Russell's Farming & Repair
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 19 มี.ค. 2024
Hello my name is Brian and welcome to my journey of an Air Force veteran turned farmer. On this channel we'll build a farm from the ground up using antique equipment and yesterday's techniques. With a little luck and a whole lot of work, I hope to turn this old farm into a profitable all natural sunflower, and animal farm.
I also breathe new life into yesterday's tractors by running my own antique tractor repair and restoration business. So if you're interested in homesteading, farming, and antique tractors please subscribe!

Farming Sunflowers and learning how to cultivate
Join me as I try to figure out how to use a two row cultivator. This is my first time and there were a lot of lessons learned!

Your sunflowers are doing a lot better than the ones i planted in my garden
It's only by chance. I've another field that I spread manure on, it's extremely weedy
What kind of shape is the reat if that tractor in
Story with this 3000 is it blew a tire in the field and sat for a few months. Guy came back with new tires and it was stuck. So it sat awhile longer and then at some point it came to me. Had a lot of water damage in the motor and I'm still trying to deal with that
@@RussellsFarmingRepair I have never messed with tractors that have flood damage much in my area normally if there is a tractor with flood damage it is a wore out tractor that was abused for a long time so we don't fix them.
This one had a rain cap on the exhaust but there was a rust hole in the muffler. Story is, it blew a tire and by the time they bought a new tire the motor was stuck. Rainwater causes a lot of damage
@@RussellsFarmingRepair water does not mix well with mother's you should have seen the miter out of the 1586 when we bought it the motor ran we were told it had a spun bearing witch would be the knocking noise that it made and it turned out we had to take the front end, the frame, the radiator and then we took tbe moter and had another guy we know rebuild it he could only save the injection pump, ingector lines and i think there was a few other things to but it needed a new everything
That sounds like a major job lol. I try avoid things like that at all cost but every once in awhile it gets you
"I'd get it one piece at a time and it wouldn't cost me a dime" seems like a more fitting JC lyric for a car mechanic.
I hear ya. I post a lot of places and TH-cam never has the same music I picked in other apps. But that is definitely the version of this song that would fit this 🤘
I posted a yard tour video
Ours sat in a barn for over 10 years and my dad was gonna just give the dam thing away, said it didn’t run so me and my grandpa went out there put a little fuel and oil in with a battery and hot wired it and it started right up and drove on pretty dry hydraulics. Now I just need to replace the top hydraulic seal and put on the new generator. It was also the Diesel series from Belgium apparently
These older tractors are really resilient. A few of my tractors that I use everyday I bought really cheap in similar states. I like that they're easy to work on too
Do you think i should make a yard/equipment tour video for my channel
Yeah I think you should! The more videos the better and it'll be cool to see your place 👍
@@RussellsFarmingRepair ok I will post it in the next couple of weeks most likely
That thing looks nice
Thanks! You can tell I used a roller up close but it looks a lot better than it did!
@@RussellsFarmingRepair when we restored my dad's great uncles 190 allis Chalmers we used a cheap paint gun for most of it it turned out good
As long as you mix the paint right and it lays down it doesn't really matter how cheap the gun is. I'm about to paint a bunch of milk cans Allis orange and put wd45 stickers on them
@@RussellsFarmingRepair the gun we had was a used air powered one it did a good job although part of the tractor we used a brush and you can see a few spots where the paint ran we are also working on painting my great grampas 1586 international we have everything from the front of the cab forward done and we have the fenders and paet of the doors done but we are leaving the white paints as factory becouse it is in good shape
You should post a clip of it some time, I'd like to see that!
They got them hood decals on yesterdays tractors for $30
I better scoop some up! This thing might look new from 50 feet away!
@@RussellsFarmingRepair hell it just might put some shoe polish on the tires and slap some new decals on it 😂
😂😂😂 all the sudden we got big plans. Rattle can blue, shoe polish and paying absolutely no attention to the 36 power steering leaks
@@RussellsFarmingRepair power steering is for women and children anyway 😂
Ah my favorite verse from the book of John Wayne. 🙏🤣
Good job i use gas and oil mix works good too🎉
Thanks, I appreciate it. This one was my first and I used pb blaster with ATF. I tried to just pour it down the spark plug holes but after 2 weeks I decided to pull the head. Eventually I took the oil pan off too and found some rust on the main bearings. We'll see what this sounds like when it's running again
@RussellsFarmingRepair yeah just had to do that to my LS Swapped k20 the motor had water in it head off and got to it took less than 30 minutes with the head off to get it to turn then I put it back together works fine now despite what other thought this is what I was tought to do my father is master aviation tech and diesel so yeah passed down the goods I hope you get everything up to par and hope it gose good for you.
