A Bit Twisted

This is my journey into learning how to spin Flax and make linen. It started when I purchased a spinning wheel for my Daughter. I found a few articles about Flax and Linen and thought that was so cool. I decided to buy my own spinning wheel because I would after all need to know how to spin Flax into thread for weaving. Into the garden went some flax. With that I needed to learn to spin. So what better way than to spin some wool. Well, down another rabbit hole. Purchased some raw dirty fleece and learned how to process that into spin ready fiber. All the while playing with the wheel and struggling to get some good yarn. Finally, I broke through the barrier and was able to spin. It just kept getting better and better. I played also with natural dye on a couple small batches of wool. It has become a fun project and I fully intend to master the wheel and loom to make Linen Fabric. It is a seed to finished product project. Find/Contact Me: naturesyarn naturesfiber@gmail.com
Double Drive Spinning Wheel Tension Adjustment
How I set my Double Drive Spinning Wheel Tension before I start a project. It is rather simple and is similar for any wheel. No need for added grip on your drive band. Don’t use bees wax. It can and will come off onto your whorl and become gummy. That is not needed. Be sure your flyer bushings are perpendicular to your flyer and lightly oiled so they don’t bind. Check for binding by spinning the flyer by hand to ensure it rotates smoothly.

Rack Drying Jacob Wool Locks
มุมมอง 88วันที่ผ่านมา
Im taking my washed Jacob Wool Locks and putting them on my drying racks I use for drying and sorting our English Walnuts. I purchased them used many years ago and we made a few tall saw horses and put the horse legs onto a some super long 2x6 lumber and then set the racks on top for easy sorting access to sort and let air dry. So why not use them for drying out clean washed wool locks. Being t...
Andean Ply Technique
มุมมอง 252วันที่ผ่านมา
Showing the process of Andean Ply so you can ply samples of yarn you spin without having to double up on bobbins and such. Small samples are great to test yarn gauge and consistency. Once done you should also label them to keep track of them. Breed and gauge of finished yarn and date.
Ashford Treadle, Park, Draft & Repeat

A technique to try for those totally new to spinning and having trouble with over twisting and difficulty drafting. It is similar park and draft for those learning drop spindle spinning.
Ashford Scotch Tension Adjustment
มุมมอง 94วันที่ผ่านมา
Here I am showing how I set my tension on my Ashford Scotch Tension Wheel. I use the basic technique on any wheel be it Scotch Tension or Flyer Tension or Double Drive. Wheels with the stretchy drive bands don’t adjust but which ever can adjust I start with zero tension and bring tension into the part to get the right setting.
Ashford Traditional Doube Drive

Vintage Ashford Traveller Overview
มุมมอง 14114 วันที่ผ่านมา
Just rescued this wheel yesterday 12-31-24. The last day of the year. It is an odd ball because of the flyer and how the flyer is attached to the uprights. The hooks are also on opposing sides from most Ashford Wheels I’ve seen here in the US. The flyer is a different design as well. Something I’ve not yet seen either. The upright bushings are not the same because the one on the far upright wit...
Ashford Traditional Single Whorl
มุมมอง 17814 วันที่ผ่านมา
Showing you can spin thin and make a super nice three ply fingering weight yarn from a vintage Ashford Traditional with only a single whorl. With your settings correct the wheel will do the job nicely. When plying you can measure out your bobbin in 3rds onto three spools or you can do chain plying. So don’t let others tell you that you need bells as whistles on your wheel. If you can do this on...
Vintage Ashford Traditional

A demo of a Vintage Ashford Traditional Single Drive Scotch Tension Wheel. The wheel is an early Ashford but still within the age after they switched from leather flyer bushings to graphite impregnated nylon bushings. The new bushings are solid and strong and will last the life of the wheel if taken care of within reason. Nylon is very durable. The wheel is well balanced and spins very well. Th...
Cotton Spinning on DD Wheel
มุมมอง 14128 วันที่ผ่านมา
Trying out spinning cotton on my DD wheel with a triple drive band setup. It helps tame the uptake but you still need to have good drafting techniques. The main thing the triple drive band does is tame the uptake and helps prevent yanking of the fibers as you treadle. A simple help for those with DD wheels that have double or triple grove whorls.
