The largest river in Moldova is the Dniester. Even the ancient Greeks and Romans knew it and called it Tiras. In the Middle Ages, a trade route from Lviv to Crimea and Turkey ran along it. The majestic fortresses built on the banks of the river are still preserved today in Khotin, Soroki, Bender, Belgorod-Dnestrovsky.
The Dniester begins in the Carpathians at an altitude of 759 m above sea level from springs on the northwestern slope of Mount Rozluch; it flows 700 km across Ukraine and about 660 km across Moldova. Its annual flow averages 10 cubic kilometers; this is 5 times less than that of the Dniester.
The Dniester, like all rivers originating in the mountains, is a capricious river. If heavy snows fall in the Carpathians, the Dniester will flood in its lower reaches in spring - usually as early as the end of March.