Thanks again, I hope with a little ball honing it runs alright. If I ever come across another tractor with a stuck motor I'll be more inclined to take the head off sooner. That's cool about your dad, I was aircraft maintenance in the Air Force.
Just make sure it’s not a diesel engine 😂 or you wash it good in diesel 😂
What you use ?
PB blaster and ATF. I eventually gave up and took the head off. Once the head was off I heated the pistons a few times with a propane torch and then added more pb blaster. After that I just kept the breaker bar in the crank puller and yanked both directions back and forth for a long time. When I got tired, I came back the next day and kept doing it. Eventually I noticed it was barely moving in both directions. So I kept going back and forth and then it finally spun completely over.
An entire week of soaking and rocking?! Dang. Mormons are different these days.
It's a whole new world!
Anyone see the face to the left haha
No I didn't see it!
I know 2 guys who have those around in my area one of the. The last time I saw it did not run and had a loader on it and the other one ran just fine they are both in good shape I think the running one was reatored
I like the old 800 series but I'll say these tractors are still very simple and pretty easy to work on. I hope to get this thing going again to see how it works 👍
@@RussellsFarmingRepair I don't get to mess with very much small stuff but I like them because they where built to work and they are easy to work on the smallest tractor I have worked on for a while is a m farmall although I am hoping to buy my great grampas m John Deere it was restored before he bought it but it has not been running for a few years bht it dies not need much work because he kept it in his garage in town after they retired
I did some work on an M farmall not to long ago. I couldn't believe how tall it was compared to a Ford. If you run those old tractors a few times a week they're incredibly reliable.
@@RussellsFarmingRepair older tractors are more reliable than brand new ones because the new ones you can't let them sit for more than 3 or 4 months otherwise they have def problems and if you wanted a m that just had a bunch of work done to we are thinking of selling ours and buying a super m
Man that’s a good looking jubilee and crop
Thank you, I chose good angles of the jubilee and crop 🤣. This is my first year so not all of the field looks so healthy and the jubilee was saved and painted with rattle cans last year. Runs beautifully though, it's my favorite tractor
@@RussellsFarmingRepair I can tell by your videos lol the jubilee is a real superstar.
That's a good point too! I didn't realize I used it so much more lol
Hard to beat a good running old tractor.
What area are you in that you can grow sun flowers on a larger scale I am in South Dakota and in my area we grow mainly corn and soybeans, and Alfalfa and grass for livestock feed
I heard the Dakota's are known for sunflowers. I'm in Ohio, which can have hot dry summers or hot wet summers. Kind of annoying when it comes to growing because every year is challenging
@@RussellsFarmingRepair I think there is a lot of sunflowers in north Dakota but with South Dakota the east part is corn and soybeans mainly with some cattle if you go out west there is a lot of wheat and if you go west river it is mostly cattle ground
That's pretty much what's grown here in eastern Ohio too. Cattle, corn and soy beans is what everyone grows. Every once in awhile you'll see a wheat field
@@RussellsFarmingRepair my area has a few giant dairys and there are a couple small dairys but there is a lot of smaller beef operations of round 100 cows for most and some are smaller
That's interesting, it's like you're describing my hometown and we're pretty far from each other!
You made that tractor look a lot better than it did before. It is better than we could have done it.
Thank you. It had been painted a later Massey Ferguson silver at some point. I'm glad to put the right color back on it. I'm self teaching myself right now and I'm glad it's working out
I wish we had one or 2 old fords like what you got but we dont really have a need for them becouse our operation is too big and we would not use one of them for much
They're really neat classic tractors but you're right, they can't compare to later big tractors. In doing about 10 acres this year and that's perfect. If I get bigger I'll be looking for more hp
@@RussellsFarmingRepair most of our tractors are 100-170 horse but we have one 1586 International that is turned up to 216 horse and be have a m farmall that we bought because it was cheap and there was other things on the same ouction that we wanted
I have my eye out for a Ford 5000 and a bigger disc. But that's an impressive line up you got there!