Ashford Traveller with Triple Drive Band and Woolee Winder
มุมมอง 17528 วันที่ผ่านมา
A demonstration of spinning flax on my Ashford Traveller with a Double Drive Woolee Winder but stringing up the wheel with a triple drive band where one is on the bobbin and two are on different grooves on the whorl. It helps temper the draw of the thread and for the woolee winder it quiets the beast a bit more than usual. I can back off on my tension and still get good grip on the whorl becaus...
Triple Drive on a Double Drive Wheel
มุมมอง 30328 วันที่ผ่านมา
A test to see how thin I can go with a triple drive setup on my double drive wheel. The whorl has two groves. One small and the other large. Many of them have groves nearly the same size. This one is very different in size and I found that the uptake was smoothed out and did not have the pulsating effect of the treadle as I treadled the wheel. The pulsing is most noticed when spinning super lac...
Finnish Spinning Wheel Reproduction

This is a quick demo of my Finnish Spinning Wheel. A reproduction built in the 70’s. The wheel has a slight wobble but does not affect the use of the wheel.
hello! where is the stand that your distaff is on from? seeking something similar
Just a cheap photography light stand. There are some you can get on Amazon for 20 or less but most are more than 20. I’d suggest looking on FB Market Place locally to you for someone selling one cheap for under $15 bucks or even less before doing the Amazon thing. They are out there. I like them because I can move them around and raise and lower them as the fibers get shorter.
🪡🪡🪡
Do you separate the colours or spin them as you come to them? Your wool looks good.
I blend the white in with the brown Some are different shades but overall the sameIm going to spin this up like I did my last Jacob and Romney. Fingering 2 ply. I comb my fibers then use the short bits that remain from combing to make carded rolags. Rolags are the lesser quality fibers. Still usable..
Nice
Just wanted to thank you again for the zoom lesson last evening! My wife also thanks you because home life is much better when I’m not going around the house grumbling because my spinning life isn’t going well!😂
You are both welcome. It is also a great way to meet folks interested in this craft that live so far away. Not so far with zoom.
New friend here, this is really neat.
Excellent video
Very interesting
This is really interesting!
My ashford plays like that yep😊 My cpw doesn’t slip but my ashford does and that’s ok. They speak differently but both are fluent in their native language. 🎉
I just love the Ashford Traditional. Last year, I bought a second-hand, single drive Tradi for a few hundred bucks, and I took it to my daughter's apartment. She was spinning on an Ashford e-spinner, and had no interest in a treadle wheel... Until she tried the Ashford Traditional. She kept the wheel, and then I found more recent, convertible single to double drive. I can work with both single and double drive, but I do prefer double drive. I think those little wheels are super cute, and quite compact for a saxony style wheel. My daughter's apartment is tiny, she doesn't even have a proper living room, yet she still manages to have room for her wheel.
You inspired me to try the triple drive on my vintage Traveller. It has a jumbo flyer set up on it. It seems to be a much smoother spin now. I have a CPW with the triple drive that I love. I had in the past a couple of older double drive wheels that I set up as triple drive. I am a “believer”. 😊
Cool. It really does temper the draw. So for my DD Ashfords I’ll be keeping the triple drive on. Because if I decide I want scotch tension I can put all on one whorl and if I want DD I can put two on one and on the other. I did find out that if you put them all on one and go back to triple drive the three may get a little tangled but if you work it easily you will get them to all sit right again on the wheel. So mostly I’ll leave them triple as going double makes no sense.
I have two spinning wheels, both castle style, one definitely antique,as shes older than me and im 60, the other im unsure of age wise tho i know her maker left the country in the 70s so at the youngest shes 50 and is most likely older. Theyre both made here in NZ by two different makers and are both set up with doubledrive, tho they both have the option for scotch tension and i might change one over at some stage, but for the moment im happy with them as they are. I love my old wheels.....and they can spin pretty much anything other than ridiculously bulky....thats what my floor spindle is for anyway.
