and the amount of apartments is INSANE. Also, the city is great to raise a family in and retire IF you are in engineering or IT. This is VERY important if you do not have government clearance and don't qualify to work on the arsenal. Other than these fields you are looking at working at a plant or warehouse, I'm talking Costco to Toyota , Amazon, Target fulfillment etc. The water is absolute TRASH, that is very true, and the traffic has become bad, which is still a fairly new issue. I also think it important to note, that this is STILL the south, and racism is alive and well. You will experience it at some point if you are a minority, no escaping that. Obviously the further down south you go in Alabama the worse it gets, but Huntsville is NOT immune to that, at all. Plenty of fine folks down here, but still needs to be stated. You need to also take into consideration that the policies and government down here is that of a red state. This will have an impact on quality of life, regardless of what side of the aisle you are on, do your research before making the move.

    1. Hot and humid 2. Big roaches 3. No public transportation 4. Still have two rows streets , bad roads 5. Bad traffic 6. High taxes 7. Limits to home business , can not have home business or business in residential area 8 overrated schools 9. Buttload of storage units car wash businesses and banks 10. If you are not engineer or IT, your paycheck will not exceed $18 hourly rate --with job experience. Alabama’s official minimum wage is $7.25 with median house price $300+ 11. Limited good medical care.

I live in Huntsville AL and travel the world. Chatty southern is true. See it a lot in my family. But in today cultural society where people don't know how to have a conversation with anyone more. We need more of this. Public transportation over the US is trash compared to everywhere else in the world. Tap Water across the US is pretty much the same, there is several places outside of the US that have better tap and places that have worse. Construction is across the world and usually the sign of progress and is always an inconvenience for anyone, everywhere. Redstone and a military base that is a testing facility, while complaining about a loud boom once in a while makes you sound like a bitch. Uninsured drivers are everywhere in the US, most commonly by illegal immigrants or people in poverty. Mom and Pop shops being closed on Sunday is a big part of what makes the South but is slowly dying out by corporate America that is slowly destroying society as a whole. Tornadoes is part of living here for sure. Pollen is definitely bad here for people with allergy issues. I will give you poor nightlife. Huntsville has never had a good night life but been better for raising family and children. July and August is usually Hot and Humid for sure. Overall sounds like you didn't do your own research before moving here. And you are correct, Huntsville is not for everyone. There is a lot of positives to Huntsville and like everything in life. There is Pros and Cons to everything.

Re. The weather… While there have been some tornados in the city limits, they are rare. You are far more likely to get hit if you live in the areas surrounding the city, especially to the West or North of the city. The TN river to the South and Monte Sano mountain to the East creates a kind of barrier that causes weather systems to break up and go around us. It is not uncommon for the weather forecasters to predict severe weather for the area and the city doesn’t see a drop of rain while the outer areas get hammered. The same thing happens with snow. Surrounding areas might get 2-3 inches and we get nothing. Also, the weather folks here have a tendency to do the “Chicken Little” thing and get everyone wound up so the schools and the Arsenal often close early then nothing happens. Probably the biggest drawback to living here at this time is that the city is going through a massive growth spurt and the economy is highly influenced by the high tech and military industry’s. This has created a high cost of living that makes it very difficult for people to survive on lower wage jobs. That being said, if you are in the construction industry you will not have a hard time finding a job as they are building like crazy both in the city and on the Arsenal.

Yes, you did miss a few. 1) The state is vehemently against solar power. 2) Those accursed street lights; if it's nighttime, or it rains, beware; the glare will make everything nearly impossible to make out. 3) There's a sales tax on food; no joke. 4) Blind spots; if you drive, prepare for all sorts of nasty turns where you can't see incoming cars from either direction; it's the only state where it's not illegal. 5) Macho, macho man! Prepare for toxic masculinity, and lots of it.

The contractors save most jobs for people they know. This issue leaves those who are capable of doing the job jobless. The insects are very different and aggressive... Most restaurants are horrible. For example, Smoothie King smoothies taste like juices. Poor consumer quality store items. The water stonk and it's hard. I wash my hair with bottled water. Extremely quiet is the best thing about Huntsville.

You went the wrong way after Green Mountain. The actual heart of OCR is not Hampton Cove(which is a subdivision) There is alot of countryside in OCR aside from all of the new subdivisions and apartments that are actually running out the natives. The power grid continues to get weakened here as more subdivisions and apartments keep coming in. We have never had rolling blackouts until they started building all of this. It's so annoying when you are trying to cook for the holidays, etc. You also didn't show the actual OCR Elementary School and all natives know that the OCR Elementary School kids move to New Hope Middle and High School. Also if you are trying to find Governors Ave. It is actually called Governors Drive. From the OCR area it is also called Monte Sano mountain.

I moved to Athens, AL 19 1/2 years ago for a job relocation. I'm glad I picked Athens / East Limestone County when I did. It was affordable and basically in the middle of Decatur and Huntsville. Cotton and corn fields are finally making way for subdivisions and I'm getting ready to move out of state because of the growth. I agree with you about inspections. I would recommend at least two inspections in East Limestone homes. There are no regulations other than the weak state ones so you really have to be careful. The issue with roads and infrastructure is that subdivisions are put up before infra is expanded. Bad policy. RE: your nail story and your times, I just ran through a pile of fresh paint on the Greenbriar Parkway and it coated the wheel wells and sides of my truck. Grrr. If you are out in the county, you'll feel minor earthquakes from the limestone quarries. Survey the area you plan to move. The small community of Belle Mina is fighting a new quarry at the moment. Tennessee being so close would be a good option as a state income tax free option vs. Alabama. Many drivers are irresponsible in this state / area without inspections. They will literally drive until the belts show through the tires. When it rains, they are the ones in the ditch. Steer clear of houses on septic because of the rain. I made this gamble and it will bite you when the ground gets saturated.

I love Huntsville, but I liked it better before you and 40,000 others moved here. It was better in 2013.

Just move here, and i feel you people, move from Miami, i used to love my city, and the same back in 2013 and back in the 80s whats can i say .. my city now is overcrowded, and if you think moving here is not that good!! Try moving into Miami😂😂😂😂 then you will say is bad😂😂 well Miami has good water , probably one of other good things we still have back home, termites ?? I know them very well, coming from Fl, we have all kinds od insects n animals , so to the new move ins, lets just try to be respectful, to all people here, and let just try to follow rules here, and good luck to all.