@@RussellsFarmingRepair my grandma has a 5000 Ford and a 8630 front wheel assist Ford power shift. I have never run the 5000 because my uncle keeps it in the mower to cut ditches for the township but the 8630 I have run and I really like it.
I'd love to have a day to play around with an 8630 lol. I use stuff so small that I can't even imagine what that would be like. Hopefully someday I can work my way up to that
I do it all the time!
It's the best medicine
Yep I need some seat time on my 8N
My 8n is definitely the best riding
Damn Ol 8N Ford 😂
Keep her going!
41hp loven it big ole 172, my jubilee has the 134, but I bought a block to fix that problem, some day it will make good power, with the big intake and carb it will be 46hp
My Jubilee was my first tractor. I rebuilt it and love it more than the rest but man that horsepower difference makes the jubilee hard to use
@@RussellsFarmingRepair mine has a 72" finish mower on the three point, and it works, mowed three and a half acres on two gallons of gas, I'm afraid the 172 will use more gas, but I did acquire a New Holland 1725, 29hp diesel, if that becomes useful for mowing im going to put in the bigger engine, just toys to me
That's very true, the jubilee uses a lot less gas than the 860. I'd love to have a diesel!
👍 Yep
Your rear tires are on backwards
They're just turned around to make the tractor wide enough to cultivate. The cultivator is pretty light so traction isn't a concern. When I'm done I just jack the tractor up and flip the tires back around and the tread faces the normal direction
Mine don’t like me either don’t feel bad
The last 5 minutes of the video disappeared. It might have something to do with I deleted the clips from my gopro while it was exporting to youtube. More lessons learned! Sorry Everyone
I have a squirrel that steals sunflower seeds from the wild bird feeder. Then it "plants" the seeds in flower pots. So I get seedling clusters like yours.
That's how I picked the bird seed I wanted to plant! I found a brand that would pop up sunflowers just like that and filled my planter with it lol
That a jubilee or 8 end
I have clips of both in here as well as a 860, 961 and 4000
Fuck the haters. Your doing great
If you don't have haters you must not be doing anything exciting 😂
Thank you!
This video hits me. I’m a year out from retirement, started my own company and have heard a lot of “you should’ve stayed in.” Already.
Man nothing prepared me for the mental battles after you get out. I wonder if I made the right choice constantly
Your farming with the equipment that my grandfather used when he came back from ww2 and bought with the GI bill
Some of it was my great grandfather's he bought new. Compared to the price of modern equipment it's so much more affordable. At the cost of a lot of maintenance hours and it takes skill to plant even straight rows. No auto steer!
Don’t let those damn tobacco worms eat your crop.
I hope not!
Adapt and overcome Soldier!!
Maximum effort!
What year is yours?
This is a 51. I'm painting it for a customer. I would love to own one
I’ve got a 53 myself
@@X601X_MoMo they seem like good tractors. The best feature over a Ford is that the hood opens!
Wish I could start a farm. Vet here too. Land is just so dang expensive!
It is, I don't own any of the land and have to rent it.
Inspiration sir
Thank you!
Stop crying rich boy. Your doing better than most of us.
😂
Where did you find land with a house and other structures for $5K?
It's way cheaper to rent than to buy land. The shop is the neighbors, I rent a stall in it too
That's awesome!
Put in that work man! Thank you for your service.
Much appreciated!
Those old tractors are far easier to repair than a new one.
News one your lucky if you can replace the light without needing someone to reset your computer after
Cheaper to buy and cheaper to fix. Just a lot of man hours in keeping them going
The farther from DEBT you are as a farmer, the better of a farmer you are.
It's a lot more manageable if you don't owe anyone money for sure
Fantastic work!
Thanks a lot!
This is literally my dream
Mine too. Hope it works out 🤞
Adam? ADAM- NOOO ADAM -best meme ever
Duck are great companions
They're a lot of fun and very gentle.
Typically less rust when new. Lol My grandfather had this set up for many years.
Most definitely less rust 🤣 I'm using a lot of my great grandpa's original equipment he bought new with his 8N lol
I enjoy being in my garden. Life is too short to be miserable.
I agree completely
done some stupid stuff with those tractors lol
Sometimes you find yourself in those situations 😁
Oh what id do to get a good old tractor like this one ford did…my gramps sold the one we had cause we couldn’t find parts to fix it ..things are mean machines for field work
This 8N probably sat for 20 years outside before I got it. It took a lot of work but it's finally running good. It's happy pulling the disc that's for sure!