Lovely demo. I have had the same single drive wheel for over 40 years. I came back to spinning in 2015 and there were so many fancy wheels around but Flossy (what I named my wheel) works just fine for me. I did end up getting more wheels, but they are all different variations by the maker of my original. All are single drive.
Hey, I think just read your Facebook post lmfao. I just joined that group. I'm completely new to this. Edit: you should also link this video in the comments of your post if you haven't.
I purchased a spinning wheel a few months ago because I want to learn to spin. I Wish there was a way I could send you a picture of it, some people say it looks like it's a display spinner, that it's not something that I can use for everyday spinning, but I've been spending on it. I would like to know what kind it is an approximately what year.
Go to my channel about page and you will find my email. You are welcome to send a photo but also let me know it is you and reference this video. I’ll gladly try to help.
Hello! Val sent me! New subscriber! Nice to meet you and thanks for all the great videos!!
Thanks. Glad she sent you. If you have any video suggestions let me know. Hope my videos can help.
Question, I have a spinning wheel like this, but it came with two different bands, and the hooks for the yarn are on the opposite side. Is there a reason for this?
The drive band should be one single band that can wrap around twice. This is called a double drive wheel and one band drives the flyer and the other the bobbin but at different speeds. When adjusted just right both are spinning together at the same time while twisting the yarn until you let loose a little then the yarn will be taken up and wrapped around the bobbin. The hooks depends upon where the wheel was made and makes no difference in how it all works. Hooks are hooks. I have wheels with odd arrangements of hooks and they all work the same. You can't use two separate drive bands on a Double Drive wheel. It must be one band long enough to wrap around twice.
Thin cotton twine works best for these wheels. I have multiple spools of cotton warp for the loom that works perfect for drive bands.
🧐🤔👌
I just ordered my cotton cards to help process the cotton I grew last year (flax won't grow in my climate) so glad to see your set up
I'm just about to start delving into the cotton side of spinning xx
I still mostly spin flax. It is my favorite fiber.
I need to find a candidate among my herd and join the fun!
Very nice!
Will show my husband and ask him for his mechanical engineering explanation.
Please do and please post his explanation. I should also look into the engineering reasons why it works. Science rocks.
Definitely seeing the change in your spin. Very cool. And I see your whorls are a bit different in size too.
I have three different whorls. The original ones are very similar in size. The other whorl is what you see on the wheel. One large and one very small. The other whorl has large but both are of similar size. So when I spin my flax I use that whorl.
Great demo Pete! This! Why didn’t we know this already?
Very interesting. I have an 1850ish wheel that has a whorl with double grooves. I need to give it a try.
Yes do and report back here with what you find. Remember you will need thin drive band material. A thin cotton should do fine.
I've found the soft clacking the bobbin and flyer make to be such a comforting sound. Almost ASMR. A boyfriend I had would fall asleep everytime I started spinning! Nice job with that wheel. It's a beauty!
Have you tried spinning it from the fold? Does making your fingers damp (like you do with flax) make for a better end product?
I see hat you said you'd do it next time. I was just wondering how it worked out?
@@tinadriskell4469 I have not spun Yucca from the fold but I presume it will be similar to flax so see no reason why it wouldn’t work. Since it is a much shorter fiber than flax it may be best to do it that way. Easier to handle. Ive spun long flax fibers from the fold successfully. Since it is a bast fiber I know using water to dampen the fibers will make for a better and stronger thread. I will eventually make some more yucca in a much larger quantity but for now Im just focusing on my flax and wool. It does take a bit of prep to process yucca fibers.
My neighbor dumped a double armful of yucca leaves in the trash. They are now in my bin retting. And my flower frig is on order. Great timing!
Very nice set up!
It was a welcome surprise. Woolee Winders are the best. :)
Nostalgia
you have kind of weird lighting. or are your arms purple.
LOL, No, my arms are not purple. I wasn’t too concerned about the color but Im guessing I was still not terrible good at color correction back then. I still don’t worry about that too much even today. I don’t have a video crew. Just me.
