Planting in pots, a few things to know before you start planting your bulbs
I can ramble on about pots for quite a while so apologies for the long video! There's still lots to mention.
Pots are brilliant for filling spaces. Place them on your door step, balcony, patio or use them to raise plants in your beds.
Things to remember;
Don't let your pots dry out
Use good soil that drains well and retains moisture
Use a large pot
Make room for your roots and help maintain moisture levels. (Watch your back when moving them)
Terracotta pots breath
They can dry out with a strong wind. Line the pots inside or buy a glazed pot.
Plastic pots may not be as attractive but they can help preserve moisture.
Don't over crowd your pot
Lasagne planting is a great idea but the foliage can get very over crowed and messy.
Keep the soil
You can reuse the soil for 1-2 years but it is always a good practise to mixing in fresh compost/soil/grit
Use your imagination
There are many brilliant ways to plant in containers. Pots can be expensive but you can use whatever you have that will hold soil. Hollowed out tree trunks, old pipes, butler sinks, wheel barrows and so much more

    6 years? How come?

    • @Peternyssen-Flower-Bulbs

      It's a good question, some plants can put on extraordinary growth in one season but bulb seeds take a very long time. It can be up to 6 years (but it might be 3 with the right conditions). The bulb will develop quite quickly but it will only flower when it is a certain size, for example a tulip will need to be at least 8cm in circumference. Bluebells should be at least 5cm in circumference before they are strong enough to produce a good flower. I'm sure there are studies out there to give you a more scientific answer, I worked with a bluebell grower in Lincolnshire and this is how long it took. One thing is for certain, you'll need a lot of patience!

    At the end of this clip you comment about the leaves yellowing and say you can fix that later. What ‘fix’ did you have in mind please? I can’t find a follow up video. Thanks in advance.

      Dahlias can go yellow for a number of reasons. Overwatering mostly. It can be hard to provide a balanced growing condition in a pot. I have placed it in my bed where it’s much happier.

      @@Peternyssen-Flower-Bulbs OK, thanks 🙏🏻 I’ll let my friend know. ( On whose behalf I was asking) I’ve never bothered growing dahlias until this year. I thought they’d be too much trouble. I have indeed taken a fair bit of trouble with them . I only have a small garden in two halves. The back half is already planted with shrubs from a previous owner, which leaves the patio as the main growing space. I bough 14 different dahlia tubers and planted them all carefully in pots. I even planted the two tubers that I thought looked really weedy and unviable. The grower sent me replacements for those two and I planted those as well. So I had a crop of 16 now. One of the replacements has not flourished even though it was a stonking big tuber with lots of promise. I blame that on myself because I planted some other things above it and I don’t think it was happy. However apart from that one ALL the ones in pots are flourishing. 😁 The ones that are flourishing the most are ones I have raise up on tables or staging and they are totally fab. Ones I’ve left at ground level have struggled against slugs and snails but they too are looking good. Maybe I’ll put a little clip up on TH-cam to show how things are going. 😆 I’ve used a variety of defences against slugs and snails but I still check them all over in the morning and evening. I’ve also bought a couple of dahlias from a sale, so my family is getting bigger by the day. I can’t take much credit for the last two but I’m giving them my best shot 😀 Thank you again for the advice about the yellowing leaves. The friend who asked lives in Cornwall where the early summer has been very rainy and ground waterlogged.

      @@janisbryan5264 Fantastic, I'm pleased they're doing well. Dahlias are worth it in the end but they can be hard work. Especially when trying to get them past the slug eating stage! Quite often with dahlias, size doesn't matter. You can take cuttings and extend your collection even further. I've Benn growing them for years. Some do brilliantly without any help others seem to take an age to get going. We would love to see any videos you have!

    I bought a bag at Lowe's and there's shoots already 2-4 inches long... Do I still plant them with the crown right at the surface. Because the shoot is laying off to the side above ground level

    • @Peternyssen-Flower-Bulbs
      @Peternyssen-Flower-Bulbs 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry for the delay, you've probably planted them by now. The shoots want to sit just below the surface. the stems are anchored by the tuber. Most stems are pretty tough. Dahlias are very fibrous, but they usually need staking. Planting the oft tissue under the soil can cause it to rot. I hope that make sense

    How long do you soak them for?

    • @Peternyssen-Flower-Bulbs
      @Peternyssen-Flower-Bulbs 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's not common practice to soak dahlias, I did this for 4-5 hours. Dahlias don't like to be too wet for too long otherwise they can rot. I potted this up straight away I wouldn't do it too often but it's a good way to gauge any damage for future dahlias.

      Hi, they need plenty of space and we’ll draining soil. Some times the weather can be too wet or too cold. This means they are not always successful but they are hardy and perennial, so you might get amazing flowers one year and just foliage the next. As they mature the plant will grow and you’ll get more stems and more chance of success. Your dry spot sounds perfect, they can tolerate dry weather well
