Origami Butterfly Tutorial
This butterfly tutorial is a simplified version of the origami master Akira Yoshizama’s classic butterfly design.
I’ve seen many instructions and variations of this origami butterfly online but I think the first one I saw was on goorigami.com.

Aloha from Hawaii and mahalo, thank you for your clear tutorial. With 2 red, 2 dark green, & 2 light green 15cm square origami papers I made 2 wreaths. Love to learn more with you.🌺
Thank you, Brenda - your wreath and chosen colors sound lovely! If you are looking for more ornaments to make I do have a playlist - 'DIY Holiday Ornaments' with 3 other tutorials : )
bellissimo! ❤👍👍
Beautiful
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience
You're welcome, Pam! I hope that means you'll be doing some rusting soon : )
Hi there. I've just started experimenting with rust printing. After the print result has dried off should you 'fix' it..e.g. is there a risk that the dried rust will rub off the paper?
Hi Julie, If you are doing anything with your finished rusted papers that will involve a lot of handling, like stitching or collaging, it is a good idea to seal it with a clear fixative. I have had powdery rust particles smudge my paper and make my hands dirty. If you are rusting thread, wash it thoroughly after rusting. It will keep the rust color but won't rub off as you're using it.
@@KathyJohnsonArt Thank you so much. I'm thinking of over printing with a photopolymer plate, so that the rust image is the background to my print. But of course I'll need to resoak the paper ...to make sure the polymer plate is pressed right in as it is an intaglio method.
@@JulieGrove-Hills What an interesting and different way to use a rust print - sounds amazing!
Very nice. Will check out your other vids. TFS
Kathy, These are so beautiful! You certainly are good at this.
Thank you so much! Been printing for quite a while and it's soooo much fun😍
Hi Kathy! Can I still purchase the collage sketchbook class? Thank you. Linda Waugh
Hi Linda, This was a live Zoom class. I'm pretty sure I'll teach it again in 2025 as a live Zoom or prerecorded self-paced class. Announcements will be in my newsletter. Thanks for your interest! : )
@@KathyJohnsonArt thanks so much. I’d like to take it.
thanks a lot
You're welcome Evelyn, I hope you found it helpful.
Thank you for such great instructions!
You are so welcome Janet! Glad you enjoyed it : )
Thank you for sharing these ornaments. I enjoy origami so this is definitely something I will try out.
I'm so glad you'll be giving them a try and getting a headstart on holiday ornaments too : ) Have fun!
The key to collage is to be organized with what you are working with.
Thank you so much for this video! Very inspirational! ❤
Thank you, Sheila, I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Molto bello il risultato. E anche rilassante. Grazie .😊👍❤
Thank you Emanuela❣
How do you get full circles on a scarf please?
The full circle prints are from washers or the tops of the tin cans.
😍😍😍it's so wonderful!!❤❤❤
Thank you! 😊
😍😍😍
Love this chunky book, Kathleen! Great prints.
Thanks so much Rosann!
Beautiful and mesmerizing
Thank you so much!
Buena explicación. Gracias
de nada Judith🙂
I'm so glad you showed the measurements of the paper strips! I watched countless videos, with many failures, because I couldn't get the proportions. THANK YOU!
Hi Judy, Makes all the difference to have the correct proportions 🤩Glad you had success this time!
Thanks, Kathy, this looks simple and fun!
You're welcome! I'm glad you think so. Enjoy!
Hello 🤗 Kathy 🌹 Thank you for sharing this video I made one big so it can hold a glass candle vase and candle enjoy your day and week ahead ☺️🌹💌🦄🖌️🎨🤗❣️❣️
Hi Linda - That sounds wonderful! So glad you enjoyed the video 🙂Happy Holidays!
@@KathyJohnsonArt Thank you Kathy and Happy Holidays to you also 🎉🎉🦄🤗❣️
Has anyone used glue during the assembly?
Hi Trudy, They usually stay together pretty well on their own but you could add a little dap of glue as you assemble the pieces so they will be extra secure.
Fun! Would love to see what the students had done.
Hi Sue, You can see examples of what was done in the class on my blog: www.kathyjohnsonart.com/blog/did-you-know-there-is-a-world-collage-day I think you'll agree, some very nice pieces : )
Cut point(s) from the center of the paper: *paper length * 0. 293* or from the edge of the paper: *paper length * 0.207* . Your case example: 6"*0.293 = 1.76" from the center
Hi Kathy! What a lovely model, I could follow you easily. Thank you! From Brazil
Thank you, Maria, Glad you found the instructions easy to follow : )
Is there any solution to lift the rust out in places you wanted?
