Scout Training Series | Broncing and Pain Issues
🎥 To watch Scouts dissection findings subscribe to my website www.amandawilsontraining.co.nz 🎥
Scout's training series has been uploaded and it's a fascinating watch! We could never have expected the findings we found, but they were certainly enough to have made him a very miserable horse.
Putting him down was not an easy decision, I get very emotionally attached to my horses and I was so worried that we would open him up and find nothing wrong, or worse, find something wrong that I could have fixed.
Yet deep down, I felt that despite my best efforts, he was suffering. I'd had him well checked over by professionals, and had put him through a short training series but although he improved a lot in that time, there was no true relaxation in his work and his pain eye continued to persist; a classic symptom of something far greater going on beneath the surface.
So I made the decision and had him put down, and I cried through his passing and the beginning of his dissection. But as we started to find problems, that grief started to change to relief because I realised how much discomfort he must have been in.
I believe that we can help so many horses through good care and training, but there are some horses that cannot be fixed. It's a hard reality but it is important to understand. Trying to 'train' out issues, or allowing a horse to suffer, even in retirement, is not fair on the horse. Sometimes, a hard choice has to be made; it's not easy but as owners we need to make them. As they say, there is a far worse fate than death.
On my farm, I have three of my young horses retired from paddock injuries, who are the opposite to Scout. They have bright eyes, are safe to handle and they absolutely love hooning around the paddock and play fighting. And so they will stay in retirement, because I believe they are super happy. But even in the paddock away from humans, Scout was always hyper-vigilant and was never able to let down and enjoy his life.
In order to make these tough choices, we need to understand horse behaviour - there are obvious signs between a happy horse and an unhappy one. If we can help the unhappy ones become happy, then we should do everything in our power to do so.
Having them ulcer scoped, seen by a chiropractor or body worker, blood tested, put on toxin binders for at least four weeks, x-rayed by vets, seen by a reputable dentist and given six months off (time heals a lot of problems) should be the first boxes that we have ticked. If things still continue to persist, I highly recommend getting veterinary advice on what action to take next.
Scouts training series is available on www.amandawilsontraining.co.nz. I have several more training series coming in the next year consisting of more case studies and behavioural issues which will be super interesting to watch.

Oslo's Foal Training is All Done!
มุมมอง 3.4K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Oslo has completed his foal training and received a 10/10 for improvement after a 3/10 for initial behaviour, so wins allround! This little guy is such a character. For me it's super important that I don't shut down his personality, but I do need to create boundaries for him because he can be quite colty. With consistency, this behaviour should hone down considerably, though I think he will nee...

One of the horses I work with in my www.amandawilsontraining.co.nz series is Paris, a superb young filly by Columbus VWNZ x KG Olympia. This mare has all the makings of a top sport horse and also the nature to become a dream, forever type of horse. For her first year of life, she enjoyed living out in a large family band and had very limited interactions with me, other than to trim her feet and...
Plot Change to the Season Ahead!

So yesterday I had Fattori accessed by my vet because, after her last competition, I felt like something was a bit off. She didn't have any behavioural issues but was struggling with her distances which isn't normal for her. Sure enough, she's injured her right front leg and will need several months of time off and rehab. Interestingly, after having her checked over by a chiropractor I had an a...

Dealing with Competition Nerves!
มุมมอง 445ปีที่แล้ว
I used to struggle so badly with competition nerves but I learnt a few tricks that really helped a lot. The last thing you want to do is take adverse emotions into the ring with you, you've got to learn to separate yourself from them and focus on the job at hand, or else it just becomes too overwhelming and unenjoyable! The rider I was coaching at Equifest managed to take on this tip and jumped...

Hey, I'm Amanda Wilson. I have competed to World Cup level and am currently rebuilding my team of jumpers, with the goal to one day represent New Zealand on the world stage in showjumping. I want to share my journey and the realities of what it takes to reach the top of the sport; including all the highs and the lows and everything in-between. For me, horse riding is more of a mental sport than...

Hey dude! I just stumbled across this video and wanted to say how excited I am! I didn’t realise you had a channel over here, and was delighted to see you in my recommended. I adored reading the biography-esque books that your sister wrote, and can’t wait to see how this series goes. I’ve been occasionally (and a bit rustily/nervily) mucking around with a 5yo warmblood (pretty chilled out for his age), Monty, that has the basic basics down. My uncle has been trying to get him going in a more dressage-focused direction, but from my understanding, Mr Monty doesn’t have the dressage spark. Hence why I am very excited to see what this series has, hoping this will help me understand and learn a bit more about horsemanship, so I can be more helpful in either figuring out what Monty enjoys and then helping to produce him in that, or in building a solid foundation and producing him as an adult riding club/allrounder horse. Looking forward to seeing what you cover, and if you have any tips around building balance- for both horse and rider :)
