Swag Family
Australia
They say we learn by doing. In 2019 we learn by riding… right around Australia. Join us, the Hughes family, for the journey of a lifetime. Students, teachers, adventure lovers, it’s time to go exploring.
This adventure has a seriously educational twist.
Finding out about the past, seeing the country today and wondering how it might change in the future. Our big challenge is to explore the deep cultural history of Australia. On our two wheeled (three if you include the trailers) journey we’ll be meeting amazing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and inspiring Australians from across the wider community to hear and learn directly from them. It’s Adventure Learning so all schools are invited to join us. There will be LIVE reports each week with interviews and tales from the road, awesome student workbooks to support adventurous learners, forums for teachers and students, prizes and lots of surprises.
Where will this journey take us? What will we discover? Who will we meet?

Adelaide to Devonport
Departing Adelaide we rode towards the Coorong and the mouth of the Murray River. Instead of pedaling we took to the water in a boat before hitting the road into Victoria. As we bounced between the wild surf coast and the rich farming land we closed in on the end of the mainland (Tasmanians call everything in the big island this) leg of our long journey. The tall buildings and busy roads of Mel...
Jude and Astrid
In 2013 Jude and Astrid set out on cycling adventure from their home in Melbourne. Over the next two and half years they travelled through numerous countries on their way to London. After a few years working as ambulance paramedics they decided it was time to come home. So they decided to ride. Through Europe and Africa before eventually landing in Adelaide to complete their extraordinary adven...
Rawlinna to Adelaide
We’ve faced a few challenges recently. Like everything on this adventure, they have been of our own making. In this latest video update the first challenge is to tackle the limestone track from Rawlinna to Cocklebiddy. We saw one car on the last of the three days we spent out there. It was a couple of geoscientists from Slovenia trying to figure out how the Nullarbor Plain came to be as it is n...
Leinster to Rawlinna
This video takes us south and east through outback Western Australia. Heading away from the brewing wet season in the north we ride through one of the richest gold mining provinces in the world. After leaving Leinster we headed south on sealed roads to Kalgoorlie before finally making the sharp turn east. Instead of the usual route down to Norseman to begin the Nullarbor crossing we took the ro...
Marble Bar to Leinster
In this update, Marble Bar to Leinster, we skirt the western deserts. It is a part of Australia that holds pockets of gold and vast mountains of iron ore. The farmers count their stock in the thousands and their acres in the hundreds of thousands. For the Martu people, who have lived in the deserts with strong traditions for countless thousands of years, this has brought difficult changes. But ...
Annabelle from Yarrie Station
Annabelle Coppin owns Yarrie Station and runs it with her family. Her family have been the leaseholders since the late 1800s and she is a fifth generation farmer. Originally it was a sheep farm but these days it is stocked with cattle. Every year they muster the cattle from all corners of the huge property. We visited Annabelle and her mustering crew (station hands) at their campsite near a bea...
Derby to Marble Bar
The race is on to get out of northern Australia. In this video report we ride from Derby to Marble Bar, from the Kimberley to the East Pilbara. Each week that ticks past means hotter temperatures as we approach the beginning of the wet season in the tropics. They call it the build up and we’ll just avoid it as we head fast over the next few weeks. Mind you, Marble Bar is famous for being the ho...
Gibb River Road
The road was originally built through the rugged Kimberley landscape to truck cattle out from the stations. In more recent times it has been overtaken by tourists and adventurers looking to get off the beaten track. In this video report we ride along the famous Gibb River Road.
I Love Nev (Gibb River Road)
‘Okay, gotta go guys, the Gibb River Road needs me.’ Nev joked as we departed after a quick hello on the road. Except it wasn’t really a joke. Nev and Leonie run Over the Range Tyre & Mechanical Repairs on the Gibb River Road. People who break down, and there’s quite a few, really do need him. We’d spent a night at their place a few days earlier and grabbed the opportunity to interview Nev. He ...
Katherine to Kununurra
This video update, Katherine to Kununurra, is really a story of the people we met along the highway. Sam, Karen and three kids from Nowra who have been on the road for two and a half years. Katie and Henley from the USA who are run/riding from Darwin to Adelaide on the dusty backroads. Jedda, the principal at Timber Creek School who opened the doors to us on a Saturday. Leish and Tim, with anot...
Borroloola to Katherine
In the new video update we bump our way through the Limmen National Park from Borroloola to Katherine. It is the third largest national park in the NT behind Kakadu and Judbarra / Gregory. Apart from the spectacular corrugations and bulldust we spotted our first saltwater crocodiles and some wonderful people.
Yurkurwal and Yurburya
Yurkurwal is a Garawa Traditional Owner, artist, activist, singer, linguist and teacher. She is also known as Nancy McDinny. We met Yurkurwal out the front of the Waralungku Arts Centre in Borroloola. She and her sister, Yurburyu, sang while people slowly gathered for the NAIDOC Week celebrations and the ensuing march. As we spoke, and later as we watched and listened, it became clear that both...
Burketown to Borroloola
The latest video update covers a lot of dirt and some beautiful country. The one thing we didn’t document properly was the generosity of the locals and fellow travellers. In between all those corrugations were many roadside offers of water, ginger beer, apples, tea bags and a brain transplant… What we did capture however, possibly a top five highlight for the entire adventure, was an immersion ...