I've never tried it but I'm not sure it can be completely removed. If you search for how to remove rust stains from clothing you'll get all kinds of recipes containing ingredients such as baking soda, cream of tartar, hydrogen peroxide, vinegar etc.
Very kool
Hello Kathy what is the tool you are using to punch holes in the paper? Where can it be purchased ? Thank you for sharing your artistic talent
Hi Debbie, It's a tool I've had for probably 25 years from my days as a film assembler. I don't think you can purchase that exact item but it's just a short fine pointed awl. If you can't find an awl with a fine enough point you can make your own by pushing a needle into a cork - I've made one and it works great for this purpose. 🙂
@@KathyJohnsonArt thank you Kathy 😀👍
Just needed a quick fix of creativity today and this fit the bill. I'm going to save this one for Xmas. I like the idea of using a paper bag that has been painted. I used some heavy wrapping paper as my prototype. It's drying! By the way, for the first part, I used a glue stick and white glue for the last part.
😀Christmas in July! Have fun trying out different papers and sizes!
Great videos can I ask what sketchbook paper you use ? thanks Laura 🙂
Thank you Laura : ) When I made this sketchbook I knew I would be doing a lot of stitching so I wanted something sturdy. I used Arches BFK 250gsm printmaking paper. Maybe a little overkill for a sketchbook but it's my favorite paper. It has such a nice velvety feel. Most of my other sketchbooks are drawing or mixed media paper.
That was fun. I worked along with you. I do get carried away with the details so this was a great exercise. Thank you.
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it and found it helpful
Great video, thank you Kathy. Re the sound, I have low hearing and even with the computer volume full on, the sound is very soft.
Thank you, Anna. Sorry the sound was too soft for you. Pretty sure I used the same setting as usual but I will keep this in mind for next time : )
Enjoyed this replay! I am looking forward to the Mailscape class!
Thanks, Laura - I'm looking forward to it too❣
Loved this, Kathy! Thanks so much. Off to collage!
Thanks Lucy! Happy Collaging : )
Lots of fun! You are a very good instructor, very clear and inspiring! Thank you.
Thanks so much, Cheryl 😍 Glad you enjoyed it!
I loved watching this. Thank you. It came out really neat!
Thank you Shelle, glad you liked it : )
Thanks so much for the great tutorial. Quick question - could you use metallic wrapping paper for this?
Hi Marian, I don't see why it wouldn't work unless it's too thin to hold the shape. Would look beautiful in metallic - I hope you give it a try : )
@@KathyJohnsonArt Thanks, I'm going to pull out my left over Christmas paper and give it a try!
Great tutorial and love your ideas. I’m looking forward to using your technique.
Thanks so much Josie!
Thank you so much for sharing this video! It was very easy to follow and it looks great!
My pleasure Andrea! So glad you are happy with your wreath ornament : )
Kathy, how does this video not have a million views? I've been in a collage rut and this is a new way of approaching my work. Thank you so much for posting this. You da best!
Hi Patrick, I'm so glad you found this helpful. Hoping this stepping-off point inspires you and starts you off with a fresh start for the new year!
Can you use any weight paper?
A medium-weight paper such as scrapbook paper works best. Some card stock papers can work but others may crack on the edge when folded, you could do a test fold and see. Sheet music and book pages work well too. I hope you have fun making the wreaths.
Thank you, the one with the small white border is a very good tip. I used old book pages. Best regards from Germany
I bet the book pages look great. So glad you found the tip helpful Sieglinde : ) Happy Holidays!
I love your tutorial! The little bell ornaments seem so magical to me and I’m excited to make some soon especially since I have all the supplies. I agree with your other commenters; your voice is very enjoyable. Thank you for taking the time and effort to share your talents and I hope you have a beautiful day.
Thank you so much Sherry. I was just looking at your channel with all those amazing beading tutorials - Wow : ) I can just imagine how beautiful the embellishments on the bells you make will be. Enjoy!
This is brilliant, Kathy! Such a pretty way to use those odd pieces of scrapbook paper. And your voice is soo soothing.
Thanks, Kay! I was addicted to buying scrapbook paper some time ago. So many pretty designs - that's why I have so many scraps 😄
You’re such a delight to learn from, Kathy! Thank you!
Thank you, Laurel, that's so very kind of you to say : )
Wonderful tutorial. I love this idea. Thank you.
Thanks Jill - have fun!
Kathy, your instructions are always very clear and easy to follow. Thank you.
Thank you so much Cheryl, that's very nice to hear : )
Thanks! Easy to follow!
Thanks Lori, glad to hear that : )