@@abittwisted dont worry about it mate. But it kinda did spring into my eyes.
This is how I braid my hair ;)
My wife had me braid her hair like this too and she really likes it. It is simple and quick to do. Looks good on long grey hair.
Thanks for the post . Much appreciated from nz. What is the advantage of it plz? Or is it just preference ? Cheers ❤ Pat . Ps what about plying??😊
Thanks for the spindle demo on your beautiful 30” Jensen wheel. I own a great wheel and a 24” Jensen and never thought to just plug the spindle into the Jensen orifice to learn to spin on a spindle. I will now do so! Do you own any other wheels other than the Jensen & the great wheel? Of course the Jensen is all you need. They are such beautiful instruments.
Thanks for sharing this! I can see it making a difference.
Thank you! I just picked up this exact one. I do not have a tension line and spring for it. I guess ordering that from ashford would be best, is there a way I could rig it up until I got it in the mail? Also, I've found pulling the yarn through the orifice to be quite tricky on this one!
Sure, get some string and a rubber band. I used a rubber band for years and a spring can be purchased at most hardware stores. Heavy fishing line works great if you have some. I don’t recommend using linen thread as it tends to stick to the wood bobbin. It can but is a pain. Fishing line is best. A spring from the hardware store so you don’t have to wait until Amazon delivers. Im sure you can find it on Amazon too but for the short term string and rubber band.
Heavy copper wire bent into a hook. You might get away with a metal cloths hanger to make one from too. A thin stiff metal wire and bend a hook into one end then use that. If you have a piece of hard copper wire like is used in home wiring you can use that which is what Ashford uses for their hooks. I happen to have some my self and I have made a few. I also have some stainless steel wire I make thin orifice hooks with as well. McGyver it.
Well, thanks for the show n tell! Back when they introduced it and I was curiouser, the only images were B&W photo reproductions in a magazine. Seems to do all it needs to. 🙂
I'm having a hard time trying to get the bobbin to catch my fiber. I'm new at this and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong? People tell me my bobbin is to big for my spinner and I don't know where to get one that will work with my spinner. Could you please help me if possible.
So first off you can send an email. My email can be found in the about section of this youtube channel and you can also find me at fb.me/naturesyarn which is my FB page. I will need photos of what you have to better help but off the top of my head from what you wrote Im guessing you need to properly attach your bobbin leader. You do need a good thin leader line to attach to the bobbin. This may be your issue. If not then I need photos of how you have your wheel setup. I’m happy to help but you need to send info. If I can’t I can direct you to someone who might or go find the answer for you. th-cam.com/video/4a-nDJugsVk/w-d-xo.html
So the grey fiber is not from mold but from the rust in the tank. The iron changed the color. I was happy to finally figure that one out.
So that's how they make those skeins of linen. Thanks for showing us.
Hi A Bit Twisted. I have a Nagy spinning wheel when I got lt it only came with two bobbins please help me find one more.
Not likely you will find one but there are a couple folks that can reproduce one for you. It wont fully match but it will be close and it will work.
That would be fine to have someone make a bobbin. Who do you recommend?
Do you sell your flax?
I haven’t sold any of my Flax. Im not sure how to price it and I think the value will be the cloth or clothing I make from it. There is a lot of work involved to get the flax to this point,. What would you be willing to pay? We can start there. You can DM me if you like. Im also over on FB at fb.me/naturesyarn
Beautiful flax!
I've never spun flax. Would certainly like to thio! Thank you 💗
Thanks. Fascinating
Amazing! I always wondered how to twist it. Thank you for sharing!
Excellent. Seems to me you need to be patient to adjust this wheel for the type of yarn you want
Yes, patience will help. Once you have the techniques down setting up will be quick as you know what you need.
I am wondering about chicory plant fiber? Have you ever tried it? It grows so tall, I thought it might be useful for cloth, but perhaps it is irritating. No one seems to use it that way.
Never knew chicory had usable fiber? If it is usable and coarse I’d use it for cordage and not clothing.
Just what I wanted to see!
